Subject: [TR} Reminder: NTD Trail Ride - White Tanks Saturday Nite

Just a reminder. I will be leading my 3rd annual National Trails Day
Trail ride in the White Tanks on Saturday evening. There are 3 trail
sections which get progressively more difficult. Appetizer (3.0), Lower
Tax Collector (3.5) then Upper Tax Collector (4.0+). The meeting place
is the Loves Truck Stop on Miller Rd and I-10 west of Phoenix at 5:30pm.
I will be raffling off NTD t-shirts and the NTD banner. I haven't
checked the front porch yet to see if Az State Parks really shipped me
more t-shirts and water bottles. All proceeds goo to the ASA4WDC Land
Use Fund. There is no entry fee for this trail ride, but donations are
accepted.

So far the turnout looks pretty small, most likely because of the heat.

If you have any questions, call me at 480-834-1171 or email me. I will
be leaving for the White Tanks around 2:00pm to check out the route and
leave markers.

Next years run will be in NW Phoenix. I will be looking for an easy to
medium trail.

Regardless of what color you use, buy a new tube. If you want to keep it
for a while it needs to be kept in a cool place. A refrigerator is best
but even just keeping in the house is better than leaving it in a hot
garage.

Following Linda's lead....

Here in Tucson, we will have a booth at the
Park Place Mall from 10-6 this Saturday.
If you are around please stop by and say "Hello" to
me and the other volunteers!
We feel pretty fortunate that we are invited as most of the
other groups represent none motorized recreation.

Please support Linda if you are up in the Phoenix
area-she works her axles off for this sport.

put back together per the instructions, and slaped it all together.
Filled the diff with fluid, and made sure all the bolts were tight. Took

felt the locker kick in, pulling in all directions when I hit the gas. I
took it out of 4 low, and drove a little, and it was still locked up. I
bakced up, pulled forward, backed up, pulled forward. I did this a lot of

Sory I forgot to say but it is the LockRight in the front. When I took it
for the initial test drive, I did not feel anthing unusuall up front.
After I put it in 4 low, I felt it, but when I put it back in 2 hi, I
could still fell it grabing up front like it was in 4 low. I have driven
with a lock right in the front of my brothers XJ, and I know what to feel
for. I also know what I should be feeling in my Jeep, and it ain't feeling
right!. Thanks for your input.

The install instruction states thrust washers should have been in my
carrier, and if they were not, go buy some because they MUST be installed.
My carrier did NOT have any thrust washers. Are they necsessary?

Not having installed any type of locker before, but have put
together a few bicycles and stuff. :)
I find that following the procedure in the assembly manual
usually will result in a bicycle that goes forward when you
peddle.
I think you found the solution to your problem already....The
instructions say that thrust washers *MUST* be installed, maybe
they *HAVE* to be installed for it to work correctly.
Just a wild guess. :)

I have a lockright in the front of my YJ and sometimes it stays
locked for days. Then it will free up and lock again. Remember that
both front tires turn the same speed alomost all of the time. so even
around corners sometimes it will stay locked. I am not sure about the
thrust washers, i am surprised that your differentila didn't have
any. Youo may want to check to make sure they weren't "glued" to the
spiders gears with diff lube. mine were and you couldn't tell they
were there. Not until I read about installing them did i check again
and find they were there.

Well if that is the case, they list a variety of different thrust
washers in the instructions. It says if you only have one, get
another one to match the factory one you have in there. Well, no
factory one was in there, so what size would I get??

okay, so working on a vehicle at 10:00 at night when you have been up
since 4:30 am is not the best thing! Someone pointed out that his thrust
washers were so tight against his old gears, he couldn't tell they were on
there. I looked at mine and found them pressed against the side of the
old ones. Good news!

Bad news, I don't have enough time to fix it today, so I can't go on the
Upper Ajax run! Boy, does this suck!!

Let me know if some of you are still planning on going, A fellow club

prob still want to go. I can tell him to meet you at Texaco in FJ at

Subject: OT maybe....car for sale....engine for project Jeep?

Hi all

I've got a vehicle for sale that I'm tired of messing with. It could be
fixed up and used as a daily driver, or it could be used as a parts donor
for someone who is building (or wants to build) a Jeep with a 3.8 Buick V6.

Here's the scoop:

1988 Buick Century wagon
3.8 multi-port injected V6
4 speed o/d automatic tranny
4 door
power everything....windows, seats, etc....all works
air conditioning works
no body damage
silver paint starting to peel
new water pump (today)
new power steering pump (today)
new timing chain (last month)
new radiator fan motor (2 months ago)
all injectors replaced last summer

Here's the bad part: it has a knock somewhere in the engine compartment
that I can't find. I thought it was the power steering pump....it's not. I
thought it was the belt tensioner pulley....it's not. I thought it was the
water pump....it's not. The knock is present at idle when the serpentine
belt is on, but goes away when the belt is removed. I've replaced 3 of the
5 things on the serpentine belt......all that's left are the alternator and
the a/c compressor. Turning the a/c compressor on makes the knock worse,
but the a/c still blows cold air. The clutch on the a/c compressor feels
fine, and the compressor shaft doesn't wobble. I'm stumped and I'm tired of
hanging parts on the damn thing. The car runs and drives fine.....it just
makes this knocking noise.

I want a new car anyway, and I'm pissed off at this one and tired of working
on it. If somebody wants a fuel injected V6 for their project Jeep this
would be a good donor car.

Make me an offer and come take it away before I set fire to it.

Subject: Towing impressions with Airlift suspension airbags

Out on the trail I've had many people ask me about the Airlift airbags I
have in the rear coils of my TJ. They usually ask how much it helps towing.
Well, this weekend, I finaly found out. We towed my 1800lb popup camper up
to Woods Canyon Lake on the Mogollon rim.

Prior to installing the airbags, the backend on the TJ would sag when I
hooked up the trailer. My lights would always be shining too high and people
constantly flashed their highbeam lights at me. The backend would also
bounce a lot when going over bumps and I bottomed out a couple times. This
was even with the RS9000 shocks set to 5.

With the airbags, I set the bag pressure to 30psi (I normally run at the
minimum 5psi on the street) and it is back to normal level. That coupled
with the RS9000s set to 4.5 and the bouncy ride has gone away completely.
Except for the added weight of the trailer slowing it down, it rides like
there is no trailer there. I really like it.

Unfortunately, my trip was cut short by what I think is a leaky front output
shaft seal on my transfer case. I noticed the smell of gear oil on the
uphill stretches between Payson and Woods Canyon Lake. It wasn't leaking
that much, but it left its mark wherever it parked and it had me a bit
paranoid so I came back a day early in case it gave me problems on the way
home. I stopped in Payson on the way back and the XJ owner there checked my
tcase level. It was actually almost full. They through in a little extra and
I was off. No charge. Great guys. They also checked the tranny fluid and it
was fine. They leaking fluid was red so it was tcase fluid. Gonna drop the
skid tomorrow and verify the leak source.

I used a gasket the last time I buttoned up my D44.....it did not seal

used it along it leaked too)....oh well, I've still had better luck using
just RTV. I've yet to try both together.

So they just slip out after I've removed the cross pin and c-
clips? I knew I had to do that first, ha ha, but I wasn't sure if
they would just slide right off. Cool. Thanks. Guess I shouldn't
sweat putting this in. Recommend using a gasket and RTV, or just RTV?

Another article on the cleanup!!

Go to www.offroad.com click Enter and then look for the AZVJC logo art. .
They did a good job of displaying the article I wrote. There is a picture
gallery with 16 photos also, so look for your mug and/or rig if you were at
the cleanup.

This is great press for the club and for the environment. Thanks again to
everyone who participated. Let's do it again next year.
