OK, My turn!
How about a matching (same size) spare tire? I've wheeled with some of you, and have seen (twice) people with tire damage, and NO SPARE!
I'd like to suggest either a pistol or a compact rifle for the list. I know some are anti-gun, but. . . I recently had a friend ask me what kind of good quality inexpensive rifle to buy (his first), and I told him to get a Romanian SKS fifle (7.62 x 39). You can pick up a new hand-select one for $129.00 from J and G sales in Prescott.

The gun comment got me thinking. I am used to carrying a gun with me
a lot of the time (concealed weapon permit etc) but now that I have a
TJ I was wondering how secure is the stock console & glove box? I was
originally going to replace the center console with a tuffy but now
that I have my jeep I really like the factory console. I have an
alarm with motion sensor going in the jeep today but will that and
the stock console be enough to keep my gun etc relatively safe when I
have the top and doors off?

Subject: Re: CJ-7 Wandering Caster Angles?????
Dan,
I did pretty much the same thing to my 79 CJ5. After changing springs and
tire/wheels I noticed that the front tended to wander a bit at highway
speeds. I went to 4 Wheeler's Supply and got some 4 degree shims and put
them in. Now it drives really well on the freeway, at least up to 80 MPH,
which is faster than I'll ever need to drive it. I never bothered to
measure the caster angle. I have a caster/camber gauge but I don't have the
rotating plates to measure the angle the wheels are turned to when measuring
caster and camber. I really didn't need to measure it because I could
pretty much feel where it was (maybe 1/2 to 1 degree positive) and I wanted
a lot of caster since the CJ5 is a short wheelbase vehicle. OEM spec for
caster on most vehicles tends to be in the 2-4 degree range, but I like a
lot of caster in all my cars so I bought the steepest shims 4 Wheelers had
and called it good. The shims they had were for a Chevy truck and were too
wide for my Jeep, but I sawed 1/4 inch off of each side and they fit fine.
You'll like having a lot of caster, and if you have power steering you'll
never feel it on the trail. I think for a short, high vehicle like a Jeep
having a lot of caster is a real plus, and perhaps a higheway safety issue
as well.

Exchanging CDs or floppies are not needed. You can .zip a half dozen MapSource tracks into a single file that will total about 20KB or so. Easy enough to attach to an e-mail message. Arrange an exchange with the person ahead of time so he doesn't think you are sending him an e-mail attached virus. ;)

It's fairly easy to get a membership here. I'm not sure if anything is safe. Maybe we can share them with each other when we meet at the trails. Maybe a monthly/quarterly meeting where we exchange CD-ROMS or something (you must drive your Jeep to get a CD : ) ) I suppose we'll have to count on the laws of our country to keep these angry people away from us. I'm just curious, what do these anti-4-wheeling types use to get to the trails to plant spikes and cables? Geo Metros? Saturns?
Everyone be safe this weekend.

Rick,
I don't mind people in the club sharing GPS tracks and waypoints...that is one benefit the club can supply.
I would strongly urge NO one to post our tracks on a web based server. I personally do not want the diaper tossing, beer drinking, trash leaving type of 4 wheeler using the trails we do. Obviously, they already do, but giving them directions will only make it worse. Ask Scott Duety (sp) about his feelings on the AZ trails book he published, now that has been out for a couple of years.
Second....with the eco-freaks on the rise, I would also prefer for them to not know of my wheelin' spots. I don't need their cables, spikes, etc. put on our trails (and yes, they have done that). Burning car dealerships and houses is bad enough....don't give them directions to where we go Jeepin'.
OK....I'll step off my soap box now, and I hope you understand where I am coming from. I have heard other club members make these same comments so I know that I am not the only one that feels this way. ;)

I think CJs specify 6 or 8 degrees of caster. I forget which way
is positive but you want to rotate the pinion down.
To get a measurement of caster, it's the line that both
ball joints pass through. It may be a bit easier to just measure
for change... Place an angle gauge on the flat of the axle tube,
just to the right/left of the diff cover. Shim it a bit and
remeasure. The difference is what you did gain in caster.
I run 5deg on my YJ (scout 44s) and it could be a little more...

No. Lots of Jeeps are broken into and gone through while the alarm contiunues to go off. Unless you are close enough to hear it yourself I think it's mostly ignored. (Besides if your gun is in the TJ how to you expect to have it available just in case that alarm goes off?) The stock console lock is a joke. Don't count on it to stop anyone. If you need to leave it in the TJ get a good lockbox like the Tuffy. Otherwise take the gun out when you park it.

I was sort of wondering if those Slick-50 commercials have some truth to
them?
Say if you had used Slick 50 and then crunched your oil pan and drained it,
supposedly you could drive "50 miles to a service station" with no adverse
effects.
I know the commercials are hard to believe, but has anyone actually had such
an experience?
If so then I would say Slick-50 would be a good survival tool for Jeepin..

I have a 95 XJ and want to put a CB in for wheeling. I am not sure where
the best place to mount the antenna is. I have the factory roof rack I was
thinking of mounting it there or getting a body mount and putting it on the
right rear quarter panel.
I like some input from other XJ owners where you mounted yours.
The other question I have is how far above the roof line should the antenna
be to get the most out of the radio?

Nah that's bad stuff. It erodes the bearings in the engine and
distributes "magic bearing dust" all over the insides as an attempt
to give you something to lube with. It's not the best for an engine
you plan to keep.
But In fairness I will say that I used it, then ran my Fiat (8000
RPM redline) hard for a couple of days with no oil....

Subject: Re: Jeep survival kit, Slick 50?
Does Slick-50 work? YES!
While I was in Panama, the Back Country 4x4 club decided to go around
Gatun Lake (this is the lake that the canal runs through). On the
East Side of the Canal (yes the canal runs North & South not East &
West) is the main road, about 40 miles from one side of the isthmus
to the other. It takes about 2 hours to drive since it is a 2 lane
steep twisty road with lots of slow overloaded trucks.
The other side of the lake is a lot more adventurous, about 80 miles
around; about 20 of which is paved, 20 miles of grated road, 20 miles
of well-defined trail, 15 miles of two parallel tracks in the mud,
and about 5 miles of "Where the hell did the trail go?" Every time
the club had done the run in the past, it was a three-day camping
trip, so this is what was planned.
The first day mostly involved driving from the South (Panama City)
side to the North Side (Colon) on the twisty 2 lane black top. After
traveling for a couple of hours on this, we crossed the canal at the
Gatun Locks, headed past the Army base (Ft. Sherman) and onto a
gravel road. Eventually we reached the well-defined, yet very muddy
trail, locked into 4wd and continued on for a ways and then camped.
The next day, we broke camp and continued on, eventually getting to
the "Where the Hell did the trail go?" section. Originally, the Army
Engineers built this trail in the early 1970's; 20 years of neglect
had definitely taken its course, as the trail all but disappeared in
a few places. One of these was where a bridge used to be; instead of
a bridge, we got to slide down a muddy hill and then attempt to get
far enough up the hill to get a winch or strap on. Only a few of us
managed to make it all the way to the top without a winch; with L/S
and Lockers, I was one of the lucky few. Some had problems just
getting far enough ahead to get the winch on them, so a daisy chain
was attempted. This is where the trouble began, the Jeep in the
middle of the daisy chain was pulled sideways into a ditch and onto
its side. After working to get this Jeep righted (on a hill that was
slick and steep) it was another few hours before the next Jeep could
even attempt the hill.
This Jeep is the hero of the story, its owner had bought the Jeep
used, rebuilt the 258 straight 6 (the same block that the 4.0L 6cyl
is based from) and after the break in period put in Slick-50.
Anyway, back on the trail, he decides that he'd gonna do this hill.
I thought he was going to blow his engine he had it winding so tight,
he came through the small river and charged up the hill, bouncing
from side to side like a super-ball in a PVC pipe. One bounce too
many as it turned out; he bounced off the edge of the road and right
onto a big rock that grabbed a-hold of his drain plug and ripped it
out of the oil pan, along with a large chunk of the oil pan. This
took some more assessment, as the hole was too large to do a trail
repair. It was getting to be about 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and we
were only just over half way there. The shortest distance was in
front of us, but we still had a few more miles of really rough
terrain.
It was decided that we would continue on. At first we tried towing
the broken Jeep, but the steep hills just proved too tough to tow the
lifeless Jeep through. There were discussions about leaving the
Jeep, getting a spare oil pan and coming back for it. The owner
decided "the Hell with it" climbed in fired it up; he figured he'd
drive it until the engine seized and hopefully that would be long
enough to get through the tough stuff. Well he ran it for the few
hours remaining in day two, and it was speculated that it probably
wouldn't start in the morning, but it did. And he continued to drive
it until we got back to the wash-board gravel road. Once he got it
back to his house, he put on a new oil pan, filled it with oil and it
started right up.
This all happened about a year and a half before I left Panama, and
when I left Panama his Jeep was still running. So my opinion on
Slick-50 is that it does work, and it works well. Of course the old
258 Jeep engines are as tough as they come as well, so you might not
get the same results in every engine. As with everything, your
mileage may vary...

Allen,
Speaking for myself, I've got all of the list - excluding the spare parts -
in my Jeep at all times. Some items are fixtures, e.g, the Jerry cans, one
for fuel and one for water, are mounted on the swing-away. The high-lift is
mounted on the roof rack as is the second spare. all the tools and supplies
fit into two Besttop plastic side boxes (not secure, but convenient) and a
toolbox that is in the rear compartment.
For personal gear I carry much more than is on this list. I've got a pack
and gear bag that together weigh 65 lbs. and which would allow me to remain
in the field for a month (subject to acquisition of additional water and
food) if necessary. These are also in the back compartment.
For those of you doing trails, that 65 lbs is probably spare parts such as
axels, etc.
My guess is most of the serious Jeep-types have most of this stuff, and
more, already. It just seems long on a list.

Nah that's bad stuff. It erodes the bearings in the engine and
distributes "magic bearing dust" all over the insides as an attempt
to give you something to lube with. It's not the best for an engine
you plan to keep.
But In fairness I will say that I used it, then ran my Fiat (8000

That should just about get you to the corner store or to help remove an
Exploder off a curb, you should see the list if you are actually gonna go

Allen,
Speaking for myself, I've got all of the list - excluding the spare parts -
in my Jeep at all times.
