Subject: Warranty Repairs and dealers . . . The Final Conflict

Wasn't there a movie by this title? :)

I've bought a couple of new cars, and had trouble with warranty
repairs with both stock vehicles, and my modified 2000 Cherokee, both
at Earnhardt's dealerships.

I have always ended up getting things fixed under warranty. You just
have to know how to talk to these guys.

The last time I took my Cherokee into Earnhardt's jeep was for a
sticking passenger door lock.

The service manager immediately said I had voided my warranty. I
didn't even let him finish. I interrupted him, and said that there is
a federal law that protects consumer's rights concerning warranties
on modified vehicles, and if he wanted to press the issue further, to
stop and give me Earnhardt's legal department. The service manager
said nothing more and processed the warranty claim. I also said to
make a note on my service record to not mention that to me anymore,
either. While I was at it, I also told him I wanted a complimentary
rental car for the time my truck was in the shop. I got everything I
asked for.

There was an article in a back issue of FOURWHEELER magazine that
explained the manufacturer's warranty issue on modified vehicles very
clearly. It stated that the only parts that have voided warranties
are those parts that have been directly modified or replaced. If I
can find the article, I'll post the legislation number. Keep it in
the glove box with your registration.

Dan, Mike, are you guy using a gasket and rtv to seal the cover when you put
the diff back to gether. Or are you just using rtv. I went to auto zone and
asked the parts guy what would I need to replace the cover, expecting a
color of rtv he looked up the part for the gasket and suggested rtv black
with the gasket.
What do you guys suggest.

RTV blue and RTV black work the same, only a different pigment,
and a few cents extra for the high-temp black packaging.

...from the engineer who made the stuff.

Not sure about the complete install but I had a friend that needed new
hoses. When he looked at the cost for new ones he went to a recycle yard and
got some "recycled" ones for a fraction of the cost and they are working
great.

Go with Black....it does not show as bad. "Image is Everything"

I base my RTV choice solely on its color matching abilities.

I just use RTV in any color I can scrounge up. I'd go broke if I
bought a new gasket everytime I went in there. :)

Its the Warn & Magnison Act, It basicly say's the modification must
have cuased the problem, if the modification did not cuase the problem
then the Warrenty must be enacted.
i.e. if you put a K&N air filter on, and you bring in for wheel
bearing problem, its going to be a preety far strecht that the K&N
caused a wheel bearing problem.

Blake,

It can happen. I had about a half dozen items fixed under warranty while my
'98TJ was still under the 36 month mark (haven't made it to 36K miles yet).
This was all done after it had a Tera 2" lift, 32" tires, 4.56 gears, and a
Detroit locker and a Detroit Truetrac installed. Two of the problems
involved the D30....front steering/track bar and a improperly torqued axle
nut. (yes....I have no doubt in my mind that the axle nut was a direct
result of the gear/LSD install....the track bar...I am not sure if that was
from the lift or not.)

I had to take it back twice for the axle nut problem, as they could not get
the symptoms to reproduce at the dealership on the 1st visit (how do you fix
what you can not detect?). Once I discovered how to produce the symptoms on
demand, I scheduled a return visit and they had it fixed the same day.

Never once did they argue or raise an eyebrow over what was worked on. And
that was even after the service manager and I had a few exchanges about the
quality of work that was done on my TJ and my wifes XJ (hers was not
warranty work).

This was done at the old Bidulph Jeep dealership in Glendale (now Glendale
Automotive?).

So....I am telling the truth....I don't know anyone that works
there.....etc. It is just how it was.

Stu

I am sorry but I find this VERY hard to believe. I have bought many new
cars and had warranty concerns with all of them. Getting a dealer to repair
something under warranty is like pulling teeth. Hell, I can't even get
Chevy to fix my '99 3/4. It is bone stock. You are either not telling the
entire truth, or "know" someone at the dealer.

I have gone to Darners for years. I have only had them turn me down once
for anything. They gave me a new transfer case, and I had a 4 inch lift and

33's and a new tranny. Even a new alternator because wine in the
bearings,
I never even talked to them about it and it worked fine. They also worked

a deal with me on a dented fuel tank. They replaced the tank saying that
"it was deformed from the factory" and only charged me to change the tank
and
bang out the dent in the skid plate. I had a guy named sam as a service
advisor and they were awesome. I didnt even buy the thing there!!!

The only thing they ever shot me down on was a pinion bearing in the rear
and they wouldn't have but I had regeared.,

I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST DARNERS IN MESA TO ANYONE FOR SERVICE>
