I had the same problem with the same CB. I can hear people, but it
squeals and comes through my stereo speakers when I try and talk, and
no one else could understand me.
I tossed it, went and bought a good Cobra, have had zero problems
since then, and it is much clearer. I don't know enough about CBs to
do any troubleshooting, others here can do that. All I know is I
bought a cheap one, it didn't work; I bought a more expensive
(better) one and it worked.

Take radio to a CB shop CB Exchange in Mesa does it, and have it peaked to put out as many watts as possible should be capable of getting at least 10 watts. They will check modulation that is as important as the aerial and the SWR reading. Lastly get a Turner Road King 50 Mic, this is a noise cancelling mic that most truck drivers use. It takes all engine and background noise out. cost around $39.00.
Good luck Greg

SWR is standing wave ratio and it is imortant to get as low as possible somewhere below 1.5. Do not buy hand held it will not put out the watts that a mounted radio will.It is frustrating to hear and not be heard. It could make the difference in a emergency situation. You will other arguments I'm sure about handhelds, get as much info as possible and make your own decision. Call a CB shop and just ask them which radio will get out further handheld or dash one.

No need to rematch everytime. By the way it is matched to your vehicle not your radio. So once matched you can switch radio's.

Subject: Why a high SWR ruins CBs... was; RE: Re: CB STUFF
Here's a short explanation of why a large SWR ruins CB Radios.
In brief terms, your CB radio puts out a voltage which travels over the coax
cable to the antenna... if the impedance (kinda like resistance) of the
cable and antenna don't match the impedance of the output drivers in your
radio; some of the voltage (signal) from the CB reflects back from the
antenna, along the coax cable, and hits the output drivers in your CB. When
this happens, you are transmitting less signal (because some is being
bounced back to the output of your radio) and you are potentially damaging
the output drivers in your CB. This is bad news all around.
When you tune your antenna using an SWR meter, you are matching the
impedance of the antenna to that of the coax cable and the output drivers in
your CB. A ratio of 1 to 1 is perfection since it indicates that no signal
is being reflected back into the CB and all of it is being transmitted to
the outside world via the antenna.
This is not a robust explanation, but is sufficient for the purposes of this
discussion.
Kind Regards,

FYI, a SWR meter does not adjust your SWR's.
It is a measuring devise only. You can turn the knob on it to give
virtualy any reading you want.
To adjust(change) the SWR'S you need to add/subtract coax, or
add/subtract the lenght of the anttena.

One would almost have to be standing on my hard top to be hit by mine,
assuming I even have it in the extended position. (much of the time I fold
it over and teather it at a 2nd point. There can always be exceptions to
any rule, but a spotter around my vehicle would most likely be ran over
first before he/she is hit by the antenna [insert big grin].
That being said, I wheeled for a full week with an Idaho friend a few months
back. Even with his 10' whip attached to a spring mount, it never came
close to hitting a spotter (usually myself or my wife). I usually spot from
a safe distance in front of the vehicle....much farther than a whipping
antenna could possibly reach. As to the safety of by standers who may be
observing, if they are close enough to be hit by the 10' antenna, they are
too close to the vehicle period. Roll overs, exploding u-joints, flying
rocks, etc. all present a clear danger to anyone standing along the side
lines. They too need to keep a safe distance. I've not met too many
observers who ever win when confronted with fast flying metal, rocks, or big
heavy JEEPs! ;)
I have heard that some events and/or clubs do not allow these types of
antennas due to the "dangerous" nature of them. I'm sure that some
bystander(s) was injured by one. So, we attempt to legislate against such
things (stupidity?) and the result is what we have today. So, we end up

Go get a couple of cans (5.00 each) and a gauge setup... and do it yourself.
The instructions are on the package for the gauges and it really is simple.
You can even put some leak detect in and look for the dye to see if you have
a leak.
This is definitely one task that ANYONE can do themselves.... don't go and

Subject: [TR] Lake Pleasant to Crown King - Saturday, June 16, 2001
Hello All,
Craig Corbin is leading a Lake Pleasant to Crown King trail run on Saturday, June 16, 2001.
When: 8:30-8:45am, head out right at 9am
Where: Meet at the gas station at the intersection of I-17 and Carefree highway (SW corner)
Rating: 3.0
Length:
CB Channel: 22
This is a run hosted by the Intel Desert Dwellers. All are invited. Make sure you bring all the necessary equipment, water, food, sunblock, etc. It is a long run, be prepared.
The Lake Pleasang to Crown King trail is a local favorite. On any given weekend, there will be numerous groups of four wheelers, ATV's and motorcycles heading to and from Crown King.
The trail takes off from the Castle Hotsprings Rd and travels through the foot hills and up the side of the mountain, giving nice views of Lake Pleasant and the Valley. There are some tougher optional sections that can make it interesting.
The trail goes through the old ghost towns of Fort Misery and Oro Belle, both of which are remnants of the Mining era of the Bradshaw Mountains. All that remains now, are foundations and a few crumbling walls. Fort Misery makes a nice place to stop and eat lunch as the small creek usually has running water and there are trees to provide shade.
In the winter months, the trail from Fort Misery through Oro Belle to Crown King will often have snow and/or ice. In the summer, an early start is necessary to stay ahead of the rising temperatures.
Once on top of the mountain, the trail runs through the cool pines and into Crown King. In Crown King there are places to eat and have a drink, and a general store that sells some excellent fudge.
There are campgrounds on top of the mountain near Crown King for those wishing to stay overnight. The fastest way down is via the main road which leads through Cleator and toward Bumble Bee. You can split off and go through Cordes Junction, which will get you to the Freeway quicker, or keep going strait and go through the little town of Bumble Bee.
Alternatively, you can take the Senator Highway toward Prescott or Mayer, this can be a very interesting trail during snow season. If you have the time, follow Towers Mountain rd through Crown King and up to the top of Towers Mountain, there are some excellent views and you can join back up with the Senator Highway afterward.
Have fun, remember to bring water and your camera.
Enjoy, and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Subject: RE: CB STUFF
Fred,
Longer is better as long as it is the proper length. Most mobile antennas
(at least for the CB world) are designed around an antenna style called the
quarter wave ground plane. The active antenna is phsically one quarter of
the operating wavelength long. For a CB radio, this is about 102" or there
abouts, if memory serves me correctly. The 3' and 4' antennas we commonly
used are called a helically wound vertical. This is also based on a
quarter wave vertical design.
The full length quarter wave vertical will outperform a shorter helically
wound vertical. So you will get better performance. Given the nature of CB
wavefront propagation, that may or may not result in better range in the
immediate area. However, the majority of the time, it should improve the
signal strength. As the design of the antenna changes (between a full
length quarter wave and a helically wound couterpart), the angle at which
the wavefront leaves the antenna changes. When the angle is too steep, most
of the signal is directed up into the ionsphere, and results in long range
skip if it is reflected back. The point is that less of the signal travels
out along the surface of the ground which is what is needed to short range
communcations.
If you have trouble sleeping at night and don't want to take drugs to get to
spleep,I can provide you with a few book titles that deal with RF
propagation and antenna radiation patterns. LOL!

mine would do with a "long" antenna. I have a Cobra 75SX, or whatever

literally, miles, if I'm not in a tight canyon or anything like that..

squeals and comes through my stereo speakers when I try and talk, and
no one else could understand me.

This is not a robust explanation, but is sufficient for the purposes of this
discussion.
Kind Regards,
Joe West

FYI, a SWR meter does not adjust your SWR's.
It is a measuring devise only. You can turn the knob on it to give
virtualy any reading you want.
To adjust(change) the SWR'S you need to add/subtract coax, or
add/subtract the lenght of the anttena.

Just my opinion, but the Firestik website also has a LOT of BS as well.
Remember, they are in the business to sell you their product.
I don't want to sell you anything....but I have been in the
electronics/communications business for over 25 years and made my living off
of it for better than half of that time. I am not claiming to know
everyhting....not by any means what so ever.....but some of the crap that is
on the Firestik site is 100% road apples.
This is not meant as a flame at anyone (especially Brent). Firestik makes a
good antenna product....its just their FAQ leaves a bit to be desired. ;)

Some of us that have the longer antennas do teather them to our vehicle.
So, we end up
with 3 or 4' long antennas and then complain about short range
communications. OK, rant mode off.

Kevin,
Go get a couple of cans (5.00 each) and a gauge setup... and do it yourself.
The instructions are on the package for the gauges and it really is simple.
You can even put some leak detect in and look for the dye to see if you have
a leak.
This is definitely one task that ANYONE can do themselves.... don't go and
pay someone else.

LOL!

Don't worry about the "non-Jeep" thing. A lot of us that drive older rigs
would have to search pretty hard to find a piece of original, un-modified
