anyone know of a place that does this? on-line or in the valley...
either would work!! Thanks!!!!! -Rob

I'm going to replace the gears in my 2000 tj 4cy. My
question is what gearing should I choose and what are
the benefits of certain ratios. I was origanly going
to put in 4.56, but I have had allot of people tell me
to go with 4.88's. I'm running 31's right know but
within the next 6 months I'm upgrading to 32's or 33's

them myself I'm a pretty competent home mechanic. Any

If you have a decent color printer, you can buy photo paper and print
them yourself. I have done so with a number of pictures, even made
8x10s that are framed and people do not know that it isn't a
professional picture.
You could also check out any printing place or photo developing
place, I am sure they all have the capability these days since they
will provide them to you digitally from a roll.

I believe that it would be a big mistake to go with anything larger than
4.56:1. You are asking for trouble when you start offroading with the tiny
pinion sizes associated with D30 and D35C axles and 4.88:1 gears. Stick
with the 4.56:1 ratio and you will be more than happy. If, in the future,
you need lower gearing; get a 4:1 terralow kit for your NP231.

How about putting an anchor into the ground about 30 feet deep, then using a
the anchor chains from a large ship(about 2 feet thick links) and attach
that to the anchors? Possible a set of pins in the seat, when you notice it
gone you can call On-Star and have them set it off, the pins will push out
of the seat and make it too uncomfortable to drive? Oh yah forgot the
Rottie sitting inside that ahsn't eaten for a week.

Sorry to dissappoint or contradict everyone, but 4.88 is the way to
go on a 4 cyl. Randy's Ring and Pinion and everyone else I talked
to, said that 4.88's are not that weak as everyone is fearing. Also,
the difference between 4.10 and 4.56 is minimal at best. Why even
regear to 4.56's if you already have 4.10's? I am running 4.10's and
33's in my 4 cyl. and I don't ever (rarely) use 5th gear anymore.
Talking to a few other 4cyl owners that have regeared, they all agree
4.88s is the only way to go. Randy's said that they ahve sold
hundreds of 4.88's for the D35c and not one returned that was broken
from stress. Doing the math for gear/tire ratio the 4.88 will get
your power back for 33's or bigger.

My guess is it was some punk kid - the same ones that steal my tire
stem caps and the Godzilla toy from my dashboard.
An idea - do members have a unique # issued to them? I'd be happy to
use a sharpie and ink my member # directly on the sticker. That
would also add some accountability in case someone has a complaint so
they can contact the club about it. This may give the club some
leverage, too, in that our members agree to be held accountable to
each other, etc.
Thoughts?

Or we could make them ooze super strong glue, then if someone touches
them it glues their hands to your jeep. You then know who attempted
it, after you beat the hell out of them for touching my baby I'll cut
their hands off so that can be free, albeit with much more difficult
capabilty ff stealing anything ever again....

Casper,
It takes several specialized tools and a lot of experience to properly set up
axle gears. Yes, it can be done own your own, but if it's wrong at best
you'll be buying another new set of gears. I did put my own gears in a front
axle once due to economics and never had any problems. If you are looking for
someone to do it, Jim Allen of Canyon State Components has the tools and
experience. The last I heard he charges $100 an axle for labor.
Good Luck,

Not sure which "Randy " was the real "Randy", but, those gears will probably
make up for the power shortage and prevent breakage in other ways and other
areas.....
With the size of tires you are running I really can't see it being a
problem.
Get a 4:1 next and you will have the best for offroad and street.

Subject: RE: Re: 4.56 or 4.88s
I just spoke with Jack at Randy's Ring and Pinion. He said that there is a
definite inherent strength difference between the 4.56:1 and the 4.88:1
pinion, with the greater strength going towards the 4.56:1. Jack said that
if you were going to be using 33" or larger tires and you were going to do
serious rock crawling or offroad trails, you'd be better off going with the
4.56:1. Jack also said that most people like the 4.56:1 axle ratio better
ON ROAD with 33" and smaller tires because of the closer match to factory
RPMs at road speeds with the 4.56:1 when compared with the 4.88:1.
Bottom line... and this is straight from Randy's Ring and Pinion:
If you are going to use 33" or larger tires OR if you are going to do any
serious offroading... go with the 4.56:1 axle ratio.
There is no arguing with the fact that a larger pinion with more tooth
engagement WILL BE STRONGER in any given situation.
Okay... so hundreds of thousands of Jeep owners with 4 cylinder motors and
4.88:1 gears have not broken their pinions...
How many of them actually use their Jeeps the way we do? Why risk having
your pinion be the weak link when you can gain a MUCH lower crawl ratio by
going to a 4:1 terralow transfer kit in the future?
Think ahead and don't end up having to do the job twice because you made a
mistake. You'll end up being much happier in the future if you do the job
right, stick with the stronger pinion, and modify your transfer case in the
future if you need a lower crawl ratio.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

A big FAWK U to the Desert Crap stores! In fact, we should post
something on the website about where NOT to buy parts, etc., and put
them at the top of the list. Awful customer service, piss-poor
mechanic work, the list goes on... This seems to come up about once
a month on the list but still manages to piss me off when I hear the
name of their store.

That is so funny...It doesnt matter how smart you are to find yourself
thinking "what the hell is going on" and for you to sit there and let the
clutch out repeadedly over and over again, or to shift from drive to reverse
to drive again before you realize what you did...and then look around to see
if anyone is laughing at you.
I am not speaking from experience or anything like that, its just what I have
heard....you know?

Joe West

That is so funny...It doesnt matter how smart you are to find yourself
thinking "what the hell is going on" and for you to sit there and let the
clutch out repeadedly over and over again, or to shift from drive to reverse
to drive again before you realize what you did...and then look around to see
if anyone is laughing at you.
I am not speaking from experience or anything like that, its just what I have
heard....you know?
