Anyone in Tucson know where I can get a pair of Swampers
mounted for cheap. I can operate the old fashion machine, and am
willing to give the tire irons a try !
Thanks

Nick, Daryl,

Well shoot if you are giving two away and Daryl only
needs one, I would be happy to take the other one off
your hands, IT would help to have a Full size spare..
But, Only if Daryl doesn't want it and no one else has
claimed it..

Thanks,
James

I've got '67 spread out in my garage.
There'a a great forum at
http://bbs.off-road.com that's just for Jeepsters.
Great source of information, and very civil to boot!
Also, you can look at the American Jeepster Club's web site at
http://www.off-road.com/jeepster/

You will find out that there are very few after market parts
available, But a lot of parts are crossed over from CJ's . That said,
there are a couple of companies that do make lifted springs for the
Commando.
What's the year and condition of the one you're looking at?

Any input would be great.

Notes:

1) This is information about 4-wheeling that I have gathered over the years. I will add more when I have the time.

2) The ASA4WDC offers 4x4 Awareness training. This is a great class for novice Four-Wheelers. Contact the ASA4WDC at asa4wdc@asa4wdc.org for class times and places.

Linda

Additionally, one of the original purposes of the AZ-VJC was to educate others about four-wheeling and Jeeping in particular. Many club members will be willing to "show you the ropes" if asked. -Jim

Rough Road Driving Tips

Never go four-wheeling alone! However, if you must go it alone, make sure someone "back home" knows where you are headed, how to get there, and when you are expected back.

Use low-range four-wheel drive and First gear

When starting the vehicle on obstacles, start in gear without pressing the clutch, giving a little throttle if needed.

Always use engine compression going downhill. Idle over obstacles. It may be necessary to use throttle slightly going uphill. Keep your foot off the clutch at all times. Start and stop with your key.

Always have the vehicle in gear; don't hold the clutch in while coasting down hills. This forces you to use the brakes. Brakes fail when they are too hot...

Drive slowly. Crawl over obstacles without using your clutch. If you start to spin or slip, give a little throttle. Keep the vehicle moving.

If you have an auto trans, use low-range and the lowest drive gear. Use the left foot on the brake and the right foot on the throttle. Apply gas only as needed.

Don't straddle large rocks. Put a tire on top of the rocks and crawl over slowly. Use gas only as needed.

Maintain adequate speed. Going fast will only tear up the environment -- and your vehicle.

Keep moving once you are committed. Proper momentum and smooth handling are the keys to forward progress

Trail Etiquette: How to Have Fun in the Long Run

Driver finesse is the key when it comes to traversing trails without upsetting anything or anybody (or getting through it, for that matter), but the vehicle can help achieve that goal if equipped correctly. Some things that work well with any 4x4 are as follows:

Less aggressive tires may do the job as well (or maybe even better depending on the terrain) while leaving less visible tracks.

Larger wider tires offer a bigger footprint spreading the load more and hence are less likely to leave ruts.

Airing down any tire makes it better conforming, in turn giving the same benefits as running a larger tire and, additionally, reducing the chance of wheel-spin.

Softer suspensions tend to let the axles articulate better, thereby keeping all four tires on the ground, and that really cuts down on spinning them and the need for speed.

Limited-slip differentials and/or lockers are usually a plus, as they prevent slippage. However, in tight turns they can lead to leaving tracks where an open diff won't.

Correct axle and/or transmission gearing allows a slower steadier progress, and especially when combined with the above, allows a much more enjoyable trip.

Used correctly, a winch will pull your vehicle across sections of the trail that would be hard or impossible to drive -- let alone without leaving evidence thereof. A winch, then, is ideal as a tool for eliminating the need to make new side trails.

Basically, anything that helps the vehicle to be more capable on the trail tends to make it easier to travel through it without stirring up dust or emotions.

Good things to bring along on a trail ride

Things that are absolutely necessary:

Tow strap

first aid kit

jack capable of lifting the vehicle and a tool capable of removing lug nuts

A spare tire equal to or within 3 inches diameter of existing tires on the vehicle

fire extinguisher

seat belts for all passengers

tow hooks front and rear

battery tie-downs (no bungee cords)

water for you, your passengers, pets, and 4x4

Tool kit

Things that are recommended:

CB radio

extra fuel (for really long trips)

spare vehicle parts

axe/hatchet

blanket or towel

shovel

flashlight (w/spare batteries)

Winch owners:

Winch owners should check cable prior to trail rides for frays, fishhooks, and snags. Also check the hook for cracks and signs of fatigue.

Winch owners should also carry winch accessories such as gloves and a blanket to throw over the cable.

Never use a trailer ball as an attachment point to winch or drag from. The ball can snap off, possibly injuring someone.

Miscellaneous

tire repair kit

tree saver

radiator hose

engine belts

fuses

saw

spare fasteners

duct tape

engine, transmission, brake, gear oils

trash bags

more spare parts

specialized tools

Etc.

Other Sources

Note: This is an older list and some of the tapes may no longer be available. I am sure there are more on the market. I'll try to keep this list up to date. - Linda

I found a site before when I was looking to regear that had a chart
for engine RPM for tire size to gear ratio. It is a great way to get
an idea of the RPM you want on the highway. Randysringandpinion.com
has a calculator that will calculate it for you if you input the

I too hope they catch the slob. Last year when the big fire was
burning outside of Globe, I was visiting a friend's cabin up by Young
and as I was driving out towards Payson on a Forest Service Road, I
came across a camp fire that was still smoking and had a large log
smoldering in the ring. Along side the fire ring there was a very
large wet spot, apparently from the "camper" emptying an ice chest.
Not on the fire, but right next too it.
All the liquids that my wife and I had were two small water bottles
and an half gallon of milk. We spent about an half an hour putting
it out, using the "mud" he had left behind, milk, a little water and
a shovel. Did I mention that the wind was blowing pretty hard too.
Stopped at a camp ground on the way out and talked to the owner who
took 5 gals. of water back to the campsite and put it dead out.
No doubt in my mind that if we hadn't come along, Christopher Creek
would now be a desert. I truly do not understand people like that!

I now always carry 5 gals of water.

Maybe we all need to write a letter to the Republic about the stupidity of
his comments.

Thinking if we had closed the land there would have been no fire, if we
eliminate electricity no one can be shocked and there would be no need for
rolling blackouts, if we eliminate water in anything but an 8 oz cup we can
stop drownings, if we eliminate gas powered vehicles and factories and
breathing by animals and humans we can stop pollution, if we grow grass in
place of roadways and freeways we could produce more oxygen and reduce
global warming, if we don't eat anything that is alive we can stop
cannabalism, etc...

This would make for some broke, out of work always on the run from debt
collectors, stinky, hungry, out of breath cold people. Just the type of
place these idiots want.

So what would kill us first, teh debt collectors, the cold temps, the lack
of food(if you think about it plants are alive too) or the lack of
breathing?

Sorry had to vent, I feel much better now. Of course if I could give the
moron that wrote it just 1% of my common sense I would feel like the King of
the World and maybe we could get a decent writer on the staff!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: Land Closer due to fire in Flag

Well I must say that if there used to be wheeling here in Flag, there
is absolutely none now. Schultz Pass is closed, Snowbowl road is
closed, and from talking to the USFS guys guarding the FR gates they
wouldn't mind if everything was closed. Talking with some of the
hotshot crews, I learned the fire was caused by an unattended camp
fire right off of Snow Bowl road. As of this morning it has reached
2000 acres, with less than 5 percent containment. My favorite
running trails are all closed, pretty much the whole San Francisco
peaks area is closed, and everywhere there are no campfire signs up.
A-1 mountain also has a small fire burning from a campfire, but only
one crew is working it. Personally, I cannot leave my camp until the
fire has been covered in dirt, all of my extra water poured on it,
and I am positive it is out. Everyone do your part, carry an
extinguisher even for day trips in the desert, and use common sense
when burning.

On another track with the same idea, if the forest was closed, then there would
be absolutely no roads, trails, tracks etc...therefore, if there were a fire
(lightning) fire crews would have NO access!!!! Our trails in the forrests
are usually old logging and fire control roads, by using them we maintain
access to the areas for EVERYONE and this obviously includes
'emergency-services'!!!

Just our .02!!

Subject: Website - Classifieds

Classifieds section is now operational.

Also I added a "Webrings" page to list the webrings that the AzVJC
belongs to.

With this, the website is pretty much complete. I may decide later
on to add the ability to link pictures to Tech Articles, Classifieds
and maybe Product reviews.

If anyone finds a defect, please let me know.

Thanks

How about the fact that now that the logging is slowed down so much to save
the owls there is so much dead wood and under brush that it makes the fires
harder to get under control.

I like to think the responsible campers that control
their fires and put them out when they leave help
reduce forest fire risk because they gather all the
dead wood laying around on the ground and burn it
responsibly. No campers, more dead wood on the
ground, bigger hotter wild fires? Am I wrong?

I always use R&G Tire. They have several stores around town. I
usually go to the original store on the east side of Flowing
Wells between Wetmore and River. Great guys, very, very fast
service and reasonable pricing. These guys *RUN* when they are
busy to get you in and out as quickly as possible.
