Mike,
You should also include a disclaimer about using the software at
your own risk, as is, etc. Unless you want to sign up for providing

I have a 4-banger, and as far as I've heard the cracked header
problem isn't as notorious as the 6's.
So I'm leaning more towards an exhaust problem, I was told that I
might have an issue with the smog pump not working properly, however
I don't have any experience with that. What is that and what does it
do?
I also have a small exhaust leak between the exhaust pipe and the
muffler (on the side towards the front of the jeep).
Can anyone with previous exhaust problems tell me what you had done?
All I know is I DON'T want to go through the hassle of taking it to a
dealer. Being lifted and locked with Lockrights F/R will make for a
very interesting time with them trying to drive it around, not to
mention warranty hassles.

They may have more in the teadd, but I would be very suprised to
see the physical construction of more than two ply's in the sidewall !

My guess is that Chris is correct... and the marks are just remnants of the
cooling process of aluminum. My Atlas II and my old NP231 both have casting
marks which I swear, look exactly like cracks. one good way to tell the
difference is to sand them lightly and see if they disappear. If they do,
and you can't see a fine crack; it is a casting mark.

I, among a few others think it's the throwout bearing in the clutch. There

This usually means that your regulator has gone out. Some times other things
can cause the regulator to go such as a bad diode trio or a bad bridge
rectifier. I just had the same thing happen to my Jeep and it was the diode
trio that shorted and took out the regulator in the process. I rebuilt the
alternator with $15 in parts and am on the road again.

Aaron,
I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. My TJ was shorting out
and dying on me all over town. I'd have to pull over and jiggle the
battery around a little bit, then I'd be fine. After a while, I was
just getting the problem you described. If I shut the engine off, it
wouldn't start back up until I jiggled the battery around again.
Finally, the other week, I was under the hood and noticed smoke coming
from the inside of my power distribution center. I opened it up and
found that the main terminals coming from the battery to the PDC were
loose. I tried tightening them by hand (that was a mistake, because
they were hot as all heck). I got a ratchet and a socket and tightened
them down nice and tight. I haven't had any problems since. So you
might want to pop the cover off your PDC (it's right in front of the
battery) and take a look under there before you go off changing your
battery or anything.

Ok this is not going to be a singles pick up run(Somebody single would have
to set that up).
My wife really wants to drive more often off road(when we met we used to off
road all the time, her in her Toyota Pick Up and me in my Samurai), however
she is not experienced in rock crawling. During the last trip(National
Trails Day) she did great running Appetizer, but with her depth perception
problem did not want to run Lower Tax Collector in the dark.
What I was thinking(yes I am gonna say it) was if there are other wifes or
significant others that have been bugging you to drive I would set up a run
where they can drive and we can spot for them(driving it a little and
knowing how it feels on the other side might help them spot for you in the
future). Go ahead some of you are just waiting to flame me(I put on my fire
retardent suit before hitting the send button so HA!!!). And my apologies
to any of you that might have your wife checking your email with you(sure
some of you are going thank God my wife isn't reading this).
Anyone else is of course welcome to come along, but the primary set up would
be for them to drive, walk it with you and map out the plan, then drive past
the obstacle.
I was thinking of having them run either Appetizer and Lower Tax
Collector(Upper if you want them to or if you want to switch) or maybe the
Gas Pipeline or give me some sugestions...keep in mind some of the drivers
may be first timers so the rig they are driving may be much more capable
than they are ready for in making yor suggestions.
Anyway, it was just a thought and it sounded like fun. And yes for your
Jeep chicks out there if your significant other or hubby wants to drive and
you will let him this can and will work in reverse, no prejudice here.
And for those who can't resist...FLAME ON!!!!

could be the battery, if it is shorted out it could be getting hot
and causing the sensor to go. It also could be the regulator, if this
goes then it would boil the battery and get the sensor hot and cause
an alarm.
But, if the voltmeter is pegging and the alarm is going off, I would
guess it would be the regulator in the altenator. You can go have
Checker or AutoZone check it and see for free.

How about we create a webpage about the original members as

I think that's and excellent idea. I'd guess that more significant
others would be willing to give it a shot when they're in the company

And, while I doubt this would cause my wife to want to drive, I would
definitely be willing to encourage her to try. But it better be a

There
is a possibility it's a tranny bearing, though I think I'll go for the

So you
might want to pop the cover off your PDC (it's right in front of the
battery) and take a look under there before you go off changing your
battery or anything.

significant others that have been bugging you to drive I would set up a run
where they can drive and we can spot for them(driving it a little and
knowing how it feels on the other side might help them spot for you in the

How about we create a webpage about the original members as
the "Founding Father(s)." We could "Billy the Kid" (acts of multiple

Dan,
I have a stock exhaust, in one piece, from the cat back if you need
it. I was a pain saving in one piece but I thought it would come in
handy one day.
I think that Scott Davis at Earnhardt's will do you good. He is a
service advisor and if nothing else he will be able to give you
pointers on how to avoid the dreaded warranty issues.

AA,
It could be a combination of what everybody has said. The sensor
under the battery measure the heat on the battery. This could be
going off if the battery is getting hot or it is a bad sensor. It
could be the battery, if it is shorted out it could be getting hot
and causing the sensor to go.

I think Doug has enough character you could just use him and his exploits
to base the entire character on :). Jim F.
I refuse to belong to any group that would have me as a member!

Chris,
I think that's and excellent idea. I'd guess that more significant
others would be willing to give it a shot when they're in the company
of others at their level.
And, while I doubt this would cause my wife to want to drive, I would
definitely be willing to encourage her to try. But it better be a
bit cooler out otherwise no way.

Dan, see Scott (service advisor) at Earnhardts, he has a TJ very nicely
built, I think he has hung out on VJC a few times too. He will be
straight forward with you.
