Yeah I have the overhead console and I like it (it does rattle some though)
I never thought to use it for my gun though I may try that out. Jim F.

You might consider that overhead console Tuffy sells. It has two
lockable compartments, ostensibly for stereo or CB, but seems like one
would be good for a gun.

Anyone have one of these?

Not to cause any contention but...
What if someone doesn't use Mapsource? What if someone doesn't
use a Garmin GPS? Wouldn't a plain text file be just as good and
compatible across all platforms? Most any mapping software can
import a plain text file of waypoints.
Maybe Mapsource tracks are text files....don't know as I don't
use it.

The CB worked. The radio didn't work and none of the gauges worked. Ignition Off Draw doesn't sound right. None of these items (dash gauges and radio) work unless ignition is on. Where is the IOD fuse. Anyone know?? Keep in mind, everything else worked. Lights, blinkers, brake lights, the airbag warning light worked, the seat belt warning light worked. I think all of the dash lights worked too. Just the gauges and the radio were out. I drove it for 3 days this way. All I had to do was drive slow and fill 'er up more often. (Actually, I used my GPS for a speedometer since the lighter socket worked.)

Were that the case, then the CB or other electrical device that is wire to
that circuit would not have worked (because the fuse was blown). To the
best of my knowledge, Jon did not have his CB wired into this
circuit.....but if he did, than he needs to say if the CB did or did not
work after his dash panel went on the blink.

Ok, I want to throw an auto locker into the TJ's Dana 35, and I
want some feedback on which one is the best for a daily driver. I
don't want to go with the ARB, since it is too complicated and too
expensive. I want a good auto locker that I can install with a
little help, and just "point and shoot" whenever extra traction needs
come up. So which one is it? Powertrax No-Slip? Easy Locker? Lock
Rite? Detroit Gearless?

If you want a cheap and easy to install locker, I would recommend a
LOCKRITE. I am running a LOCKRIGHT in the rear of my CJ5 with a V8. Have
had no problems other than a constant "SNAP", "CRACKLE" and "POP" when
turning.

I think putting any kind of locker in a Dana 35 is a bad idea. You might try a true trac limited slip as an alternative. If you do install a locker be sure to carry spare axleshafts as you are going to need them. Or look into the Superior Super 35 kit which includes a Detroit locker and new 30 spline axleshafts. Jon Loveless did this to his TJ.

Best 7.5' topo maps available (made by your tax money and mine!).

As to to text files.....I'll export one of those for any one that wants it.
Myself....I HATE TYPING IN GPS COORDINATES....it is bad enough to type them

Anyway....with something like OziExplorer, you can use virtually any GPS.
It supports dozens of GPS receivers. Can't go wrong with software like

They told me it's because "...it's Chrysler, it takes special fluid" I

budge on the price (T-bird @ I-17 shop) They dont drop the pan either,

I had a buddy in Alabama that had a '95 YJ. His oil filter came loose and
fell off while driving to work (about 10 miles). The 4.0 completely dried
up and froze. We had to rebuild the entire engine. I think he was using a
standard 30W oil with no special additives.

Subject: Re: Garmin Mapsource

Ahh...Doesn't Garmin (or somone) put out software that will
upload and download a plain text file directly to the GPS? Maybe
not, Lowrance does and their GPS's will take a text file as an
upload. Seems as tho' I have heard Garmin uses their own
proprietary format?
I would never expect anyone to have to type in all the
coordinates manually! This is 2001 after all. :)
Registered Ozi user here. It will export plain text files from a
track downloaded from any GPS if I remember correctly. (it is on
my laptop and I don't have it booted up right now)
Even Street Atlas will import a text waypoint file and plot it on
the map. You can then permanently attach the track to the map so
it will show if the track is from a road not shown on the map. I
think Ozi will do this also.
Just seems to me that anyone who has a GPS will (or should
anyway) have some software to convert a text file for use in the
GPS. GPS's have too small of a screen and trying to type
waypoints (as you noted) for any use is just too tedious. I did
that once or twice when I first got mine, transfering coordinates
manually from a paper map and inputting the route manually into
the GPS. It works, but in the time it took to do all of that I
could have got lost two or three times and found my way back. I
immediately got the cables and software to simplify this process.
:) I rarely even look at the screen on my GPS...just use the
laptop, much nicer.

I would have to agree. If you have a D35 and want a locker - do the Super 35. Otherwise get a good l/s.

I am new to the Jeep community and am intent on getting
a jeep in the next month. I'm seriously looking at a
TJ. Can someone explain what the Jeep website explains
as "Command Trac part-time four wheel drive"? Is it true
honest to goodness four wheel drive, if so how does it work?

I would have to think it is not very responsible to leave a weapon
unattended in any place of a vehicle when parked. What if the car is
stolen? Eventually they will open everything looking for something
of value, even if it means a crowbar to open a lock-box. Keeping the
gun out of those hands means one less gun on the streets or in the
news. Just my two cents...

Part time 4wd is 4wd w/o any differentiation between the rotation of front
and rear wheels. This makes it perfect for off-road, but should not be used
on dry pavement.

The Command-Trac is still not TRUE 4-wheel drive. It only locks in the
transfer case and turns front and rear driveshafts at the same speed. To
achieve honest 4WD, you must add aftermarket locking differentials in
the front and rear axles. Even with a factory Trac-Loc (limited slip,
non-locking)in the rear end, the best you have is 3 wheel drive.

Here you go.
We will meet up at the Table Mesa exit at 5:30 PM (east side of the
freeway...don't cross over the freeway and go to the normal air down
spot) and then proceed up to Black Canyon City and start the trail
run.

After installation of something like this, can I still put the differential
skid protection on there? Does it fit? I'd still like to see the OX
protected from rock attacks.

Just wondering. I am also keeping an eye out for locker solutions for
installation sometime next year.

Thanks,

Subject: Re: Confused about Command Trac

A part time transfer case, like command trac, means you can't be in
4wd all the time. You can only use it when you really need it, like
snow, mud, gravel, and other really low traction conditions.

This sounds worse than "full time" systems, but it isn't.

A part time system basically just locks the front and rear axles
together. This means that if either axle has good traction you keep
moving.

A full time system could (theoretically) get stuck if ONE(!) wheel
has no traction. So at worst a full time 4x4 is really "one wheel
drive" (so is a 2 wheel drive vehicle). Full time systems are more
suited to snow on the road than "real" off roading. This doesn't mean
they are bad, just not as suited for more extreme conditions. The
Jeep select trac (on Grand Cherokees and Cherokees?) has a part time
setting so it can handle the worse stuff.

However, most 4x4s (including stockish Jeeps) are really sort of two
wheel drive. The reason for this is the differentials. Differentials
are funny in that they only provide enough torque (rotational force)
as the wheel with least traction can use. So you could have a
situation where you have two wheels with traction (one in front and
one behind) and still go nowhere.

Traction aiding devices like limited slip differentials and lockers
change the equation. In particular, lockers make the differential
provide the same torque to both tires on an axle. So if a part time
4x4 vehicle is "locked" at both ends, it can move as long as one
wheel has traction. This amount of traction isn't free (in cost or in
on road driving characteristics), but it is necessary for the most
extreme of conditions. The vast majority of people, EVEN ON THIS
LIST, don't drive in these conditions.

In short, part time system just locks front and back axles together
so they both spin. But "open" differentials mean this is kind of 2
wheel drive vehicle on worst conditions. Can be used on paved streets
only if they are totally iced up or snowed up. Other on pavement use
could cause trouble.

Full time systems have some sort of differential between front and
back as well as left and right on each axle. Great for rain, snow,
etc. Less good for most extreme conditions. At worst can act like One
Wheel Drive (just like 2x4 car/truck).

Part time 4x4 with lockers front and rear could move even if three
wheels were off the ground (rare occurrence).

So, did this help or just confuse?

Joe Larkin

Subject: Which Locker and Dana 35's

I have a question for all of the guys that have this dilike for
Dana 35's. Have you ever broke an axle or actually seen someone else
break an axle? I have a 97TJ with a Dana 35, Detroit Locker, 4.88
gears and 33" tires with 109000 miles on it. I have done 3+ trails
and have had no problems with it. I know that the Dana 35 is not a
great axle and I wished that Jeep had never found the thing. But they
did and now I have one. Not everyone in this Club has the ability to
purchase or install larger axles in their Jeeps. Some of us are just
in this for the fun of it and not to build up the ultimat Rock Buggy.
I recently had the opportunity to talk with some guys from Colorado
about their Jeeps. The President of the Club had a CJ7 with Dana 44's
front and rear running 38" Swampers with a 350 V8. His Buddy had a
Rock Buggy with an AMC 20 in the rear and a Dana 44 up front running
38" Swampers with a 350 V8 also. They have run Moab, Rubicon and were
on there way down to Phoenix to run our trails. I am sure that these
guys have done more then most, and if they can run these axles with
38's then I see no need to run out there and buy up some huge truck
axles for my little 33's. Now when the time comes that my Axles fail
then I will worry about it. But untill then, if it aint broke don't
fix it. So there is my 2 cent's. Now go ahead, Flame On!

Thane
97TJ

PS; To answer the original question. I would go with a Lock Right. I
have one in the front of mine and I like it. Also, an Ox Locker is
not an easy install. It would be the same as a Detroit Locker or an
ARB Air locker. lots of time and money to install and set up.

All,

I am looking to get rid of my 73 CJ5 which has been in storage in

I am considering donating the Jeep to the AZ-VJC so y'all can use it

I was one of the original "dirty half-dozen" in the AZ-VJC if you
