I've been tossing around all the different options out there and would like some input from the Gurus out there. First off let me mention that I've decided to stick to more scenic wheeling after the build is complete. I want to explore more of the state and others and not have to worry about breaking as much crap. I've taken alot of time to do this build right and in reconditioning the body panels. So that being said; I'm going to try to restrain myself this time around and not try to take a Wrangler where a buggy belongs.
I've been looking at doing a simple TeraLow, maybe a Rubicon 241 or a Dana 300 flipped. For $745.00 shipped; the TeraLow is darn cheap and has a great reputation. I don't feel like an Atlas is feasible at this time as I still need to purchase soft doors and a top, driveshafts,etc...

Write it down. :D
And if your not looking for stupid extreme crawling ratio's then the Tera sounds perfect for what you want.

Ever since I've had this fever I can't find the pen, but the anal thermometer is behind my ear. Tera who? Does she work at Hooters?

Another vote for TeraLow.
And, I might add, if you end up with anything else, we'll ALL know you are stalling the build because you are afraid to wheel.

Oh, you'd need a pretty big crawl ratio for Tera. :D

Oh that Tera. I heard she's been known to break output shafts. Oh; and she whines if not properly lubed.

That's because every time he pulls it out of his pocket it's on a different side and he can't remember if tales meant Teralow or if heads mean Atlas. :D

Just to add some input here... I have been running a Teralow for 5 years now and I have not had a single problem. And 4 of those years I have run 37 inch tires. I addition I ran the standard sized output shaft on a Currie SYE and never had a problem here either.
I recently did a complete rebuild of the t-case and put an upgraded 32 spline JB Conver. super short output shaft in it since I plan to go to 40s for my next set of tires. I did a thourough inspection of all the guts of the t-case and the only issue that I had was a stretched chain... The output shaft had no signs of twisting at all.... Now with the 32 spliner, I am really not concerned since this is the same diameter as the atlas.
The tera does tend to make more noise than the standard t-case, but this is simply because the gears are running faster and there are more planet gears in the low range gear set than stock (5 as opposed to 3). I personally do not run in 4th or 5th gears at all with the tera in low range since the stock oil pump can only keep up for so long at these speeds. If you stay in gears 1 2 or 3 with a manual or 1 or 2 with an auto you should really have no problems.
I vote Teralow...

I'm with Danno on this. Since putting the terra 4:1 with a 2 lo. Wheelin has been allot more enjoyable. I'm not burning up clutches every year, and it sure takes a huge load off the rig. Also the install directions highly recommend that you dont run it in any gear above 3rd. And it does whine a bit, but that just adds the cool factor. Go with a terra lo. One other thing. Check the chain and gear while you have it apart. Especially if your getting up there in miles.

One more thing to add, do not run ATF, put 5w-30 synthetic motor oil.
