My previous reply was on the MTR's vs. BFG. I re-read your note and realized
you were asking about the GY MT's. My thought on those is...don't bother.
You'd be much better off w/ either the BFG MT's or the GY MT/R's

OK,
I called the city of Tempe Police department's information number
(480-966-6211), explained what you wanted to do, and they said to
call the Tempe City code compliance division (480-350-8372). I called
them and got a recording explaining that they were recieving
excessive call volumes, and to leave a message describing the
complaint or nuisance, my number, and they would call me back.
I'll post the answer I get when they call back.
I'd rather call and know for sure, rather than risk a citation.
No, I did not say WHEN you would be out there, or WHO wanted to go.
Personally, I'm betting on citations for all who show. Remember: that
also means points on your license, and higher insurance premiums.

Subject: Re: Fw: Radiators for a TJ
Picked up a new radiator from Hawkes on 710 E broadway
in Mesa for 200 + tax and $5 core. Was pretty
straight forward, the compressor line sort of got in
the way a little, wasnt too bad. The two bottom bolts
that mount radiator to the body were a little tight
getting in there so took a little extra time. I
suggest to remove the bottom first so you dont have
the weight of the radiator pressing on them. And when
installing put the two top bolts in first.
The mount bolts are all the same except for the four
for the fan shroud. The stock ones are too small for
the mounts on the radiator, i searched my spare bolts
and found the ones that mount the stock side step
brackets to the frame fit like a charm. I had to
drill the shroud holes bigger with a 5/16" bit and the
upper driver side hole was slightly too high so that
hole had to get a little bit extra. The lower
passenger side shroud hole doesnt even come close to
lining up, its a good 1" to 1 1/2" off, so i ended up
with just 3 mounting bolts, it seemed pretty secure so
i'm not overly concerned about it.
Took it for a road test 8 miles through tempe and back
home on the freeway and it ran slightly cooler than it
did stock. The guage never read over 210 at 3k rpm
and A/C on full. With A/C off and at an idle it runs
steady at i'd guess between 200 and 205. I went over
to pep boys to see what they had for electric fans but
wasnt too impressed so i'll hold off on that project.
But this radiator is definately better than the stock
one which had a visable hairline crack about 5" long
and stress marks all the way across the bottom. I
think it was getting ready to blow the whole section
out, and was definatly loosing preassure and fluid
causing it to run way hotter than it should have been.
I have about 40k miles left on my extended warranty
but i know if i took it in they'd keep it for a week
and the 3rd party warranty company loves to refuse
stuff based on the lift and tires. I'm sure thats
what caused the radiator to fail ;) Plus theres a
$100 deductable, for the extra $119 i have my jeep up
and running again and dont have to fuss with bumming a
ride back and forth and *****ing with the dealership.
I think its a good swap replacing a faulty OEM part
thats bound to fail if it hasnt already. Thanks all
for your direction and suggestions!

Hello Gang,
I have an 87 XJ with Auto tranny and A/C and using the old bottle system with my radiator. Well today I went into the arizonaXJ archives and found a posting on this radiator change out issue. That lead me to Dr. Radiator.
I called today to get an all metal 3 core GDI radiator with cap for my XJ for 115.00 dollars plus tax = 124.32
But the best part is I got overnight delivery for 0.00, nada! I did some check before going to Dr. Radiator and could find anyone that could beat them. The part # is 1193 and the phone no. is 1-888-723-4286, ext. 293, ask for Mike.
BTW, he did know about AZ_VJC & arizonaXJ. That did make a big difference. He said he has had many callers from our club. Now I can say good bye to the old crappy bottle system.....................................

In the research I did before buying Goodyear Wrangler MT/R is that the GY's
have much better sidewall then most tires. They are also stickier then most
tires as well. There were a few people that responded to me saying that the
MT/R is a much better offroad tire then BFG, or the Big O brand. And they a
about equal in price. (granted I did not haggle with Big O so Big O might
have been able to come down to beat the cost of a GY MT/R)

Chris,
I'v owned both. The MT/R's are much, much more durable. They have superior traction onroad and offroad. I was even surprised that they performed well in the snow and ice. They are also quieter onroad. Did I mention that they are more durable? ;) For your money you will not find a better offroad tire that is also great for street use. Goodyear hit a homerun with these tires.
If you check the recent post from JoeyK you'll find dozens of responses regarding the MT/R's. If you read them you will find that the price isn't that much more. You'll love them.

Peter,
That sounds larger than the Coves Cleanup 2001, that must have been a

There once was a suggestion of a swap meet/maintenance type get together but I don't think they could find a place large enough. I think they were trying to get a Checker to allow us to use the parking lot in case parts were needed but with the number of members in this group it would never do.

You gotta be kidding me! You had nothing better to do
with your day than to call and wait on hold just to
rat out other members in the jeep club? Especially
when the Police have better things to attend to such
as burglaries, murders, rapes, and armed robberies.
Everytime i've tried to get the police to help me on
something such as when my house was burglerized, or
when my jeep was broken into, or the time someone hit
a car of mine in front of my house and took off, or
when i was creamed by some drunk on 7th st, it took
several hours for them to respond, even then they
couldnt do anything about it. You have to waste their
time because someone just *might* go drive their jeep
in some dirt in an empty parking lot. Did they give
you a Junior Police officer badge so you can
personally come down and hand out tickets?
Next time you rat someone out, save yourself some time
and let them know that the wiring on my brake light is
suspect and intermittantly doesnt work. I also drove
10mph over the speed limit today, and last week a gas
reciept blew out on the highway. Oh yea, i also didnt
signal before turning into my driveway, I tore the
label off my mattress, and left the cap off a felt tip
pen last night too.
Thanks,

Gotta agree with Rick on this one. Now you've notified the Police that it
does happen and they will watch for it. This we don't need. Before now, they

Subject: 3 core GDI Radiator Good Deal!!
Hello Gang,
I have an 87 XJ with Auto tranny and A/C and using the old bottle system with my radiator.

Subject: RE: BFG vs GY MT's
In the research I did before buying Goodyear Wrangler MT/R is that the GY's
have much better sidewall then most tires. They are also stickier then most
tires as well. There were a few people that responded to me saying that the
MT/R is a much better offroad tire then BFG, or the Big O brand. And they a
about equal in price. (granted I did not haggle with Big O so Big O might
have been able to come down to beat the cost of a GY MT/R)

There was a BLM meeting in Tucson last Thursday evening at the El
Rio Center....don't know of one this week.
There was a pretty good percentage of pro-land-use folks there, I
would guess about 40% out of maybe 40 people. Some of the
greenies are pretty spooky. We need to make sure to attend all of
the meetings that we can.
If there is one this week, I would like to know also.

I always hear of the businesses that give AZVJC club discounts but it
seems like it's always after I have purchased what I needed. Is
there somewhere that lists the local companies that give the club
discounts?
Right now I'm just making note of each company as I read the posts.
I think this would be a good addition to the site.

Chris,
I'v owned both.

Thanks,
rick

Gotta agree with Rick on this one. Now you've notified the Police that it
does happen and they will watch for it. This we don't need. Before now, they
probably had no idea it was happening.
