Subject: ?'s on buying a used XJ
Well, it's been 3 days and I guess I'm going to have
to face the cold hard truth that I probably won't see
my jeep again. I've been thinking about an XJ as an
alternate vehicle for awhile now and figure I'll start
there and then find a CJ or YJ to rebuild later.
I'd like to get an I6 so I guess I shouldn't go any
older than an '87. My questions are:
Do all the 4.0L's have fuel injection?
How can I (or can I at all) tell if it has a Dana 44
Rear by the VIN? (I read that some with tow pkgs came
with the 44 instead of the standard 35c).
Any particular items I should be aware/wary of?
I'm headed to Texas week after next to see the family
and figured I'd look around, as there isn't much
chance they would be used for much offroad in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area (figure on alot of freeway
miles though).
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
TIA,

You do drive like an old man. I've seen you. :)
If you are doing ANY kind of stressful driving, heavy foot or not,
your axles will eventually get weaker and break, usually when you
least expect it. If you plan on running 33's and/or a locker, but
can't afford replacing your entire axle, go with some Moser chromoly
axles. They are ALOT stronger, and will give you the piece of mind
for under $300. Even if these break under stress, you still have
your stock ones for spares. Just my $.02

Very cool! Flag 4x4 has done a good bit of work on my CJ. (axles,

Brent,
The site you mention does have a good price the radio. I was just
noticing though, they sell the box for $21, this means (minus the
antenna) a CB in another vehicle would only cost $21 (as long as you
didn't want to use both at once).
I mounted my box underneath the driver's seat, I know Dan S. mounted
his under the passenger's seat. I never pull the driver's seat
forward so I figured this would be a safe place. The other thing I
did was use covered spade connectors for the +/-, so to get he box
out it is two screws, the antenna plug & unplug the power connectors.
I'm hoping this will be my last CB I will have to buy.

Yeah,
$21 ain't bad for a "new CB"...
FWIW, I've got my box installed under my center console towards the
front. It's real easy to access and when I take it out, I can just
stuff the cable back in the hole at the front of the console and no
one even knows it's there. To install it, all I had to do was pop off
the shift lever boot (I've got a 5 spd) and find a place to drill a
couple small holes.

Yes all 4.0L have fuel injection but 87-90 used renix & 91+ use Chrysler.
Dana 44's are rather rare & only in the late 80's models. If you see a badge
on the back that says "one metric ton" it has/had a Dana 44. Some newer XJ's
also use the 8-1/4 rear axle which is a bit stronger than the 35. Look for
XJ's without ABS to find those. If you can get one with either the towing or
off road package you get the heavy duty radiator & 91+ have an improved
cooling system. You'll find most are automatics but the AW4 is an awesome
transmission.

I guess I ought to put my 0.02cents in here and risk being flammed. Doesn't the
TJ have 297 front u-joints to begin with???? I thought it did. I've seen
NUMEROUS people run 35" tires with a D30 with the old smaller u-joints with
"decent" results. I'm certainly not going to sit here and say that they didn't
break u-joints....they did!!! One guy in particular on this list ran his with a
6 cylinder, 35" tires, in a CJ7 with 4.56's and a manual for a long time. He
only went through 2 u-joints in about 3-4 years. He had run everything out in
Florence Junction area including Highway to Hell and the such. Only 2 ujoints!
And those were the smaller u-joints.
My opinion is that his 4 banger and 33Xwhatever is going to be fine. Yes, he
will stress them and should carry spares. But the power he will be putting into
that with the 4 banger is minimal compared to the larger 6 cylinders. My
OPINION...........run the 33X15.50X15, and help your buddies when they cut
sidewalls in their tires while yours are still asking for more!
Ok.........please don't flame me......but my delete button works pretty well!

Hello All,
I've been adding a couple of things to the website.
In the Trails Section, I changed the behavior of the search/list
screen to limit the "Begins with" filter to single letters. This is
to aid in loading the pages faster. (I will be doing the same thing
to Members later) Also is a new "Submit Trail" feature that will
allow you to fill out a form and it will e-mail me the details of the
trail so I can add it to the website.
For Trips, if you are a trip leader, you can choose to "Send a
Reminder" to the group. This is done where you view trip information.
On Trails and Trips pages, links to members' info will likely be
broken until I upload the new member's pages when they are ready.
Thanks,
- Mike

Hello All,
Mike Chatfield is leading a South End White Tanks Area trail run on Saturday, June 16, 2001.
When: 7am
Where: Loves Truckstop (Just South of I-10 on Miller Rd)
Rating: 2.0+
Length: 4 - 6 hrs depending on the heat
CB Channel: 4
Plan on taking a few "new" wheelers out, get their wheels dirty on some easier trails. Will likely not see anything more difficult than 3.0. Though we will likely take a look at Monster Hill.
The South end of the White Tanks has a variety of trails for exploration. Cutting through the top is an old powerline trail that goes from the old Catapillar test track all the way out to the Hassayampa Riverbed.
There are also numerous washes to explore, the furthure up the washes you go the tougher they get. There are a variety of side trails and hill climbs to try as well as a large hill of sand left over from when they were building I-10.
Some of the Named Trails in the area include:
Appetizer
Firebird
Tax Collector

There are a couple of custom fuel tank (cell) builders in the PHX area.
It will be a transfer tank unless you plan on replacing the existing

Brent,
The site you mention does have a good price the radio. I was just
noticing though, they sell the box for $21, this means (minus the
antenna) a CB in another vehicle would only cost $21 (as long as you
didn't want to use both at once).

I just picked up a 98 and it came with a 3.55 axle ratio,Dana 30
front and a 8.25 rear axle which is supposedly a little weaker than
the 44. Look for the up country suspension gives you a little lift to
start, and skid plates. Email me and I can send you the build sheet
and try this link for XJs I,m still a TJ guy but learning more about

I am in the process of swapping a rear axle into my 78 CJ7, and am considering changing my current setup to a SOA (front and rear) since I will have to weld on new spring perches to the new axle. Can anyone send me some info regarding the SOA process? I am wondering what areas I need to look out for (steering issues, driveline issues), and any advice from your previous experiences.

Yeah,
$21 ain't bad for a "new CB"...

Subject: [az_vjc] ?'s on buying a used XJ
TIA,

Subject: Re: Tire Question, Need Help...

Subject: Website Changes
Hello All,
I've been adding a couple of things to the website.
Thanks,
- Mike

work out a time this weekend.

Hello All,
Mike Chatfield is leading a South End White Tanks Area trail run on Saturday, June 16, 2001.

It will be a transfer tank unless you plan on replacing the existing
