Subject: Cherokee 4.0 Engine Problem??
Hello Gang,
Well here I go:,
About a week back I started to have a problem that started like this: I was driving into town and all of a sudden my gas gauge that was at 1/4 of a tank went to peg out way past the full mark. And then the engine started to miss and finally it started to not shift out of first gear. ( It is an automatic). Finally the engine would just die due to no more charge in the battery. Well this is what I have done so far:
1. I have replaced the battery with new one.
2. I have replaced the alternator with new one.
3. I have replaced rotor, cap, plugs, wires/ new ones.
4. I have replaced all vacuum lines/ even trans. lines.
5. I have checked all fuses.
After installing my new battery the Jeep started right up and ran great. I went into town and back home, no problems. I then went back to town later that day running the A/C, it was hotter that time of the day. Half way to town the Jeep started to jerk and slow down and finally die. Well the battery was completely dead. It ran great until the battery ran out of it charge. I did have the new alternator checked and it is working great. The battery is working great. I just am not getting any complete circuit I guess????? I am at my wits end. I hate electrical problems. And I am not good at it either. I would appreciate any help that can be given in this matter. I would like to finish it to be able to go out this weekend............... Thanks in advance.......

Nice idea, Chris!
My wife has no desire to drive (she has stated this repeatedly, so she won't
be participating), but I think it has merit and is a good idea. Now....I'm
not sure about my oldest daughter...hmmm.....that would be interesting. She
likes to off-road....I just can't remember if I ever introduced her to a
manual tranny! LOL

Ok this is not going to be a singles pick up run(Somebody single would have
to set that up).
My wife really wants to drive more often off road(when we met we used to off
road all the time, her in her Toyota Pick Up and me in my Samurai), however
she is not experienced in rock crawling. During the last trip(National
Trails Day) she did great running Appetizer, but with her depth perception
problem did not want to run Lower Tax Collector in the dark.
What I was thinking(yes I am gonna say it) was if there are other wifes or
significant others that have been bugging you to drive I would set up a run
where they can drive and we can spot for them(driving it a little and
knowing how it feels on the other side might help them spot for you in the
future). Go ahead some of you are just waiting to flame me(I put on my fire
retardent suit before hitting the send button so HA!!!). And my apologies
to any of you that might have your wife checking your email with you(sure
some of you are going thank God my wife isn't reading this).
Anyone else is of course welcome to come along, but the primary set up would
be for them to drive, walk it with you and map out the plan, then drive past
the obstacle.
I was thinking of having them run either Appetizer and Lower Tax
Collector(Upper if you want them to or if you want to switch) or maybe the
Gas Pipeline or give me some sugestions...keep in mind some of the drivers
may be first timers so the rig they are driving may be much more capable
than they are ready for in making yor suggestions.
Anyway, it was just a thought and it sounded like fun. And yes for your
Jeep chicks out there if your significant other or hubby wants to drive and
you will let him this can and will work in reverse, no prejudice here.
And for those who can't resist...FLAME ON!!!!

Have you checked where it grounds to the frame?
Also check to make sure all main elec connections are good and tight/ no corrosion
Also check the frame(s) to body grounding straps
Could the ECM gone bad from low voltage?
Also what does the ammeter/voltmeter show in the dash?
Try an external multimeter to see the same readings @ idle
Hope this helps more info needed.

Lets do it! Why not run something up north where its a bit cooler?

Casper....I have an '89 XJ (but not at my house) and if I remember correctly, there is a fuseable link that is in the line between the alternator and the battery. I could be wrong....it has been a LONG time since I looked under that hood, but it seems to hang in the back of my mind that there is one there. If this were bad, it could be the source of your problem....alternator is fine....just can get the charging juice to your battery.

If you have a 33" x 12.5" on a 15" rim, want is the amount in gallons it
takes to pressurize the tire from 12#'s to 28#'s if you have a

but you would notice a DEFINITE loss in power during accerlation due to the

my cat broke up....a little pounding with a steel rod and the emptying of
the ceramic pieces made a great difference in air flow (amazing what an

How many Gallons of air would it take?
Hint: I figured a tire of this size is approx. 7200 cubic inches.

Linda,
That was my calculation.
Now, since the tire is full of air, assuming all things equal, some how we
need to integrate the pressure from 12#'s to 28#'s (wheelin' pressure to
road pressure).
And I get lost here.

Chris,
The other club I am in always sets aside the Feburary month
run as a Sweet Heart
Run ncourages the girls to drive, We usually have a good
turn out and also make
it a pot luck run to make it a larger social gathering at
lunch.
I bet you wouldn't have to wait to do a ladies run, but it
is damm hot lately. A
really mellow night run work out well then you could have a
steak cook out. We
did that a few years ago, if you leave early enough you can
catch a great sunset
going up the Mt. Ord forest road, it was an easy trail a few
years ago. We had a
steak fry about 9:30 once we got back down on the flats. It
was kind of late but
what could be better on a Saturday night.
Have fun. (I am still out of commission due to back problems
brought on by being
stupid in the garage with the Jeep).

Lemme see.....that would be roughly 31.16883 gallons (One cubic foot equalls
1728 cubic inches. you said 7200 ci which equals 4.17 cubic feet, and there are
7.480519 gal per cubic foot)

I agree I think it would be a great idea. My wife
drove the tj off road for the first time last week
and loved it. She has always supported my jeep
craving, but now I think she has been bit by it to.
She has already started talking about getting her own
jeep. I let her drive once and she is ready to
conquer axle alley. I think we should definitely put
some thought into the trail, something really basic
with a good variety of small learning obstacles, I
don't think I could bear it if she decorated the
rocker panels for me.

Subject: RE: Mathematicians wanted
James,
Let's put down some variables:
V1 is the initial volume of the tire to produce the initial tire pressure.
V2 is the final volume of the tire to produce the required increase in
pressure.
P1 is the initial pressure of the tire.
P2 is the final pressure of the tire.
T1 is the initial temperature of the air in the tire at P1
T2 is the final temperature of the air in the tire at P2
Assumption; Temperature of the compressed air in the tire is constant. (not
really true since the compressed air heats up as it is compressed).
Now for the equations, starting with the Natural Gas Law and our initial
conditions (initial tire pressure):
P1*V1 = N*R*T1 (Let N*R= constant K) which reduces the equation to:
P1*V1 = K*T1
Doing the same for the final conditions (final tire pressure):
P2*V2 = K*T2
Setting the initial condition equal to the final condition produces the
equation:
(P1*V1)/K*T1 = (P2*V2)/K*T2
But... since T1 = T2 and K is the same constant for both sides of the
equation, the equation simplifies to:
P1*V1 = P2*V2
Since we know the starting volume (V1) and both the starting and ending
pressures (P1 and P2), we can solve for the single unknown, V2:
EQUATION 1 : (P1*V1)/P2 = V2
Now I guess we need to plug in some numbers:
The area of a cylinder is pi*R^2*H
I'll model the tire as a cylinder, the wheel as a cylinder, and subtract the
two to find the volume:
Radius of the tire is Diameter/2 so the radius of your tire is 16.5"
Width of the tire is H = 12.5"
Volume of the tire= pi*16.5^2*12.5 = 10,691 cubic inches
You didn't state the width of your wheel so I'll assume it is 8" and it's
radius is 7.5"
Volume of the wheel is pi*7.5^2*8 = 1,413 cubic inches
The difference in the two volumes is the volume V1 = 9,277 cubic inches.
From your specifications:
P1 = 12psi
P2 = 28psi
So... now all we have to do is solve EQUATION 1 derived somewhere above for
the volume V2
V2=P1*V1/P2
Plugging in the numbers:
V2 = 12psi*9,277in^3/28psi
V2 = 3,976 in^3
So... in order to increase the pressure of your tire, the volume of air
which had to be produced by your pump is:
Delta V = V1-V2
Delta V = 9,277-3,976
Delta V= 5,301in^3
Using the handy dandy conversion from cubic inches to gallons of 1gal =
231in^3 give us the delta in gallons of air of:
5,301in^3/231in^3/gal = 22.95 gallons
Now... for a sanity check to see if my numbers are reasonable... at first
blush... 22.95 gallons seems large:
5,301in^3 is equivalent to 3.067ft^3 of air. 3.067 cubic foot of air can be
pushed out of a quickair II at the rate of 1.45CFM (at 40psi according to
quickair's advertisements)...which means that you should be able to air up
your tire from 12psi to 28psi in just about 3.067/1.45 minutes =
2.12 minutes!!!
Hmmmm... seems reasonable that a quickair II can inflate a tire from 12 to
28psi in 2.12 minutes....
Let's look at what quickair's advertisement on their web page says:
"The QuickAIR2 was developed to inflate 33" and larger tires with ease. The
QuickAIR2 will inflate a 33x12.5 tire from totally flat to 30 psi in less
than 5 minutes, or from 15 to 30 psi in less than 2.5 minutes*. Get the most
out of your tires! QuickAIR2 will let you air down for maximum traction and
performance and reinflate quickly. Capable of reseating tire on rim."
So... I calculate that it will take 2.12 minutes to inflate the tire at the
pressures you are asking and quickair2's numbers show that you can go from
15psi to 30psi in "less than 2.5 minutes".
I guess the sanity check worked and the numbers are very close given my
rough estimates and assumptions.
Your answer is 22.95 +- .25 gallons.
Kind Regards,
Joe West
Now... are you sorry you asked?

Casper

Subject: [az_vjc] Cherokee 4.0 Engine Problem??
Hello Gang,
Well here I go:,
About a week back I started to have a problem that started like this: I was driving into town and all of a sudden my gas gauge that was at 1/4 of a tank went to peg out way past the full mark.

I've been wanting to organize a Ladies Run for quite sometime. I recently began letting Theresa start driving Daddy Longlegs on a couple easy trails so she can get a feel for how it performs.

Okay who is the math people? Here's the question:
If you have a 33" x 12.5" on a 15" rim, want is the amount in gallons it
takes to pressurize the tire from 12#'s to 28#'s if you have a
compressor/tank filling at 90PSI? Lets say the CFM is limited to what a 1/4"
hose can take at the given PSI.
I know this is some sort of integration problem but, I am not sure where to
start.

but you would notice a DEFINITE loss in power during accerlation due to the

my cat broke up....a little pounding with a steel rod and the emptying of
the ceramic pieces made a great difference in air flow (amazing what an

Linda,
That was my calculation.

P1 = 12psi
P2 = 28psi
So... now all we have to do is solve EQUATION 1 derived somewhere above for
the volume V2
V2=P1*V1/P2
Plugging in the numbers:
V2 = 12psi*9,277in^3/28psi
V2 = 3,976 in^3
So... in order to increase the pressure of your tire, the volume of air
which had to be produced by your pump is:
