Subject: [az_vjc] Yet Another York Onboard
I acquired my York compressor about 4 months ago. I finally ordered
up a tank last week and got everything installed this weekend.
I just got the pictures uploaded onto the net. They're in no
particular order, just taken through various stages during the
install. There are more at the root of the the on_board_air directory
(along with some other knick knack stuff):
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000196.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000198.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000203.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000205.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000207.JPG
Rear Bumper:
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000213.JPG
I wanted to keep the clutter under the hood to a minimum. So, I
copied an install I had seen on the net somewhere before and strapped
the tank up under the hood. I fabbed up a bracket (consisted of
chopping a 2" steel strap to 16" in length and drilling two holes in
it) and bolted it to the "frame" of the hood. I then used three pipe
clamps to strap the compressor to the hood. The bracket I made was
needed so that I had something to clamp the tank to. I also mounted
the pressure switch inside the cab, under the dash, in front of the
center console (there's a LOT of space up in there). I didn't take
any pictures, but the master switch and a pressure gague are going to
be installed on the center console, near the transfer case shift
lever.
One of the lines goes from the tank, under the Jeep, along the
driver's side and to the rear bumper. So, I have a quick disco at the
rear end and one up by the front, near the windshield washer resevoir.
It took a little extra work to figure out how to get everything to
fold up neat and nice when the hood is closed. But, the hood closes
without anything rubbing or pulling out any important hoses from the
engine compartment.
The installation was fairly easy. The hard part about the whole
project is acquiring all the necessarry fittings and parts. I made
quite a few trips up to ACE Hardware to get everything I needed (even
after I drew up a diagram and listed all the parts I thought I'd
need).
I'm very surprised at how fast that little compressor pressurizes the
tank, even at idle. And once some RPM's are added, it pressurizes
even quicker. Air tools seem to run fine too and the compressor seems
to be able to re-pressurize the system pretty quickly after the
pressure switch kicks in.
My next planned "mod" is to document everything I've done to my Jeep
and have a complete write up. When I get that done, I'll be sure and
post a link! :)
This project is definitely worth the effort. I must have aired down
my tires and pumped them up three times already. I can't wait to try
it out at the end of a trail instead of in my driveway for once.

Not positive of the GM operation, but the jeep unit will switch from
~6V to ~0V (or vice versa) when it catches a trigger pulse. I think
there are three groups of teeth on the flywheel, 4 teeth in each group,
each group 120* apart. I'd figure the v8 has 4 groups of teeth every
90*.

Once again I am going to ask about a topic that has already been discussed in some detail on here in the recent past. Believe it or not my wife wants to buy me a GPS for my birthday this week. I was hoping to get some suggestions on brand, model, features, dealers, price etc for a handheld GPS unit. Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Results from the Suggestions for getting new tires.
Everyone,
Thanks for the input. I have settled on 5 New Goodyear MT/Rs and white Wagon wheels from Discount Tire at 4455 Bell Rd. Rick Beer gave me a great deal (Thanks Stu). PLUS Rick helped me out on a loaner spare while I wait for them to come in so I can be on the trail this weekend.
What I have learned from everyone's input is that everyone agrees with everyone on tire choices. As for where to get them...
Some consider service to be the deciding factor especially when people are on the clock and others consider availability to be tops. Big O and Discount warranty service is about the same. No one commented on any independent dealers. IF I HAD to decide I would say Big O had better comments from you but mostly the comments were the same for both.
The best reviews went to the Goodyear MT/R tires. Apparently the side wall protection is one of the best in the industry (according to AZVJC members). The other brands Big Os and BFG, some have had good experiences others not so good. Some have the Pro Comps but did not comments on there reliability. All the tires received good review for ride, handling and quietness.
Bottom line. I chose quality of the tire to be the deciding factor for the tire. The Wagon wheels were decided a long time ago when the Jeep was painted white at the dealer. As to where to get them, I chose Discount on Bell mostly because it is the closer store frequented by quite a few of you. Rick rattled off several familiar names that have gotten tires there in the past. Plus it was kind of cool pulling in and seeing 5 or 6 other Jeeps in the lot. I could have went back to Big O less then half a mile from my house but I do not like to haggle. I think Rick Beer at Discount gave me an excellent fair deal right up front.
Now as for wheel locks. You know the story about opinions, "everybody's got one". It seems most of you, if not all, do not have wheel locks. You either don't want to take the extra time on the trail it takes to change a flat or you believe if a thief is going to steal the tires he is going to steel them. Another reason is you have deterred the thief with chipped wheels and or rims OR have given them a repulsive odor. For the one or two that do have locks, it is because it is believed a thief will not take the extra time to break the lock and would rather take the low rider wheels in the parking spot near you. I have to say, that if a thief wants your tires he/she will probably find it easier to take the whole Jeep then to mess with a tire iron. My advice is to at least have a lock for your spare (unless it is in the back of your XJ or ZJ).
Anyway sorry for ramblin'. I hope someone finds this good readin' and helpful. This is just my opinion from what I received either from the public forum or privately in my email.
My... oh I'd say about .10 cents worth.

All/Anyone
I am looking at getting some new shoes for the Jeep. White Wagon Wheels and Mud Terrains. 33x12.50R15.
Big O quoted me around $1,200 for a set of 5 Big O MT's. That includes road hazard, balancing, stems etc. and a set of wheel locks.
Changing a sliced Big O tire no questions and no money.
Or should I go with the BFG MT's for about $170 dollars more. (With same warranty).
The difference being I will have to buy a new warranty every flat.
Anyone got some suggestions or a better deal?

Joey: You got some pretty solid input on tire choice. Glad you made
use of it. The MT/R is a great tire. I ran them in 33 before I went up
in size. I now run 36 SX, but when the 37-inch MT/R becomes affordable
I may go that route again. It's a tough tire that rides well and
balances nicely. Doesn't quite grab like a bias-ply Swamper, but for a
radial, it's arguably the best tire out there.
