Can be open diff. Would prefer disk to disk, but if not, that's okay. Going in a 1991 YJ. If anyone has one for sale, please PM me. Thanks,

Max

I've got a stock D30 with 3.55 gears. It's out of my 2001 XJ. It's complete.

I'm trying to replace my 3.55's. I already have a rear axle with 4.56, now need a front.

Have you installed the Dana 35 yet? Is it a super setup if not lets us know how long it last with 4.56 gears:rolleyes: Mine made it several years with the 3.55 and 33x10.5 tires before the carrier let go.

I'm doing a SO. I've have been running 3.55's with 32's for several years now and want to go uo to 35's. I do alot of wheelin', just not THAT extreme. The D35 is not in yet.

I did my SOA last year. If you what the stories about it you can stop by some time and talk. My D35 busted on a dirt road.

Is the housing bad? If not put 4.56 gears in the thing.:D

Here is my take on it. I don't think spending the money on the Dana 30 and 35's in a SOA with 35 inch tires is worth it in the long run. If you are thinking of going past 35's to 37's inch tires and want to run the 30 and 35 until then, then that is ok. I like the combination of front and rear Dana 44's and 35 inch tires and believe to be stayin here for along time. So the money and time spent going to SOA is well spent. With the SOA I bought high steer knuckles and love the steering up that high. I would not want to spend this money just to change it again. The SOA rides better than my 4 inch lift and alot more articulation. I have the traction bar to install in the rear. I have a Dana 300 transfer case. I clocked the Dana 300 so I can have a flat skid plate for the transfer case skid. So I should not need to do any major modifications. Maybe just little stuff here and there. So with the Dana 44's and Dana 300 I have lockout hubs and twin stick and no need for SYE. The jump to 37 inch tires is to big more me and I like the 35's. No horror stories I just spend alot of time thinking about this and I did not want to do something that I thought was a temp fix. Leaf springs in SOA are simple and great. Would I want a three or four link well maybe later.

I think I have taken all possibilities into consideration. I realize that going with D44's is the best choice for what I am considering, however, budget constraints limit my options. Since I do not do any extreme rock crawling or trails, and most of what I do is drive to work/around town, I think my D30 and 35 will be adequate. Once I decide to expand the scope of my wheelin' adventures, I will begin the upgrade of my axles.

If what I do now results in broken shafts, I will have no choice but to downsize to 33's and begin to hunt down some D44's.

I think that I may have more luck finding a D30 with 4.10's and then having the 4'56's installed in that carrier.

Thanks for the information. I agree with you.

By the way, Don, I WOULD like to see your SOA. I have many questions about the process.

What is wrong with the D30 you have? Why not put 4.56 R&P in the 30 you have.
Open carrier new are cheap. I might have a used one at the shop.

I remember thinkin that way. Now its abuot to get thick with all the crap i wanna do. Just make sure you do it right the first time. It might cost you more now but it always costs most later :D

You're right, I know. Do you know anyone wanting to unload the D44's?

The main thing to look into is steering for the Dana 30 in SOA. You may need some type of cross over steering for the passenger knuckle. These need to be fabricated or maybe are made now. One thing I left off is BRAKING. Some people with 35's have marginal brakes. With my Dana 44 I did not have to spend extra money on braking upgrades. When I hit the brakes my jeep is only limited by the traction the Goodyear MTRs can get on the pavement.
