Subject: Tomken lifts

Does anyone run, (or know anyone who runs), a Tomken 4" lift for
a TJ? I am thinking that I like their Johnny Joint control arms,
which they buy the joint portion of from Currie Enterprises. They
are supposed to be totally rebuildable, and tough. The entire system
seems like a true bargain, as it has four coils, (progressively
wound), upper and lower control arms for front and rear, and related
hardware, like tcase spacers, sway bar discos, etc. Shocks, however,
are not included, but there are many good choices there. I am hoping
to get some feedback on the performance of Tomken's TJ system before
I buy ANY lift. I know that a lot of you TJ guys run either RE or
Tera, but I am partial to Tomken. Thoughts?

I started typing directions, then realized that even though I
went on this run today, I can't remember the road names to get you
there. Contact Dave O'Boyle (davidoboyle@h...) and he can
tell you, as he led this trip today. He pretty much discovered this
trail, to the best of my knowledge. What a fun run!

It's south of 10 off of Jackrabbit Trail, not to far from
Estrella Park.

Good run today. The trail is not all that long BUT it does have something for everyone. With a couple of places where one WOULD NEED ONE S.O.B OF A JEEP (+4.5)
Will post pictures soon

Subject: Transmission Trouble/FIXED!

Thanks to all,
I wanted to write and thank everyone who helped me with advice on my transmission problem. Come to find out after many stressful hours of troubleshooting,,
The set of vacuum lines that run down the fire wall to the transmission, half way down below the line of sight inside the wire loom, they were broken. So we replaced all the lines to the transmission and the ones to the 4x4 engaging valve unit on the front axle as well. Then, still not completely working right. We have the a/c and heater working now, but now it is running very rough and not shifting very well. Had the battery check, ( it was only 2 months old from Checker), and YEP!, the battery had a broken plate that was grounding out. Since the computer works on the closed electrical system, having the grounded plate the cycle of current was not complete. Change the battery and WOW! YES WOW!!
Gee that really seems not a hard fix now that you talk about it, but if you were to have asked me two days ago I would have said something much different.
It is great having friends not only to 4Wheel with, but also there to help out with our problems. I appreciate all of your help, and hope someday I can return the favor...........

Thank you,
Casper

Subject: Safford 4x4 Event!

Hello Gang,
I thought I would pass along a possibility and information to the group. I didn't know about this event until tonight, and of course it was to late by then to do anything.
Oh well, today here in Safford at the Gila raceway there as a 4x4 event held. It had three separate events for those that entered. The cost was 15.00 to participate. There was the pulling contest, and the mud bogg contest and the obstacle course. All rigs are competing in their own class = Full size, suv's, etc. I am not sure of the exact classification as of yet, but I will get the information this next week and post it for all to read. I understand that the obstacle challenge is very much a challenge. Those that I talked to say it was great! A friend of ours running in the Full size class won first prize in the mud bogg contest and won 175.00 in cash. I understand that there is going to be another challenge in July. I do not know the dates or any other information as of yet. It is a very organized activity with plenty of seating in the stands.
Well, the reason I am writing you all is because I have been working on setting up an overnight run here in Safford, and thought I would pass this on to you all to see if any of you would like to make this activity part of our fun. We could do the challenge before or after the run, or we could do the run on a separate day completely. Knock this around and talk about it as a club, and in the mean time I will get the complete information on the 4x4 event. It would sure look great having our club all lined up during the event for the show and shine. There will other clubs there of course, Gila Monsters, SideWinders to name a few. I would like to see other clubs from Tucson come over to do the same.
Oh BTW, I have heard that a stock Cherokee took first in the mud bogg for his class, but you know how rumors are; I will find out the facts tomorrow.
Thanks Gang,

Casper

Sharky,

Lot's of us have had the exact same problem. I welded mine back up before
the bracket broke... as did Doug Ballard, Chris Krieg... EVERYONE who wheels
with their TJ NEEDS and has a 3+ lift on it needs to go out RIGHT NOW and
look at their rear trackbar bracket where it attaches to the rear
differential housing. All of the broken ones I've seen start cracking on
the drivers side outside edge where the bracket is welded to the axle.

GO NOW!!! I guarantee some of you have this bracket broken... check it
before it does what Sharky's did.

Excellent advise. A lot of stress is focused on that single bracket, and on
the right upper rear "frame" bracket. I've seen both brake...frequently. My
frame side broke off and my axle side was cracking. Reinforcing them is
smart preventative maintenance...cause you'll need to do it sooner or later.

Subject: Help Needed please

Hi all,

I need a favor from someone out there. Dion and I ran Predator last
night and it claimed a victim! Actually, it claimed 3 total, 2 on the
first obsticle, and then me at the very end! I didn't even have a problem
on the hard lines! I cought my Drag link on a rock, and now it looks like
the "golden arches"! Does anyone out there have a spare drag link that I
can barrow untill I can get OR-Fab to build me a new one? If you already
have the OR-Fab setup, do you still have the original that I can use?

Thanks!!

BTW, Flexyxj was out on another trail, with Keith, Hackle, and a couple
others that I can not recall names, but they all helped out on my Jeep
after they finished Terminator. I tell you, this is the BEST club,
everybody was willing and DID help out on the trial. Flexy came up and
adjusted my front end so I can get home. I did 45 the whole way home, I
did not want to get "death wobble", so I found my comfort spot and just
took my time getting home.

THANKS for all of your help last night!!!!!

Please give me a call if you have a spare that I can use.

I am at 40th street and Bell, but I will travel any where in the valley.

Subject: Tonneau is done

The steel Tonneau by Bill Aylesworth is now complete. It is welded to the body behind the seats, bolted through the rear roll bar and also bolted with 4 beefy tie-down hooks along the edge on both sides. I believe that you could lift the Jeep off the ground with the u-hooks.

<http://albums.photopoint.com/j/Reorder?u=22547&a=116247>

The top and the piece behind the seats has been Herculiner'd and the PowerTank and hi-lift are both bolted down. The last 2 pictures show a different way to manage your tow strap. I used 2 - 5" flanges and a piece of threaded 3" pipe. The inner flange is bolted to the Mountaineer Rack and the outer one screws on and off for access to the strap.

The top weld behind the seats has been capped with a piece of 1" angle aluminum and the rear has been sealed with the swing out door with a piece of 1" flat aluminum. The only thing that rattles now are the padlocks on the hi-lift.

You guys nailed on the head. It is a toss up between what I fix more, the
older YJ shock mounts, or Track bars. While we are on the subject here a
couple other "problem"spots I have noticed.(While not as common, it is still
something you should check)

* On any jeep that has a control arm, check the backet to the axle. If you
dont have joints in your controlarms, and do a lot of wheeling, you should
pay extar attention to these.
* Also, I have seen some Cherokees, and a few Grand Cherokee were the
brackes to the unibody was tearing out. Same thing as above, no joint, better
check .
* The older YJ rear axle lower shcok tabs. These things love to break.
Cause.. to much wheel travel and shocks are too short or a the shocks are to
stiff on the up cycle..

The good news if any of these things do happen, cheap and easy fix for most
of them. The sooner you catch it, the cheapr and quicker it will be to fix.
While you are down looking, give everything a check, look for leaks,
rattles, loos u-joints. Haveing a driveshaft fall off on the way to work
really sucks. Dont ask me how I know.. I dont want to talk about it.

Sharky,

Didn't you read my warning post about 8 weeks ago? This has happened to me and countless others in the past. I had Bill Mish repair it for me. This area is very prone to failure so I recommend everybody keep an eye on their welds and if your running big tires reinforce this area.

Good luck!

This is a general question to all members. A group of us from Florida
have been looking at your scenery for a long time view magazines and
the web and we are envious of your trails. What we would like to do
is come out west next year, 2002, and ride with you folks. We have a
tractor and trailer rig that can haul 7 jeeps for us. Our first
question to the club is, when is a good time of year to come out and
ride? We are working on changing the rigs from mud hounds into rock
crawlers and money is why we have to wait till next year. By
listening to the other members advice to each other on what works and
what doesn't we are getting a clearer picture of the changes we need
to make back here.
Thanks in advance for you information
