Unfortunately this poll won't tell anyone much. I could vote for
everything given the stated purpose. Each of these tires excelles at
a specific purpose and all of them are worthy of recommendation.
Although if you are looking for good street tires with off road
ability it would be a couple; whereas mud would be another; and rocks
would be yet another. There is no tire that excelles everywhere over
any other tire. It is all based on priority of use and qualities that
determine the best tire.

If I could, I'd have a set of all 4 for use in their specific
strengths.

While they won't help me, I've seen numerous posts from YJ owners looking
for TJ flares and then instructions on how to mount them on the YJ.
I just got my new Quadratec catalog and they are now selling TJ style flares
that are a direct fit on YJs. They mount with existing screws and holes

They are made by Xenon

Just FYI

Subject: Re: How much Vibe before Mods Required

Rick,

Unlike the Beachboys, there is no such thing as "Good Vibrations" in a
vehicle. Even though you can't feel them after 25MPH, they're still
there...the frequency or speed of the vibration has just changed so you no
longer feel it. Unfortunately, all your seals, bearings, nuts, and bolts
still know its there.

Some 3" lift kits come with spacers to drop your T-case skid plate down an
inch to get the drive shaft angle closer to normal. This "solution" is a
lot like having a 2" lift! Another approach is a motor mount lift, where
the front of the motor is raised, which angles the T-case (and drops the
output end) to accomplish the same thing. The best solution (read most
expensive) is to install a Constant Velocity (CV) drive shaft. Not only
does it get rid of the vibration without other compromises, but they are
usually much stronger than the stock drive shaft.

Bottom line: Don't simply ignore the vibration because you don't feel it at
high speeds. That's like turning up the radio to drown out the rapping
bearing.

Or you can do what I do, ask if there is a club discount while you are
shopping around.
The club is getting to the size now that most truck, 4 wheel shops and
retailers know or have heard of AzVJC. The smarter company's see the
potential of giving a discount for the possibility of free advertisement on
this forum. Several members have posted good and bad experiences with
business and believe it or not it has an impact on the company. Good and
bad. I can tell you there are shops and dealers in the valley that I will
not visit just because not one but several individuals have posted negative
experiences with them. On the positive side I have gotten good advice on who
has the deals and the better service for my business. So company's if you
are reading this take heed the force is with us.

Just our two cents!!

Ok, I am going to chime in on this one...

I think a few of you are a little too harsh on John. I have met John once
or twice, so I am not defending him because I know him. REMEMBER, THIS IS
MY OPINION......

John called just to *find out* what the legal limit was on this particular
subject...

> > >> No, I did not say WHEN you would be out there, or

Do you really think the cops are going to sit there now for a week to see
if anyone actually does it? Like Rick said, The cops are always 3-4
hours late anyway, so maybe if he said that they would be out there for
lunch, the cops MIGHT show up around 7:00 PM.

John was just going about it leaglly......
> > >>
> > >> I'd rather call and know for sure, rather than risk

Hell, I can't afford a citation, higher insurance premiums, and another 2
nights at a damn driving class!

This is pretty damn funny to me!
> > >>
> > >> Anybody with outstanding warrants might want to pass
> > >>

So, John might have been bored at work, hell, I am bored 7 out of the 8
hours I am at work! What else is there to do? Flame people on the web
site because they want to screw around a little?
How bout make a few calls and try to help out fellow Jeepers so the cops
don't end up making $$ from us in citations, so we can put that $$ back
into our Jeeps!!! (and no this isn't a plug for John Hunter either :), but
I have heard he does good work)

OK, flame away at me, my delete key is ready!

John R. if you do get a response, let me know what it is.

I think he wrote it the wrong way. It looks to me like his intentions were
good but he should have waited till he got an answer before telling us. Then
he could have went one of two ways gave us the heads up that it is illegal
OR he could have told us that the Cops don't care and he'll be meetin' us
there.

Stu raises some great points. I don't think its appropriate either. This is what I expect out of a bunch of high schoolers, not the AZVJC. Its not that far out from Tempe to hit some real trails.

Maybe I am just getting too old, but is 4 wheelin' in the middle of Tempe the kind of picture we want to give to everyone that lives in that area?

"And if they can dump, we can wheel." Because someone else may or may not have done something legal or illegal, that makes it OK for us to do something else? Sorry, but I think that statemetn lacks some fundamental logic.

I do know for certain that there are dust abatement (sp) laws in Maricopa County and that all cities and property owners have to abide by them. Even if you don't get cited for it, the property owner can and then you have stuck that individual with a fine (and yes, they are held responsible even though they had nothing to do with it). Is this the right thing to do?

I guess my point is pretty simple.....we, the off-road community, are under the gun from just about everyone except those who ride some kind of vehicle on a trail. Given all of the trails in Arizona, why wheel on a lot in the middle of Tempe? Will you be doing something that promotes are sport in the eyes of the public? Will your actions warm the hearts of those who are sitting on the fence, undecided....trying to figure out if they should choose "our side" or the greenies?

Like I said, this is not a flame.....just some questions that some folks might want to consider. From my view point, I can see nothing but the potential for trouble rising out of this.

thanks,

Stu

One last thought....if you do decide to go through with this, do me a favor and remove/cover the AZVJC sticker, if there is one on your Jeep. I hope the reason for this request is obvious.

Club,
OK Heres the deal. When your really really hungry, cold pizza tastes
good? Ok I dont get out much and I have the serious urge to wheel. Across
the street from me on Kyrene and Elliot is a very large field that has been
used for dumping dirt from personal pools. The area is like the size of a
very large parking lot of a very large grocery store. I have been out there a
few times and there are no signs. I do know the Tempe lets you sell your car
on the lot so they cant be to picky. And if they can dump, we can wheel.
While it may sound easy or a push over, but in reality, it can be
extremly hard. I guarantee you will flex your suspension harder here than
you ever will at Wood Pecker or Ajax. But the nice thing is, it is soft
dirt, no rocks to give you dents or break parts. Also, you can make your
line as hard as you want. Pick a direction and get silly. If you get stuck,
it it easy to Hilift or dig out. (Most of the times I go with my buggy, I
get stuck.

:::WHY:::
Cause I need to go wheeling and this is a good as it gets for me. I and I
dont like playing alone. Its weird not haveing anyone laughing at you when
you dig.

:::Time and Directions:::
Thursday Night June 13th, 7:00 PM
I plan on haveing dinner at the Sonic Drive-In across the street from the
field at about 7, then maybe head over for a couple of hours. There is also
AMPM Arco gas station lcoated right next door so you can get gas, or a place
to air up if you want. The Sonic and AMPM ar located on the North West
corner of Kyrene and Elloit.

:::The Plan:::
I know I have 3 people all ready planning on attending so hope fully this
would be a good crowd. (Hey, Thursday night TV is all reruns anways). The
plan, have some burgers and fries while sitting in my 4wd, have a couple of
hours of kick *** wheeling and fun, and still make it home in time to catch
the news and Jay Leno.

I tried to post this thru the web page but it didnt work. So please email
me back so I have an idea how many to expect. This field IS BIG, I can
easily see 20 to 30 jeeps out there playing and no one getting in someones
way.

See ya soon.

Subject: Re: BFG vs GY MT's

Okay I have to clarify something here. The original "slipping off the rocks" statement was made by either Ross or Bill M or both. Anyway the point was basically a comparison of the side lugs on the Swamper SX to the MT/R. It's obvious that the SX has the most aggressive side lugs out there. It was in reference to using the sidewall lugs to bite into a vertical surface and carry you up it on the rockface on the sidewall lugs alone. I've only seen the SX do this. A BFG, MT/R, Pro Comp or any other tire including the Swamper TSL radial and SSR could never be expected to do what was discussed in this scenario. I've witnessed it with the SX's first hand and driven on many 4+ trails on my MT/R's. Next to the Swamper SX you can't find a better offroad tire. Of course other than the Swamper Bogger you couldn't find a worse onroad tire than the SX. Apples and oranges folks. The MT/R is the best compromise out there for dual use.

When I finally get my trailer this summer and begin towing the TJ to runs you can bet that there will be a set of SX's on my TJ within months. Of course I will also keep the MT/R's in the garage for when I don't use the trailer or go play in the snow.

seemed like they did not wear at all! BUT, they were not *sticky* on the
rocks. I now have the Pro Comp MT's, and they stick real nice, and the
sidewall is great so far. I ran Predator Saturday night, down to 11 psi,
and the tires were awsome. I have been very impressed with them, and they
are cheaper than BFG's. They do seam to wear a little quicker than the
BFG's. As far as GY MT's, I have heard they are great but do have a
problem slipping off rocks. I don't have the experiance with them, only
what I read from fellow members.
Oy ya, on road, the pro comps are really nice. They have that nice hum,
but they do not wonder, and thats with both sways disco'd!

Rick,

After owning a YJ for 4 years and the TJ for 2 years I think I might have an opinion on this ;)

I think any amount of driveline vibe should try to solved. You'd be surprised at how short a life ujoints and bearings have when you don't deal with the problem and let it slide. My rear CV just about came apart on the TJ one night because I was too lazy to keep playing with the CV angle until I got it just right. I could literally move it back and forth with about an inch of play in it. I only ran it with vibes for a few months. Honest. I also got lazy and kept ignoring the vibes from the front driveshaft. I know I should have gotten that new Tom Wood driveshaft sooner (or least gotten the stock one balanced) but I kept putting it off. Well by the time I got the new shaft the front output seal on the tcase was leaking and the bearing was making noise. I had to drop the tcase and split it open to replace that bearing. What a major PITA and it could have been prevented. Now I wonder how much life is left in the pinion bearings and the rear output bearing. Who knows!

Anyway I think its best to resolve this. If you don't have lifted motor mounts now is the time to give that a try. You can also try the cam bolt kit on the upper rear arms but this isn't nearly as effective as the MM lift or the adjustable rear arms. Maybe you only need a washer or two to space the crossmember down a bit. If your not sure let me know. I'd be happy to help you work through it. Heck, I might even be willing to get my hands dirty too :)

I spoke to soon on that 3" lift. I have a noticiable vibe between 20 and 25 mph. Not shaking the Jeep apart or anything but it's there. How much is bad? I normally blow through that speed pretty quick but I don't what abnormal wear (it is my daily ride).

Subject: ::OT::WHOA! HOLD ON About Thursday Night.....

This whole idea was supposed to be for fun. The last thng I wanted was to
piss somebody or, worse, start a fight among the group. I thought it would
be fun. My thoughts were, "Hmm.. Get some burgers, and some fries, do a
little wheeling for an hour or two, and swap some stories." This is not, a
beer fest, or shoot your guns or race around and play tag with the jeeps.
Just some playin on the dirt hills with our 4x4s. THATS IT.
I DID NOT, nor did I WANT this to turn into such bull#$@%. I dont know
about you people, but between my shop, trying to pay an employee, keep the
IRS off my back, pay a landlord, keep a grilfreind happy, keep a business
running, and trying to keep both of my POS 4x4 running, I all ready have
enough drama in my life thank you. And I imagine everyone else in the club
has their own problems to deal with, kids, mortage, IRS, etc, etc, and there
jobs. The last thing we need is more drama. I think we can all agree on that
I plan on going, I have been there dozens of times myself, it is my
little play area, Sad thats all I have time for, but I will take it.
PLEASE, let the issue drop. If you want to come, great. Yes, I will enjoy
the company, wheeling by yourself sucks. If you have a probelm with it well,
Im truly sorry, offending people was the last thing on my mind. We will be
on a or best behavoir. Promise. I dont want to lose my favorite place to
wheel any more than other poeple are worried about our club getting a bad
rap. So before this gets any worse... let it go. We are all grown ups, we
can do what we want and take the heat if we start a fire. But we dont need
to divide the club like this. Not on something so trival.

If you still need to voice your opionin about what I want to do, or if
you have a personal a problem with me, or even the poeple going. Please
flame personaly, and spare evrybody else the drama and save the space for
tires, dents, lifts, lockers.....

Again, I deeply apologize for the trouble.
Sincerly,
John Kanicsar

. . . but I guess most of you didn't.

I wanted to know if it was legal or not, as Mike pointed out (thanks,
Mike!). If you have a question about something, don't make up your
own answers, they may not hold up in court.

I also said that:

1. I did not give my last name

2. WHERE the event would happen

3. WHEN the event would happen

4. WHO would attend.

I will still post the answer I get, and if you don't want to know,
don't read my post for the answer.

. . . and for those of you who jumped all over me, I have this to say
to you: (in the wicked witch voice)

"I'll get you, my little pretty, and your little dog, too!" :)

Subject: Re: New Product: TJ flares for YJs

Hmmm,

I once owned a YJ and when I look at my TJ flares I can see that not only is the flare larger but the sheetmetal opening is too. Most TJ on YJ flare conversions are done because the owner wants a larger wheel opening and has to use a sawzall to accomodate the bigger flares. Before I got the TJ I looked into this mod too. But as far as a trail Jeep goes these new look alike flares are for the posers. Whats the point if you are not making more room for bigger tires?

My 2 cents for now,

Scott

Chris Krieg wrote:

While they won't help me, I've seen numerous posts from YJ owners looking
for TJ flares and then instructions on how to mount them on the YJ.
I just got my new Quadratec catalog and they are now selling TJ style flares
that are a direct fit on YJs. They mount with existing screws and holes

They are made by Xenon

Just FYI
