Subject: Re: Powertrax No-Slip

If you have a 2001, you may have trouble with the axles being to long
which makes the locker not fit properly. The cross shaft will not go
through if the axles are too long. Your options are to pull the
locker back out and grind the ends of the axles that go into the
locker to make them shorter, or make 2 sides flat on the cross shaft
for it to clear (similar in look to the stock cross shaft). The only
thing that sucks it that it will be the last step of the entire
install before you can actually find out, no way to test it
beforehand, and pulling the springs out then getting the c-clips to
fall back out CAN be PIA, but not neccessarily. The first time I put
a No-Slip in was in a 2001 TJ with D35 and I had this problem. Also
had the same problem with a different rear end but am not sure about
what year it was. I seem to be the only one with this problem, but
Dan Siegel can testament to the fact that it did present a problem.
When you do get to the cross shaft install, do not force it in, it
should go easily with a light tapping of a hammer. If you force it
in, and the locker breaks, Powertrax can tell and will not warranty
the locker (their words, not mine).

Also, use LOTS of grease to hold the parts together when installing
it, really helps cause you have to have things lined up perfectly, or
it won't go together right. Make sure you have the right closed end
wrench to get the pinion shaft bolt out. My 2000 TJ's bolt takes a
different size wrench then my gf's 2001 TJ. If you don't have the
right ones, I do let me know if you need to borrow them to find out
which is the right size, DO NOT force it in or out, stripping that
bolt or the threads could easily mean a new carrier. Mine takes a
1/4" 12 point wrench, and my gf's takes a 6mm (approx .24") 12 point
wrench, or vice versa I don't rememeber, either way I have both now!

Doing it yourself is good, cause if you break an axle (likely with
the D35) knowing how to take it apart and put it back together again
on the trail can be a real lifesaver.
Good luck.

Get a flowmaster. I have a 3 chamber deltaflow & high flow cat on my XJ &
love it. It's also the most durable muffler you'll ever see, the thing is
made of like 3/16 steel.

Ok, after yestedays, Broken Arrow, run.
I nioticed I whacked my Stock Muffler, pretty good,
and pushed it back even further, The weld after the
CAT conv. was already cracked, and now it is pushed
back atleast another inch. So now it is time to go
ahead and get a new muffler and maybe exhaust too not
sure if when I pushed the muffler it pinched the
exhaust pipe. I did notice a loss of power on the way
home.
I was thinking of a CAT back, from Borla maybe.
Any toher suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated.
Also on where I could pick one up for a decent price!

Thanks a Bunch!

Today on a nice easy run up to Crown King I busted my drivers side
rear upper control arm bracket off. I dropped it off at the dealer @
1830 to see if they would repair/replace under warranty. No word
until my normal service advisor comes in tomorrow. If I were a
betting man I'd say I will be getting a new housing ordered from DTD
tomorrow afternoon. Any suggestions on how to put a fix in place
until it arrives? I have a D35c in the rear now.

If you are expecting to get this covered by warranty, don't hold your
breath. Dealers LOVE to tell us jeepers that our mods have voided the
warranty. Just today, I took my '01 TJ back to Bill Luke to have them check
on a vibration. Luckily, I "anonymously" called my service advisor to ask
him if my 31" tires with no lift would void the warranty. The TJ is only
two weeks old with 1700 miles. He (the service advisor) told me that the
31" tires WOULD void my warranty on anything drive train related. I had to
put the stock 205/75's back on just to drive it to the dealer.

Who's your dealer? Earnhardt's sells Teraflex lifts in the parts
department and also has them installed. I was told by my service guy
there that my lift wouldn't void the warranty, and haven't had
problems (yet).

Hey Guys and Gals, my Willys is built, and am going to do a easy shakedown cruise this Sat am. No specific trail, there is an area just off the I 10 near Casa grande that we will be riding in. This would be an ideal run for stock or near stock vehicles, as we won't be doing much in the way of hard, scary stuff. If you would like to get out and do something, while it is still cool, this would be the one to check out. E-mail me off list, and I will get back to you, with the particulars. Happy Jeepin

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

John Butler is leading a Woodpecker (Lower) trail run on Saturday, June 2, 2001.

When: 4:30pm Saturday afternoon, June 2nd, 2001
Where: Texaco at Florence Junction.
Rating: 4.5-
Length: Open
CB Channel: 4

I have never run this trail. Scott Kruize has offered to lead. We plan on doing lower Woodpecker and if time permits upper Woodpecker also.

Lower Woodpecker is really more a "play" area then a "trail". It is very short in length but BIG on rocks. There are five or so different "paths" to take through this outcropping of rocks, some bigger than others, some more off camber than others. Sometimes there's water, sometimes not. It's different each time you traverse it but it definitely doesn't get easier.

There are full rock walls covered with pictographs. How wonderful it would be to know the story behind all of them.

Your camera is a must. Bring sun lotion and lots of water because you may spend some time watching your fellow wheeler struggle or climb or slide on the rocks. You can continue up through Upper Woodpecker if time permits, but that makes for a long day.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Funny, I had the same thing happen to mine Sunday. It is the same
bracket that holds the track bar on the housing. I welded mine back
on for now and intend on adding a brace or two to support it.
Fortunately I was running Erics tires at the time and rubbed the
inside of the tire on the frame when it shifted. Thanks Eric! :)

The upper left rear is a real weak point. It's a good idea to truss it a
bit. I had mine crack at the axle housing and also broken at the frame
mount. For those that haven't reinforced theirs yet, it's a good idea to
keep an eye on it, or maybe do some preventative trussing.

parts you put on new. There is a service advisor at Earnhardts who has a

Subject: Tire Pressure Re-visited

I know this has been a topic in the recent past, and I did pay attention to the post's. I just put 33x12.50-15 MT/R's on 8" rims and have been using the chalk method to get the pressures correct. I am down to 22 psi to get the full tread in contact with the road. My question is: Is there such a thing as to low for the road, and am I damaging the tire by running at this pressure. The jeep rides much better at this pressure, but I don't want to ruin the tires.

I have been messing with tire pressure too, I find that about 23 psi in my
33x12.50 on a 10" rim is using the full width, but it is also cutting my
gas milage in half! I can get about 220 miles on a full tank with the
pressure at 33 psi, and it is using *most* of the tread, but if I go down
to 25 psi, I get about 135 miles to a tank, and I am running full tread.
In my opinion, I would rather get the bettar gas milage, and let the tires
wear *slightly* than filling up 2 times a week with the price of gas now.

Blake,

You might want to use the old Bidulph Jeep dealership at about 45th Ave. &
Glendale (not that far from Bill Luke on I-17?). I think it is now called
Glendale Automotive. They regularly sell lifted TJs (3" lift w/ 33" tires)
right off of that lot. I had several things worked on while I was still in
warrantee, and I was running 3" lift and 32" tires, 4.56 gears, etc. A
couple of the items with the front axle. They never once gave me an static
about being lifted.

Now...on the flip side of the coin, I was not totally impressed with their
work. I have had a few chats with the service manager, making him explain
why everything was not put back together when I came to pick up the vehicle.
This has happened to me on multiple occasions with both my TJ and XJ. He
doesn't like me very much.....I expect his people to do real work....not
half ***** work.....go figure.

Anyway.....it is an alternative to taking your tires off all of the time.

Stu

Thanks,
Martin

Lot's of places don't allow firearms.. My work place doesn't. Can't carry on
school grounds, in any place that serves alcohol, in any Federal Building,
blah, blah, blah.. So what's the problem.. Our local 4x4 club doesn't allow
the display of firearms (read, open carry) on any club functions.. I have no
problems with any of that.. You do have your CCW permit and carry not
exposed, right ??
The open display (read carry) of a firearm is viewed by many as an image
problem, and socially unacceptable in socal areas.. We're waaayyy past the
1800's ;)
I'm always armed, yet no one every knows.. I don't display in the open, I
never have to mention it. It's not something that I feel the need to brag
about. I currently have 4 firearms.. I've been "carrying" since the late
1960's and *NEVER* had to use or even draw (outside of time in the Army), so
I'm not concerned or worried..

That should be:

http://www.azvjc.org/interact.asp?T=124

(Trip #142 is Mike A.'s Broken Arrow run)

One of the features I'm working on is a "reminder" button that will
allow the trip leader to send out a reminder e-mail from the website.

Subject: Regear help...

I am going to regear and would like some suggestions. I have a 97 TJ
4 cyl. and want to step up to either a 4.56 or 4.88. Obviously the
4.88 would be better for wheeling and I will get more power, but it
is a little weaker. My question is; does anyone have 4.56's with
33's on a 4 cyl and what difference did you see? If you have
switched from 4.10 to 4.88, how is the freeway driving? The only
performance mod so far is a Poweraide TB spacer. I can get the
4.56's for almost half of the 4.88 price. Thanks for all help.

Mike

Could you just cut a bunch of small pieces and weld them into a
more curved shape ?

I'd be afraid to modify the pan, since it does have to be flat up
top to mate to the block, and provide for good drainage to the sump.
I believe there is still a baffle in there too... At least there
was on the 86CJ I did a couple of weeks ago.

I was there too, I got there a little late (as ya'll were pulling out). I was
in the Tan Rio Grande with the white "redneck" antenna. I also had my roomate
in the red Jeep following me. We caught up with you at submarine rock and
passed ya'll before chicken point. We thought about saying hi and joining
you, but we were "unhappy" with the unnessary risks a few took going way-way
off the trail (over the edge at chickenpoint). Perhaps this is the reason the
greenies want to keep us off the trails... Just because you can do something,
doesn't mean you should.

(stepping off soapbox)

Now my roomate is convinced he owns the best vehicle on earth. (Something I
am sure all of us already know...) We had a good time, and I hope everyone
else did too.
