Like Doug B said the drivers side rear upper control arm/trackbar bracket is notorious for breaking. I had Bill Mish fix mine up last time it broke. I've now got a welder and intend to strengthen it with some kind of truss or gusset. It is possible that if you have a CV driveline that the trackbar rubbing against the gas tank may be a contributing factor. I recently replaced my relocation bracket with the new one from RE that clocks the mount forward. Rather than bolting it on I chose to weld it this time.

I have spoken with my advisor @ Earnhardt's. He said they think the
breakage was do to the lift and will not warranty it if it is. He is
now waiting for the heavy line supervisor to look at it. If that
supervisor says it is the lift then I am SOL on a warranty repair. I
have the 4" TERAFLEX with 33" BFG's. It's only money, but I already
paid them when I bought the service contract. At least thats the way
I look at it. More to follow.

I believe you can rent pitman arm pullers from most auto parts stores. what
ever you do, DON'T pound on the arm where it leaves the steering box. You
can ruin the seals.
Are you sure it is bumpsteer and not death wobble. Check the bolt at the
axle end of the trackbar. We put it on with a locknut but maybe it came
loose.
The other thing it could be is a dying steering stabilizer. Yours is a 98 if
I recall properly and the old steering stabilizer might not be up to the
task of those big tires.
It just seems odd that if it were bumpsteer, it would have been happening
since we installed the lift.

About once every 6-9 months you show up to let us know that you haven't given up on Jeeping. You must still be pretty busy 'cause I haven't seen you on the trails for over a year now. Glad you are still around. What shape is your '99 in?

On the heat thing, my '98 TJ sits right below 210 degrees even when in line at In 'n Out. And, we know how long that line can be. I have had it nudge just over 210 but nothing higher.

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that you're not alone. I
briefly had a '98 TJ that did the same thing, and my current '99 TJ has done
it as well. Each time, I was at a drive-through in the summer, and each TJ
did it while it was almost brand new. I asked the dealership about it the
first time it happened on my '99, and he said something about giving the
Jeep some "break-in" time. I think my TJ would still shoot up into the red
if I gave it a chance. Last summer I caught it starting to inch up towards
the red while I was at a drive-through, but I turned off the A/C before it
got bad.

I just decided it was a Jeep thing, and now I watch it in the summer.

Jeremy,

I had the same problem with my '97 TJ. I had to take a right-angle grinder
with a cut-off wheel, and cut a slit through the arm before it would
budge...even then, it came off hard!

Another "whatever you do"...don't try to heat it up...you'll ruin the seals
in the steering box.

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Mike Baney is leading an Ajax (Upper) trail run on Sunday, June 3, 2001.

When: Meet at Texaco in FJ at 10:00 AM.
Where: Hopefully some of the people that did the night run to lower ajax will come, we looked at it, but decided to do it during the day first. Here is the day!
Rating: 4.5
Length: 3 hours?
CB Channel: 4

Upper Ajax is one waterfall after another. It gets very interesting when wet but it is always a challenge for the best built vehicle. It doesn't seem to feel the negative side of "rock stacking;" ramps keep showing up but the waterfalls don't seem to change. Most often you will have a spectator gallery from the main road up above the wash.

This is a fairly short trail in length but always seems to keep you busy most of the day. Body damage is a possibility. Don't forget your lunch, water, camera and spare parts.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Sounds like either a problem or a design flaw to me. I wouldn't just
accept it a being "a Jeep thing".

Just my 2 cents.

Here's what I do:

(1) Spray a bunch of WD-40 or other lubricant onto the steering
box shaft where it will penetrate under the nut.
(2) Use a real pitman arm puller and tighten it a reasonable
amount. Don't force it as it is possible to brake the puller.
(3) While the puller it on and applying force to the arm, tap
around the end of the arm that's on the steering box shaft.
Don't pound real hard - just enough to break things loose.

After tapping for a while, you can try tightening the puller a
little more. With the constant force of the puller and the tapping
to break things loose, it will eventually come off. Be patient.

Also, use of an impact wrench to tighten the puller works well
because it also provides a tapping at the same time. But be careful
because the impact wrench will make it easier to brake the puller.
(I'm speaking from experience here.)

Um. Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a jeep that already has an

The "missing something" part would be that for every jeep I have seen of
those years there was something like 1 in 10 ( I have no idea what the number
is but it is alot to a a little) where automatics. It may be easier to buy
a stcik and do a swap than find a one with an automatic
