I'm sure some of you probably already have this really neat book. "Guide To Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails" written by Charles A. Wells. I stumbled upon it while browsing the internet. I ordered mine through Amazon.com, paid a little more for shipping and got it in two days. I see in the back of the book it can be ordered directly through Charles Well's own website at www.funtreks.com or by phone at 1 (877) 222-7623
It's a nifty book, with lots of information, especially for a greener than green afraid of heights novice like me. :o The book rates all the roads, gives good info, great directions, GPS positioning, history of the area, as well as telling whether the mountainous roads are REALLY high up  (by the way, I do travel these roads with my husband, but at the end of the trip, he needs to pry me off the seat. I'm sure some of you understand, hey, it's a Jeep thing!) :D Hope this information is useful to some of you. Enjoy!

Is this a review or a promo? :D Just a note, it has been 4 years since it was published, so, from time to time, you will find discrepancies and out-of-date info. There are some corrections on the website, but, as with anything, use the book as a "suggestion" and do more research and/or go prepared for anything.

And, Matt, you are in a category all by yourself! ;) :D

Instead of paying for shipping and handling, i purchased this neat book at Barns and Noble. I've also seen it at other bookstores around the valley. Just go in and find the Arizona or Car section, and their bound to have it. Its a good book for the novice.

That is a great book. I used it religiously until I found this one:

It has much larger pages with better maps and color photos. It also tells quite a bit about the history. It also has sections for historic people as well as descriptions and photos of local wild life and plants. It can also be found at local bookstores. I got my copy at Barnes and Noble.

Once the pages started falling out of my copy (after the first trip) I took it to Kinkos and had it spiral-bound. It only costs like $5 and it stays open to any page! I was in Moab last weekend and bought the Moab edition. Within 5 minutes the Hell's Revenge page fell out. I think they use bad glue...

that book is good, much easier trails, and easier lines etc. and has a lot more "story" to what trails it does have... they are both good companions.

I don't think this one is in print anymore though (or going through revisions) look at the ship time on the link you sent... 4-6 weeks usually means print on demand meaning it could be a year before they have enough orders... if you can find it in a local store, get it :)

I like loading both waypoint sets into the gps and laughing :)

although I will say... the backcountry book has more waypoints per route and has more details on turns etc... i always find the wells book a little misleading, or at least not the way I would have descrbed the same situation

Both are good books. Since we're kinda out in the boondocks, we live in Roosevelt and don't have access to a bookstore so most of our shopping is done online, a bit of a pain, but it sure beats a trip to Phoenix.
Does anyone know of any good books written about the back roads in our area? We've gotten the Tonto National Park map. it's a good one showing loads of roads, some good trips which we've already taken.
(We're out for scenery, not torture for our old bones  )
We've stopped at the ranger station/visitor center at Roosevelt Lake and spoken with the rangers, but they don't know of any books written pertaining to the roads in the Tonto National Forest. Has anyone done any of the backroads in the Tonto Nat'l Forest in the areas between the Salome Wilderness and The Sierra Ancha Wilderness? (North & Northeast of Roosevelt Lake) For scenery, it's hard to beat this area.
Hubby & I sure enjoying reading the posts from all of you and love reading about your adventures :D We're so glad we found the Virtual Jeep Club!

Happy Trails ;)

LauraA,

Have you been up to Workman's Creek lately? Do you know if the road up past the falls is open yet? I know they closed the road about a year ago due to the heavy rains. They were worried about the road falling into the canyon because of all the rain. I thought is was to be open by now but don't know for sure. It's great country up around Aztec Peak.

Hi Tom,
No, sorry, we haven't been to Workman's Creek and don't have any information on it...it's on our list of "to do" I do know that the Tonto Nat'l Forest folks are trying to repair damage done to some of our backroads by that rain. There were a lot of washouts and in some places, roads simply disappeared.
You can call the Tonto Nat'l Forest people and ask them about specific locations, we've found them to be quite helpful (602) 225-5200
