I was just curious all of you jeep historians. Did jeep ever sell a 304 with an automatic transmission. I was also wondering if they sold a 304 with factory AC. I know that someone out there knows the answer to this and I would appreciate it if they would pass it along to me.

Don't know why the torque arm bolt/nut would hang 2" below the cross
member. Mine hangs down only by the thickness of the nut. I'd say
cut the bolt shorter.

Yes they did. I just replaced a 304 in a jeep that had a automatic. Also the Wagoner's came with autos connected to both 304 and 360s.

The same applies to the axles and I'd be more concerned about the front
axle u-joints (assuming a CJ Dana 30) than the driveshafts. Of course,
I'm not that familiar with CJ driveshafts.

test driven one? We are going to trade in the Tahoe for something else,

She already said she wants the Grand Cherokee, but now that the Liberty is
out, she likes the look of it. I went to Earnhardts last week for a

look alot bettar in person than all of the pictures I have seen.

I have a 78 CJ7 that came stock from the factory with the 304 V8 mated to the GM Turbo 400 auto tranny. This combo was used in CJ7's with quadratrac (*quadrajunk!) and also in wagoneers with qt or the Dana 20 transfercase. My Jeep has had the 304 swapped out for the 360 V8, and I am now in the process of changing out the Quadrajunk for the Dana 20 transfercase--gear driven, not chaindriven like the qt = stronger unit...

From what I know the torque arm mount is supposed to be loose. It doesn't have to rattle though! mIne is damn tight right now, tweaked and bent into the skidplate... I think the torque one is meant to be there to stop side to side movement. I've never seen custom motor and tranny mounts for the YJ before. I think I will consider them next time I replace my mounts. I've replaced all my mounts twice in about 2 and half years.

All/Anyone
I am looking at getting some new shoes for the Jeep. White Wagon Wheels and Mud Terrains. 33x12.50R15.
Big O quoted me around $1,200 for a set of 5 Big O MT's. That includes road hazard, balancing, stems etc. and a set of wheel locks.
Changing a sliced Big O tire no questions and no money.

Or should I go with the BFG MT's for about $170 dollars more. (With same warranty).
The difference being I will have to buy a new warranty every flat.

Anyone got some suggestions or a better deal?

I've been running Wrangler MT/R's in the 32" for about 6 months on my XJ. Previously I was using BFG AT's and got a flat at least once a month. Since going to the MT/R's I have had no flats at all. I have also been running harder trails than I used to.

I have "burped" the right rear tire twice, with no ill effects. The last time, I was sure it went flat, but it didn't. I did have to get one of them replaced due to a large cut in the sidewall, all the way to the core. The Goodyear shop replaced it with no questions asked, although I did have to buy a new warranty.

I also know of a friend with an XJ that gets quite a few flats with his Big O MT's. He gets them replaced for nothing. I guess it depends on how you look at it.

Personally, I think spares are overrated. Lets say you get a flat halfway through Lower Terminator. Now what?? You have no spare. You better be careful.

I would rather use a tough tire that I can depend on. Plus, the MT/R's ride great on the street. I say spend the extra $170. You'll be happy. Just my .02

better then Big-O... If you want the lifetime replace like the Big-O
buy them at Discount they have a lifetime for any tire they sell...
balance rotate and road hazard. Never had a problem at Discount

I replaced the stock mounts with the poly ones a while ago they work great but you get a little more vibration the poly is harder then the rubber. As far as the torque bolt just cut it off as short as possible.

Any of you have issue with your transmission mounts? What I mean is I do not like the way the bolts come down thru the cross member. I was just looking at a mount (http://www.mountainoffroad.com/catalog/Trans%20Mt/transmission.htm) that looks like the ideal replacement.

My biggest issue is the torque arm bushings and bolt. That bolt on mine is missing the nut so I get a constant rattle from below. I have not put a nut on there because then that bolt will be hanging 2" below the cross member waiting to get bent on a rock.

Anyone have advice or better solutions? I am thinking of just chopping the torque arm bolt and replacing the transmission mount.
