I got both the Kilby Skid and the 3" TeraFlex lift installed yesterday. Thanks to all who emailed me tips, tricks and advice. Both jobs went very well. I was very surprised to see the difference between the 2" spacer and the 3" springs was actually 2 inches and still no vibes even w/o the Tcase lower.
Thanks again.

Special thanks the Daryl and Russell for braving the heat to help me install it.

I thought so too, but there is a note on the install instructions from TeraFlex - "Most 2.5l installations do not vibrate.....you may wish to leave the transfercase lowering kit off." Like that was a big decision to leave the Tcase kit off :-)

Subject: Driveline Vibes
Since I installed my 3" lift with no vibes I started thinking about this vibe problem. I'm not sure I understand why the vibes occur because most of the lifts done also include larger tires. Here's what I'm thinking:
1. When I bought my Jeep it had 215/75 tires (28" tall).
2. I add a 3" spring lift which increase the driveshaft angle
3. I add 33" tall tires which raises the axle and decreases the driveshaft angle
In this senario isn't the net difference only .5 inches so I shouldn't expect vibes since the driveshaft angle isn't changing that much. Is that line of thinking right? I know most lifts are higher than 3 inches but most of the taller lifts are also running 35" plus tires. I don't plan to go taller so I'm not really worried about vibes but I would like to know what piece of the puzzle I am missing here.

Lifting the axle with tires doesnt push your axle back up in to your
Jeep, you still have the same angle from the lift, otherwise the
tires wouldn't fit. If that were true you would have to have a
magical hand holding the Jeep down while the tires lifted the axle!

Bigger tires don't change the drive line angle, they raise the whole jeep.
The lift is what makes the change. If you haven't lowered your transmit ion
skid plate with a 3" lift, that could be your problem. The other solution,
though much more expensive, is a CV (Constant Velocity) type drive shaft.

Rick,
Point number 3 is not correct. Changing tires will not affect the suspension or driveline geometry. The tire and axle is unsprung weight. If you run a tire that is 4 inches taller than stock you will gain 2" of actual clearance and everything else will also move up 2". The weight on your springs has not changed. Yes you raise the axle but everything else moves up the same distance.
The 4 cylinders have a shorter driveline. The longer the driveshaft is the less the angles change when doing a lift. If you are running a motor mount lift this would also help. If not there really isn't any reason for you to do a MM lift since you are vibe free.
Count your blessings and enjoy the new clearance!

Hi everyone! I stumbled across this group a few days ago and just
had to join. I've been looking for folks in AZ to do some serious
wheelin' with since I bought my TJ a few years ago. Looks like I
finally found that group!
About my rig:
'99 TJ Sport, Chili-Pepper Red w/black soft-top
Rear: Dana 44 (w/Trac-Lok and 3.73 gears)
Front: not sure if it's a 30 or 35c
4" Trailmaster lift
33x12.50x15 BFG All-Terrains
15x8 American Racing Python wheels (2 shiny, 2 not)
Trailmaster Steering Stabilizer
pre-runner and 2" receiver bumper from fly-n-hi
nerf bars
front tow-hooks
I look forward to running some of the trails with the AZVJC. Sounds
like just the group I've been looking for! I know there's a few mods
I need before I'm ready to participate in an organized run (rear tow
hooks and a full size spare for starters), but now that I found a
local group, I've got all the incentive I need.
See ya soon,

Joe all you need to participate in a run is the JEEP!!!!! It sounds
like you are pretty hooked up! Your TJ sounds familiar, I might have
seen you around. I live in gilbert, and I have a Green TJ with 32"
mudders Eagle 589s with custom yellow paint in the holes stickers all
over my Jeep with the AZVJC sticker just above the Jeep decals. I now
have a big Independent Truck Co sticker on the windshield now, but it
used to be a yellow ORU sticker. Anyway hope to see you around!! -Rob

This is the club you have been looking for. Welcome
Looks like you have a capable rig.
You just need the spare. Flats can happen anywhere. (recommendation)
If you want instead of tow hooks you could put a clevis/shackle in the rear
receiver. Just a thought.
See you on the trail.

Yea yeah yeah I hear ya :) don't poke too much you gotta get those d44's

saw a greenish YJ w/ the sticker on it. Hi to you. Also A fellow down the
street used to have a green YJ w/ the sticker on it too. He now has a white
ford truck instead in his driveway. The area I am speaking of is 36th street
and Cholla area. I could almost hit his house with a rock. If you read this
give me a holler. I seriously didn't know what the sticker was for until
recently, now I am keeping my eyes open. And to JM I think you will probably
receive the same friendly welcome as I did but probably with less guff :)
not that a little guff now and then isn't appreciated.

stickers? Not to sound too jerky and ready to jump on this one but it helps
to know :) Also I read of a clean up run. Anyone know if there is another in
the near future? I think it would be a good way to get to know people face

Subject: For Mesa in Sedona
Sorry to post this on the reflector, but any direct mail to Mesa keeps
bouncing from both of my mail servers.....so I'll try it this way.
-----------------------------------------
Hi Mike,
Well, first off, congrats on getting a new job.
Where to camp....if you want a nice campground (<$20 per night), I would
recommend Moab Valley RV Park. They handle both tent camping and RVs....and
their cabins are really nice too! I have stayed there for the past two
years and enjoy it. They have very nice showers and such, kept clean, etc.
We had several of our friends stay there in April and they said they would
come back next year, so it can't be too bad. You can get the current info
at www.moab-utah.com
As for tracks or routes for the Moab trails, the only ones I have are the
ones I have presonally ran. I would not recommend them for your XJ. The
waypoints I have on my web site cover most of the local Moab trails, but not
all of them. I did not include the easier trails in the collection (it
takes a fair amount of time to build those waypoint files and I have no
intention of running the easy trails....at least, not for now).
The best book to get for trail info is the one I listed on my web site (by
Charles Wells). You can find them all over Moab....very popular and the
best one around period. His book lists about 45 Moab area trails. They are
rated most easy to most difficult. I would recommend anything in the high
end of easy up through about the middle of the difficult group for your
setup. You'll have good traction but with 30" tires and a long wheel base,
you will get hung up on the rock ledges that are very common throughout the
Moab trails. The book also has pictures of the obstacles for each trail,
which gives you an idea of what everything looks like before you get there.
You might consider Gemini Bridges. I think you should make that without too
much problem and the scenery is REALLY nice....plus, it is a very well
marked trail. Get the book, check out the trail, run it, and then you can
compare its level of difficulty to the others in the book to see what else
you want to run.
One thing for sure.....don't run anything difficult by yourself. Take LOTS
of water. It is going to be warm up there. Moab is a 4000' desert and it
will be pretty warm in June. It was already popping 90 on a couple of days
in late April when we attended the JU run.
My travel time to Moab was right at 10 hours.....and I don't haul very
fast.....~65 MPH on the freeway and 55~60 MPH on the two lane roads. That
includes a 30 minute stop in Tuba City for lunch and a couple of 10~15
minute gas stops also. With you already being almost a couple of hours
closer than I am, and your ability to "haul pretty good" as you put it, you
will be there in much less time than Donna and I took.

I posted a Trip Report on the WEB site. For some reason it didn't get
posted here, so here is a copied version:
>-----------------snip-------------------<
First of all I wanted to thank everybody that showed up for putting
up with my first time leading a trip. We didn't end up where I had
planned but, the trail was good.
We met at 8:30AM, there were about 10 of us (I was running a bit
late). A friend and his daughter had met me prior to hooking up to
the group. His daughter was the new owner of a '72 Bronco, she had
never wheel'd before and wanted to try. We aired down and left for
the creek area about 9:00. When we got to the creek there was not
much water flowing, it surprised me, I geuss I forgot it was summer.
We started up the creek with some taking the safer road route and
some going straight up the wash. Kevin was pulling up the rear and
ran into a big boulder in the center of the creek. He told me he had
damaged his tie rod ends, I am sorry now I didn't pay more attention
to the damage. We continued up the creek and the took a left up one
of the attributary washes. This started the hill climb section; there
were a few minor problems getting up some of the hills but, nothing a
little momentum didn't cure.
We got up to what I thought was the top and made a left at the "T"
and started heading back down hill. This should have been my que that
we didn't go far enough west-south. We got back down to the creek and
it was still upper Sycamore. We stopped to make sure everybody came
down the hill okay and after about 5 minutes of waiting for the last
Jeep, Michael at this time, there was no sign of him. We tried to
call him on the radio and with no answer, I decided to go back up and
look for him.
Upon driving back up, I found him hung up on a rock against the
frame. I got out the Highlift so we could get something under the
tires, and believe it or not, there was only one lose rock lying
around. We kicked some sand and little rocks under the front and used
the big rock under the rear and he drove off. We also noticed that
there was no radio communication from where he was stuck and where we
had stopped to wait.
We drove back to the group, kicked the sand around a bit and then
headed back for the highway, it was about noon. Some went to the
station at Fort McDowell to air up and the rest of us aired up before
the highway.
On the way back down the highway, before Fort McDowell, I came upon
Kevin driving at 35MPH. I turned on the flashers and got on the radio
to him. The tie rods that he had damaged were so bad he couldn't go
over 35MPH without some violent shaking. (I must stop here and
apologize for not being prepared for this and also not realizing that
he had to drive all the way to El Mirage like this). Anyway, he said
it would be okay and he would make it home, it was a good thing he
could use his AC.
I had fun I hope you all did and I hope to see you on the trail again.

Rear: Dana 44 (w/Trac-Lok and 3.73 gears)
Front: not sure if it's a 30 or 35c
4" Trailmaster lift

15x8 American Racing Python wheels (2 shiny, 2 not)
Trailmaster Steering Stabilizer
pre-runner and 2" receiver bumper from fly-n-hi
nerf bars
front tow-hooks
I look forward to running some of the trails with the AZVJC. Sounds
like just the group I've been looking for! I know there's a few mods
I need before I'm ready to participate in an organized run (rear tow
hooks and a full size spare for starters), but now that I found a

This is the club you have been looking for. Welcome
Looks like you have a capable rig.
You just need the spare. Flats can happen anywhere. (recommendation)
If you want instead of tow hooks you could put a clevis/shackle in the rear
receiver. Just a thought.
See you on the trail.

Yea yeah yeah I hear ya :) don't poke too much you gotta get those d44's
from somewhere :) BTW last night I was on Mill ave. (ugh trendy city!) and
saw a greenish YJ w/ the sticker on it.

Discount?? Did I hear Discount?? :) how do we prove we are members? The
stickers? Not to sound too jerky and ready to jump on this one but it helps
to know :) Also I read of a clean up run. Anyone know if there is another in
the near future? I think it would be a good way to get to know people face
to face.

Subject: RE: [TR] Sycamore Creek - Saturday, June 9, 2001
