Mark,
This is my 3rd summer with my TJ and mine reached the red zone while idling earlier this week for the first time. I've never done anything to the cooling system so I'm going to replace the hoses and thermostat and do a flush and fill. The hoses look okay but when your talking about being on the trail it's better to just replace them every 2 years and carry the old ones as spares.
Good luck with yours. I hope both of our TJs run cooler very soon.

First of all I must say that I am not an internal engine mechanic by no means. I am trying to get some info on what my compression should be in my 4.0 in my 87 XJ. In my book it calls 8.8:1. But I don't know what the hell that means. I did run the compression test, and the readings were all within 6lbs. ranging from 124 to 130. What should the actual reading be,,,, does anyone know? I would appreciate any help I can get in this matter...............

Keith,
The readings look good, generally, as long as they are all within
10% of each other they are ok. The actual pressure reading will
vary depending on static compression ratio, cam specifications
and valve timing. Are you trying to diagnose a specific problem?
There could possibly be a specification for the pressure in a
shop manual, sometimes they are there, sometimes not.

I know that when I left AZ the VJC was not organized in a manner that
would allow a fund-raiser. After all, it's hard to raise funds
without a treasurer... I offered the Jeep as a raffle item anyway
because I wasn't sure if you all had organized to a point that would
have a treasurer. I'm glad to see the AZ-VJC is just as disorganized

Blake, does the YJ carrier not work in a CJ??? or is it just the reverse cut gears??? the reason i ask is i have a YJ carrier that i was planning to use in my CJ(no gears). i know the YJ D30s are reverse and the CJ D30s are standard. the carrier should just need to be installed the opposite way you would on the YJ. at least thats my theory.

I have a set of heads that came off of '91 Chevy 1 ton truck. I put new

it about 10K before swapping out for another 350. First 50 bucks takes
them.
I also have a 12" electric fan. It is an aftermarket type that you can use
on any radiator. It's about 3 - 4 inches thick, including shroud. First 20
bucks takes it. Would work great in the summer heat.

Yikes, I would say flush the radiator, 185 degree thermostat, along
with hoses. I thought 210 when flooring it up I-17 at 3500 rpm was
hot. Considering I have a 4500 rpm redline... = ( Also check the
fan clutch, and consider a pusher electric fan between the radiator
and grill that is switched on when you see the temp climbing.

All,
Ran into a couple of issues with the old Cj this weekend in Rocky Point.
Ran up a really steep hill part way, stopped and while attempting to
back down...no reverse. It seemed as though there was not enough line
pressure to hold the clutches together. After checking fluid
level...fine, and letting it sit for a couple of hours...revers came
back. Seems to be a temperature related problem...when hot, reverse goes
away, ice cold, will bark the tires.....
Second issue. The very next time that I drove the Jeep the engine
started running poorly....really poor. It sounded like it was missing
and a huge loss of power. Almost like a limp mode or something. You
think these problems are related to some kind of sensor going out or
something?
Does anyone know of a good shop to take this to? It has a 97 chevy
Vortec motor and a 4L60-E tranny.

Went to the Coves for some easy fun on Monday. We found a guy at Cove 1 who had busted his drive shaft on the big hill. He tried to finish in FWD only and busted both u-joints. As he began to slide backwards he panicked because he couldn't stop the roll so he turned sideways (!!!) He came extremely close to rolling the other (bad) way. Billy Aylesworth winched him up with my Jeep as an anchor to Billy's. They just don't make Jeeps like they used to.
Then Billy was hurdling the Himmer barricades along one of the trails and got too much air one time. He came down nose first and busted off his passenger wheel. He went home, got parts and returned (to find Butcher Jones closed due to capacity parking). Finally got home at 8:45PM last night.

Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!
Mike Anderson lead a trail run Monday, May 28, 2001 across Broken Arrow
Well, I finally arrived at the meeting spot at Carefree Hwy, only 15 min. late thanks to Eric. We had to swap wheels back before the trip. I am terrible with names, but I know we had 9 there. There were 4 YJ's, 2 XJ's, a CJ, and 2 TJ's. After taking the drive to the trailhead where we met up with another XJ that passed us on the way (he had to drop off his wife in town) we aired down and started. Everone did fine and had no trouble at all (for the most part) and we had lunch at Chicken Rock. Then it was on to the cracks! I love this place. Most of the group will probably tell you I'm nuts, but really, I'm not! After playing around for a while we got to Devis Staircase, and a few of us ran it backwards. We all made, although some made it look easier than others. After getting back to the last slab and playing for a while again, it was time to go. A few of us decided to try to go to Beaver Creek and play in the water, but there were too many people and we changed our minds. Other than Eric testing out his new Teraflex long arm kit and getting the pass. side upper control arm bracket to start tearing off of the axle housing, there were no other problems. Hope someone posts some pics soon! Thanks everyone for a great time. And thanks Ken for making me lead! :)

I agree, not so much as to preach, but consider what will happen if the
person has some troubles and needs to back down. They have to wait until
the person behind back down now too.
Second I want to appologize to everyone on the Gas Pipeline trip that had
the displeasure to be in front of me. I never adjusted my lights after
installing my lift. I tried my best to remember to sut off mylights and
only use when necessary. When the person in front of me was going up or
down I tried to shut them off until they were out of the path of my lights,
this would not be a problem if I would just adjust them(I will be the next
night run). So to all those blinded by me this last weekend please accept
my apology.
One thing I think we also need to keep in mind is our language. During the
run over the weekend(Gas Pipeline/Lower Raw Deal) a large amount of loud
offensive language(in my opinion) was thrown about. Luckily a friend of
mine was only able to do the Gas Pipeline(most of the language I heard was
on Lower Raw Deal). I would have hated to have exposed his son to the
constant cussing. I don't recall in english class being taught to use a
cuss word as the noun, verb and adjective of a sentence. Now I am not
saying I am perfect and an inappropriate word will slip out now and then as
I am sure will happen to alot of people. Please consider others when in a
group and keep the volume and cussing to a minimum.
Thanks.
If need be and you want to cuss up a storm or flame me for my comments
please address them to me so as to not offend others on the board. By the
same token if you think I am wrong and just want to say that too, by all
means. If I am the only one that feels this way I will just have to turn a
deaf ear, although this is the first trip I have experienced a person/people
within our group acting this way.

Mark,
This is my 3rd summer with my TJ and mine reached the red zone while idling earlier this week for the first time.

After all, it's hard to raise funds

because I wasn't sure if you all had organized to a point that would
have a treasurer.

I also have a 12" electric fan. It is an aftermarket type that you can use

bucks takes it.
