I rarely shout out about something but tonight I just have to do it.
If I ever meet the person that decided to use star-pattern and torx pattern bolts on Jeep vehicles... I WILL HARM THEM .
I mean, really... how did that design meeting go? Was is something like this.
Engineer 1: "The transmission needs 6 bolts to hold it on securely"
Engineer 2: "Great. Let's use all 3/4 grade8 bolts"
Engineer 1: "Wait. I have a better idea. Let's use a five 3/4 bolts and 1 bolt with a pattern nobody will ever have. Let's also hide that bolt way up an out fo the way so you can barely see it, let alone reach it. That would be the best way of doing it. Oh oh oh! We can also randomly scatter that star-pattern bolt throughout the Jeep. Mechanics will thank us for it!".

Let me guess, your're working on the transmission:rolleyes:
You don't need no stinkin bolts, just weld everything together:D

i had those EXACT sentiments this past weekend taking out my roll cage....another person i would hurt is the guy who decided to glue the B-pillar to the tub, AND get the glue all over the torx bolts so you have to dig it out...oh almost forgot about that tamper proof torx on the roll bar too
ACE, Home Depot, Lowes, and Jeep dealerships dont carry tamper proof torx sockets....Sears does though.....yes I wasted about 2 hrs saturday determining that.....guess i should have gone to sears in the first place

Well, atleast now I know I am not alone in my hatred for those stupid torx heads and that hellish petrified, snot-goo they use. ugh....
I remember back in late 98 working on my first TJ cage and finding that stupid security torx head. I wish I could have had a picture of my face when i first found it.....somthing along the lines of "what the hell is that?

I have various scars and can name their relative Jeep number, year, and responsible torx size...
My favorite this week is: holding the seats in are three 1/2-inch bolts and one torx ... Bruise is 5 inches long from mid-forearm to wrist, thanks to Jeep #E8 orange, 2005, and Torx-55.
What will the new 2007's offer?

We'll concidering it has 4 doors .........twice as many sec.-torx. and double the goo but I usually try to replace all that junk with standard bolts when I have them . I would love to see the Jeep Ingineers show up at an event and explain there stupidity .

Yea, I just went through that too. What gives? Why one torx and the others standard 13mm heads? No big deal as my air rachet made short work of it, but if I didn't have a torx set, I would have been pissed!
Same story here, wanted to take rear seat belts out(center) and luckly managed to borrow a torx 45 from a neighbor.

Being an engineer, later a senior executive. Spending my teen years on a ranch keeping old Ford tractors and Chevy trucks running, not only do I ask the question, but I feel embarassed for those who dreamed TORX up. And, I feel even worse that somebody at a senior level bought into such a crazy idea.

Okay, the glue I can understand. Other than that, I don't see what the big deal is. Just go to sears, spend $40, and buy a torx socket set. If that is to much, go to autozone and buy a cheapo set. Done deal. There are very few security torx bolts on a jeep, and you can always drill out the center pin on that bolt.
All vehicles require special tools. Why does my Volkswagen require 12 point (triple square) wrenches to remove the cylinder head and the drive shafts? How about a 27mm bolt to remove the front hub? 17mm socket wrench (sound familiar) to remove the transmission drain plug. Those are just standard tools that you can buy. They have a huge assortment of other *special tools sold by VAG, most costing hudreds of dollars. Bearing Pullers, case splitters, timing belt adjusters, blah, blah, blah. The only thing that I've had to buy for my jeep was a set of standard sockets for the lug nuts and a few other non-metric bolts I've come across.

It's not having to buy the bits, it that they never sit in the bolt right. You always feel like it's a size too small and when you really have to crank on one it 'll twist out and send your knuckle straight to something hard or pointy.
X3 on the seat torx bolts. And damn that poo on the threads so it is a PITA to run in or out for the entire length of the threads.
Stupid torx...

Well I know what you mean about fitting right. I used the wrong size on a seat belt bolt. I had the file the sides square and use an adjustable wrench (and a healthy coat of PB Blaster) to remove it. I'm glad that was a soft bolt...

It wouldnt be a big deal if all four bolts were torx! But three of the four are standard head bolts and the forth is a torx! Does that make sense? Thats like a six pack of beer bottles with 5 being twist off and the last needing a opener!
?WEIRD?

I'm slowly replacing mine, as I encounter them while doing maintenance or builds they get replaced. I figure I have about 1325 fasteners to go between my three Jeeps....
Plus, my '90 being near the end of AMC and begining of Chrysler, and being assembled in Canada with American parts I have a good mix of metric and standard. At my job (government of course) they call this diversity!
btw...the first security fastener I encountered was on a '86 Grand Wagoneer tailgate. May god bless Sears/Craftsman.

WOW! I am glad to know that a lot of other people have my sentiment about those stupid bolts. I have started my own personal 'find-and-replace' program on my YJ to rid it of 'worthless fasteners'.
By The way... even the people that made up the Torx name were insane. Torx is just the brand name of the bolt. The real name just so happens to be "hexalobular internal driving feature" bolt:confused: .
I hate them even more.

Add me to the list.
When I did my first of many clutch jobs before installing the 4. 1 kit. I threw them bleeeeeeeeeeping things straight in the trash and replaced them to match the rest.
Flippin Chrysler. I bet they did it just to get a reaction.

YA RICH IAM WITH YOU ON THE TORX BOLTS, WHEN I HAD TO REPLACE MY WINDSHIELD CASEING FROM A ROLL OVER I LITTERALLY HAD TO WELD BOLTS TO THE TORX AND TOO FIND OUT ON TOP OF THAT THE MANUFACTURER USED BLUE LOCKTIGHT ON THEM....REALLY STUPID.....THOM (T.C.'S TOY)

Just a side bar you can use standard Hex Key Wrenches to remove these bolts if there not frozen in. :)

For what it is worth, the torx bolt that holds the front seat in place is also larger in diameter than the other three bolts.

Yup, my guess is that they made it bigger because it's the bolt right under where the seat belt attaches. Not that I'm a "smart guy" or anything, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.:D

Torx at the windsheild were painted and lock-tite in. What a PITA trying to install the widshield light brackets. After fighting them for about 45 mins, I decided 2 bolts per side were plenty.

I did the same thing. Now that's just plain funny! :D I was even tempted to just JB weld them over the old hinges rather than "f" with it.
