Ok, getting ready to swap all the fluids on my XJ. It's got 165k on it. I just got it not to long ago, so ignore the retardedness of my question.
What weight/type of oil do yall recomend for this motor, and (embarassed) how much does it take?
thanks.

Internet search engines are great tools. ;)

If it's a 6 cylinder; you'll need 6 quarts and I recommend 20W50 for a high mileage motor.

Ya, but I don't trust most of what I find on the net, but I do trust yall. You're tangable, so if you slight me, I can track you down :P lol
Na, yall just seem like a trustworthy source of info. Even the dealer has told me bogus info about my XJ.
Thanks for the info. I have gobs of 20/50 left over from when I was racing/building VWs, so that works out well.
I suspected 5 quarts though. So thanks. :)

I hear you on the VW days! They love the 20W50. You can use 10W30, but if your engine rattles upon startup or the rear main is leaking; the thicker oil helps.

VWs rule!! :D SO much simpler:rolleyes:

I like the Lucas oil stabilizer with my Motor oil, it realy helps stop leaks, quiets the motor, and keeps everything really lubed :D

for high mileage it's better to have thicker oil...it's also a plus for the compression since the seals wear down...

110k, I have synthetic with high mileage aditive and runs fine but when i floor sometimes i smell oil...i need to go back to the thick stuff...

I assume that the "high mileage" oils that are being marketed these day's do what you are suggesting in some form, or another? Are these oils just another marketing gimmick, hence better to just add a thicker oil?

Well, my 'dub had a built Audo 2.0 3A block with a Corrado G60 head that was shaved, P&P'd, etc. 11.2 compression at rev'd to 9k. It ran a "bit warm" obviously, and took GOBS of abbuse. I ran Castrol GTX 20/50 only.
I just got some High Milage 20/50 for the XJ. Supposedly the high milage stuff has some conditioner that helps the seals work better. *shrug* I'm sceptical, but hey, it's oil.

Royal Purple!!! Awesome full sythetic. I ran some trails with a bunch of people middle of the summer, LONG steep uphills in 4lo and 1st gear. At the top, most of them had to stop and open the hood to let them cool off. I ran my A/C all the way up and never got hot. Supposed to give a little more power, better cooling and last longer than conventional.

No offense, but if they need to stop and open their hoods to cool down; they have other problems besides oil. ;)

I only put in 5 quarts when I do a filter & oil change, but it's been 5 years so I don't remember so good
