I agree with everyone also, I got new XTs from BigO
about 2 months and I love them. They're not very loud
on the street at all, and they are great off road and
with that warranty they can't be beat. Not to mention
the life tread of 40,000 miles is not bad at all.

The major differnce is that one lifts the frame (and thus everything
attached to it) while the other only lifts the body.
When you lift your frame, other things can be affected....shocks, steering,
alignment, drive shaft angles, etc. Granted, a 3/4" spacer lift shouldn't
cause much of a probelm....maybe vibes, maybe not. A spacer lift will raise
your center of gravity more than will a body lift, since more things go
higher.
The 1" body lift....about all you have to worry about is the fan shroud and
maybe t-case shift linkage. Some folks find they need to cut a little of
the tub away around the tranny shifter....sometimes it makes contact with
the metal and won't let you get into gear (usually 2 and/or 4th).
Others probably have some other ideas.

I drive a 76 CJ7 with a 304 and a AMC Turbo 400 trans. It came with dealer installed A/C. As I understand it, the equipment was factory supplied to the dealer but it was installed at the dealer. All CJ7 models with the quadratrac Tcase had a 304 / 400 combo. If you get stuck with a quadracrap Tcase you can do what I did and put in a conversion kit that makes it 2wd or 4wd.
Easy way to tell is an offset rear differential.

I maintain 6 vehicles for my business, all are shod with big-O AT tires. I
drive a 97 grand with 33x12.5 XT tires. These are between the AT and MT. The
MT will get you 30k miles. XT 50k and AT almost 70k.
I also drive a CJ with BFG MT 32x11.5 tires. I really don't have a
preference when it comes to comparing the two styles. They have comparable
wear and noise, the most noticable difference is the tread pattern.
What makes the difference to me is service. When one of my guys slashes a
tire on the mountain (we do tower work) they drop it off and it is either
fixed or replaced at no cost in under 20 minutes. This means more money in
my pocket and workers that do not have to spend an hours waiting to get a
flat fixed.
I tried working with discount in the past. Yes they have hazard warranties,
extra. Yes they will replace a tire if it is slashed, at a prorated cost.
Yes they sell lots of tires. However, when I can't get in and out within an
hour at the three different locations that are reasonably close it means
they have lost a customer.
Bottom line, BigO MT tires are way soft. XT is a good all around as is the
BFG MT, but the service does it for me.

Just a note about the Big-O warranty. In January, I hit a piece of road
debris with my econobox commuter with Big-O tires. At the time I was doing
80 on the 101 loop, and as soon as I hit it, I started to move to the right,
anticipating a problem. The tire went flat and started to rumble in about a
mile. When it started making noise, I was at an exit, so I immediately
exited and pulled over on the shoulder to change the tire. When I went to
the Big O dealer in Glendale to get a replacement tire, they told me that
they could see that the tire had been run flat and therefore they couldn't
warranty it. I basically got a blank stare when I asked if I was supposed
to stop in the fast lane of the 101 to change it so as not to void the
warranty. After a few phone calls and letters to the Big O corporate
headquarters, all I seem to get is that each Big O dealer is an independent
business and Big O corporate can't help. I once was a solid Big O
supporter, but from now on, all of my tire money goes to Discount Tire, I
have never heard of them coming up with such a BS excuse to get out of
honoring a road hazard warranty.
Off my soapbox now

Subject: Re: New KJ
Was messing around on Saturday and stopped in at Jim Click here
in Tucson. Took the Liberty for a test drive.
The one I drove was a Limited, think it was the "F" package with
power mirrors and the off road package as options. Had the NV231
T-case and Trac-Loc rear differential, 3.7L V6, 235/70/16 tires.
Nice fit and finish on the interior, control placement seems
about right and seating position is comfortable. Visibility is
very good. The 3.7L V6 seems pretty peppy and revs smoothly. When
accelerating moderately hard it shifted at about 5500 and got
moving along nicely. Pulled out of the lot with a salesguy in the
passenger seat. Asked him if anyone had had one off-road. He said
he didn't know and this was the first time he had even been in
one. It had 160 miles on the clock. I asked where we could try it
out off-road and he directed me to some dirt piles on the other
side of the block from the dealership. The piles had been piled
up by a rubber tired loader and were about 10 feet tall. They had
been driven over quite a bit and most of the tracks had a very
sharp break-over on the top. There was one track over that had a
little twisty section also. Put it in low range and drove around
for a few minutes. Flex is better than a stock YJ (not saying too
much I know) but could easily twist it up till it was stopped,
parking brake would lock the rear diff and get it moving again.
Approach and departure angles are good, didn't drag either of the
bumpers anyway. These piles were very sharp on top with steep
slopes going up and down. Had no problem driving up but didn't
want to scrape the bottom up for them so stopped at the top when
the center touched the ground. Low range is reasonable and tire
spin easily controlled with the throttle.
My rating?
Nice little truck, good layout for the interior, appears solidly
built. Personally, I like the looks and the stance is not what
you would expect from looking at pictures, it is up off the
ground pretty good. Off-road it should be better than most of the
other similar small sport utes. Having a transfer case sets it
way above any comparable vehicle by other manufacturers.
I understand that Rusty of Rusty's Offroad is working on a 3 inch
lift...heheh.
My wife is wanting one, then I get the ZJ as a hand-me-down. :)

wait to hit some trails. Noticeable? Absolutely! One thing that I
found that was very cool, however, was the nearly transparent action

I am thinkin' it is high too. Especially for Big O house brand tires.
Actually in the quote there are a couple of items that add to the price but
not significantly.
Big O
Big Foot MT 33x12.50R15 177.99 (too high) each w/warranty. The white wagon
wheels are 35.00 (acceptable but on the high side) each. labor is 17.50
total.
Goodyear Auto Service Center
Wrangle MT/R 33x12.50R15 170.00 each w/out warrenty. Warranty 22.74 each
tire. same wheels 34.99. Oh and add 10.73 labor each tire (unacceptablly
high) NOTE: quality tire.
Discount
Have not got there yet.
I would add that the wheel locks are a necessary evil for piece of mind.
Those added seconds and fumbling by a would be thief could be the difference
between tires or no tires.
I definitly will be shopping for a better deal.

You might want to give RICK BEER [RIKNAZ@m...] an e-mail.....he is a VJC
member too. He works at the Discount Tire up on Bell Road on the west side
of town.
He got me great pricing on my 35" MT/Rs (significantly less than the 33" B/O
tires referenced below).

Subject: Yet Another York Onboard
I acquired my York compressor about 4 months ago. I finally ordered
up a tank last week and got everything installed this weekend.
I just got the pictures uploaded onto the net. They're in no
particular order, just taken through various stages during the
install. There are more at the root of the the on_board_air directory
(along with some other knick knack stuff):
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000196.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000198.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000203.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000205.JPG
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000207.JPG
Rear Bumper:
http://www.losvatoslocos.org/on_board_air/P0000213.JPG
I wanted to keep the clutter under the hood to a minimum. So, I
copied an install I had seen on the net somewhere before and strapped
the tank up under the hood. I fabbed up a bracket (consisted of
chopping a 2" steel strap to 16" in length and drilling two holes in
it) and bolted it to the "frame" of the hood. I then used three pipe
clamps to strap the compressor to the hood. The bracket I made was
needed so that I had something to clamp the tank to. I also mounted
the pressure switch inside the cab, under the dash, in front of the
center console (there's a LOT of space up in there). I didn't take
any pictures, but the master switch and a pressure gague are going to
be installed on the center console, near the transfer case shift
lever.
One of the lines goes from the tank, under the Jeep, along the
driver's side and to the rear bumper. So, I have a quick disco at the
rear end and one up by the front, near the windshield washer resevoir.
It took a little extra work to figure out how to get everything to
fold up neat and nice when the hood is closed. But, the hood closes
without anything rubbing or pulling out any important hoses from the
engine compartment.
The installation was fairly easy. The hard part about the whole
project is acquiring all the necessarry fittings and parts. I made
quite a few trips up to ACE Hardware to get everything I needed (even
after I drew up a diagram and listed all the parts I thought I'd
need).
I'm very surprised at how fast that little compressor pressurizes the
tank, even at idle. And once some RPM's are added, it pressurizes
even quicker. Air tools seem to run fine too and the compressor seems
to be able to re-pressurize the system pretty quickly after the
pressure switch kicks in.
My next planned "mod" is to document everything I've done to my Jeep
and have a complete write up. When I get that done, I'll be sure and
post a link! :)
This project is definitely worth the effort. I must have aired down
my tires and pumped them up three times already. I can't wait to try
it out at the end of a trail instead of in my driveway for once.

Joey,
I had Big O's before and they do have the best road hazard. Unfortunately the sidewalls are very thin and you will be using that warranty quite frequently. I went through 3 replacements in about 12 trips out before I bought the 35" Goodyear MT/R's. I punish my MT/R's a whole lot more than the Big O's ever were and I have yet to have a failure on the trail in a year.
Do yourself a favor and check out the pricing on the MT/R's. They are hands down better on the trail than the BFG's or Big O's. I also had BFG's at one time and ran them for 4 years on a YJ I used to own. They are also quieter than either of the other two. You can get them at Discount, Sears, or Gemini with road hazard.

Changing a sliced Big O tire no questions and no money.
Or should I go with the BFG MT's for about $170 dollars more. (With same warranty).
The difference being I will have to buy a new warranty every flat.
Anyone got some suggestions or a better deal?

I went through 4 33x9.50 MTs in a year. I have never sliced the
285/75r16 MTs (which are slightly wider than the 9.50s). So go figure.
Don't waste your time on the wheel locks. I bought a set for my
expensive Al alloy wheels and all they did was get in the way. If you
want wheel locks you can have my old set. I think I still have them.

I put my No-Slip in the rear diff this afternoon, so I'm ready
to hit some dirt! I took it over to the nearest construction staging
area and crawled onto the giant rock pile there. I still had the
front swaybar hooked up, but I could already tell there was a HUGE
difference! I have never driven a locked rig before, and I can't
wait to hit some trails. Noticeable? Absolutely! One thing that I
found that was very cool, however, was the nearly transparent action
on the pavement. Very nice diff. Installed in under and hour, and
this was my first attempt at anything like this.
So where are we going this weekend???

I'd be more concerned with that price! $1200 for those tires and
wheels.... Am I the only one thinking thats way high?
I agree with Linda, dont waste your time on wheel locks... the only
one they make it difficult for to remove a wheel is you.

You should definitely look into tires from
4WheelPartsWholesalers. I got my tires there, and recommend them.
There prices are WAY better than the one you quoted. $1200 for steel
wheels and only 33" tires? Good God! I hope that comes with 6
months of free gasoline!!!

Scott,
Thanks for completing the trip report. Glad to hear no one got hurt in
the tip over. I spent the last week and a half working on the old ZJ and
finally got it back on all 4 tires Friday night. I spent Saturday
morning racing around town getting ready for the trip. I was pretty
tired when we started the trail. By the time we got to Lower Tax
Collector I was ready to take a nap!
I'd like to thank everyone who came out for the trail ride. I hope
everyone had a good time. I want to thank Jannelle and Chris for taking
pictures.
Next year's trail ride will be either west in the White Tanks or up near
Lake Pleasant. I'll keep it a club run next year. I won't let State
Parks advertise again! The PRs they sent out were shredded by the EV
Trib and Az Repulsive editors.

He got me great pricing on my 35" MT/Rs (significantly less than the 33" B/O
tires referenced below).
