View Full Version : The continuing saga of a broke 90 XJ

Don't know how many have followed this so a quick recap.

90 XJ - blown Dana 35. Got used but rebuilt(?) D-35 and slid under the rig, new gear oil.

Had some brake parts missing, needed new drum, brakes done, work fine.

Plans were to sell and put money into my 94 XJ

Update:

Test drive, low speed growl seems to come from D-35. Crawl under the rig. Gear lube leaking from front "yoke" area, not bad but still leaking.

Now my options:

Reduce price and sell to someone that may want to put another rear end under this thing or work on this one.

Donate it to a charity and write it off on my taxes.

Don't really have the time or inclination to screw with this thing anymore.

Constructive input would be appreciated. Like, what is it worth with this problem?

A lot of the parts would work on my 94 but I really don't want a parts vehicle sitting in the yard.

TIA,

Not sure about the growl. You may just have the wrong oil in it (some D35 has a factor limited slip that required additive).

A leaking rear D35 from the yoke seal is not hard to fix. Your looking at $10-$15 for the seal and about 1-2 hours of work. I'm not sure if A 1990 has a crush washer on the D35 but either way it's not hard to R&R the seal.

Be glad to help you if you need it.

Jim,

If your fed up, Just sell it off... XJ's are a dime a dozen.
If you decide you want to fix it.. Send her on up the hill and I'll slap an 8.25 under it for ya..
Good luck
Dave

Thanks Dave, I appreciate the offer and will keep it in mind if things don't work out.

I'm still running the gray 94 you brought down the hill for me. I'm happy with it and the 90 was just my wifes grocery getter. Trying to get enough out of the 90 to do some improvements on the 94. Have wanted to put some kind of posi-traction/locker in the rear of the 94 but understand the D-35 is a weak link.

Anyhow, time to get ready for work, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Jim

I don't think your charity would qualify for a tax write off. :D ;)

I appreciate the offer but I've made a deal for someone else to take ownership of the rig. That person may want the D-35 to put under it. :D

Thanks
