I think everyone could add a few items as they read this and re-post
it, I think it would cover the bases for what we should keep in our
Jeeps when Jeepin'.

Fire extinguisher ABC rated
At least a gallon of drinking water
Full set of sockets and wrenches
Big Fawkin' Hammer
Bailing wire
Flashlight
Air compressor or CO2 tank
MRE's
First aid kit
Jacket or space blanket
CB or some sort of communication device(cell phone)

Anyone else got anything to add?

Dick's is great! I got my CV shaft made from them and
they did pretty much the same thing. He asked me how
much I was quoted, then made it like $30 less than
that. Great service and also they said that they have
never had anyone break one or their shafts but if it
happened, they would be happy to replace it.

You may remember that I lost all of the instruments on my dashboard a couple of days ago. There wasn't a fuse that had blown so I took it to the dealer from whence I had purchased it 3 years and 24,000 miles ago (Earnhardt). I normally wouldn't have gone there because they get so badly flamed here, but I was desperate and they could take me right away.

Well, they replaced the fuse in the IOD. What the hell is an IOD?? My wife says it is a B/C devise but I digress. I checked my Haynes manual and can't find any such acronym. The computers are called ECM or PCM but I can't locate IOD.

Any help? Do you know where the fuse is for this? Not in the fuse box behind the glove box.

I was much too proud to ask the service guy but I am none too proud to ask my 700 Jeeping friends. I also trust your answer better.

Oh yeah. 98TJ. Incidentally, they diagnosed and changed the fuse, part number ADC10 - no charge and they were done in an hour. They did say that they wouldn't attempt to trace the short which caused the fuse to blow since I had so many after market electrical parts installed. That is a total of 1 CB, BTW. The night lights are factory electrical but replacement lamps.

An antihistimine such as Benedryl!

You never know what type of insect, or plant sting is going to get
you and you never know what the reaction is going to be.

FYI.... Benedryl is what they administer for coral snake bites.

If someone hasn't put a drain plug in the pan make sure you have
plenty of floor-dry on hand. Also don't wear any clothes that you
like very much. When you loosen the pan leave most of the screws
in, just loosen it enough to drop one rear (lowest) corner. Be
ready for the fluid and hopefully you can catch some of it before
it runs all over under the Jeep and makes the rest of the project
a messy experience. Other than that, make sure you get the old
gasket under the filter off of the valve-body before you put a
*new* gasket on with a new filter. I am not sure if the torque
converter on the ZJ has a drain plug but you may want to drain it
if you can.
You can buy a drain plug to install into the pan to make it
easier the next time you do the change.
Personally, I would take it to a transmission shop that has the
new flushing system, have them do the filter and then a complete
flush. This insures that all of the oil is changed (removing the
pan only changes about 1/2 of the oil in the transmission) May
cost a few bucks, but laying under a vehicle in a puddle of oil
on a 100+ degree day is not my idea of a pleasant time tinkering
on my jeep.
Transfer case----drain it and refill...not much to it.

IOD = Ignition Off Draw.

Its a fuse that powers certain accessories when the ignition is in
the 'off' position.

How it made your instruments go bad... I've no clue.

Subject: XJ CB Antenna Mounting

I have a 95 XJ and want to put a CB in for wheeling. I am not sure where the best place to mount the antenna is. I have the factory roof rack I was thinking of mounting it there or getting a body mount and putting it on the right rear quarter panel.

I like some input from other XJ owners where you mounted yours.

The other question I have is how far above the roof line should the antenna be to get the most out of the radio?

Thanks

more water for the Jeep
extraction tools: shovel, tow strap, chain
foul weather items: umbrella, rain poncho/jacket
cleaning products: soap, grease remover
garbage bags
oil drain pan (find a cheap plastic one you can stuff inside your spare
tire)
for the newer Jeeps: a spare TPS and ignition coil
air tools
onboard welder
a secondary method for communication: cell phone, HAM radio, semaphore
flags, orange safety blanket, matches/cigarette lighter, mirror,
flashlight
did I mention water?

I paid a little over $100 (with shipping) for my '98 TJ service
manual from http://www.techauthority.daimlerchrysler.com/. Looking at
it now they are $90+shipping. I too thought it was going to be more,
but it wasn't. I also found that Ebay seems to sell them for pretty
close to the same price.

Subject: CJ-7 Wandering Caster Angles?????

I looked in the archives & couldn't find exactly what I needed so
hopefully I'm not being too repetitive.
Here's the story.... 85 CJ-7 4" Superlift with Revolvers, Jeep
wanders all over the place on the road, steering does not return to
center after turning. After replacing the bent & loose shackle
hangers, & spending weeks designing, borrowing, & building front
track bars & mounts, I finally sat down & did some research. The
verdict... I didn't install any caster shims when I did the lift.
DUH!!!!! Sometimes you can't see the forest because of all the trees..
Anyway I am prepared to install shims thisweekend & I have some
questions.
1) What is the proper angle to set the caster.
2) Where do you take the angle reading from. (I have an angle finder)
3) Looking from the front of the jeep. Is positive caster rotating
the pinion up to the floorboards or down to the ground.

Thanks in advance.

For distance your best bet is high & center (roof rack) but it may
not stay there long. I mounted mine on a custom made bracket to the
right rear bumper mount and made a support at the tail light that
keeps it from flopping around. I used a 4' Firestick 2 & it's about
4" above the roof at the top.

It's fairly easy to get a membership here. I'm not sure if anything is safe. Maybe we can share them with each other when we meet at the trails. Maybe a monthly/quarterly meeting where we exchange CD-ROMS or something (you must drive your Jeep to get a CD : ) ) I suppose we'll have to count on the laws of our country to keep these angry people away from us. I'm just curious, what do these anti-4-wheeling types use to get to the trails to plant spikes and cables? Geo Metros? Saturns?

Everyone be safe this weekend.

Rick,

I don't mind people in the club sharing GPS tracks and waypoints...that is one benefit the club can supply.

I would strongly urge NO one to post our tracks on a web based server. I personally do not want the diaper tossing, beer drinking, trash leaving type of 4 wheeler using the trails we do. Obviously, they already do, but giving them directions will only make it worse. Ask Scott Duety (sp) about his feelings on the AZ trails book he published, now that has been out for a couple of years.

Second....with the eco-freaks on the rise, I would also prefer for them to not know of my wheelin' spots. I don't need their cables, spikes, etc. put on our trails (and yes, they have done that). Burning car dealerships and houses is bad enough....don't give them directions to where we go Jeepin'.

OK....I'll step off my soap box now, and I hope you understand where I am coming from. I have heard other club members make these same comments so I know that I am not the only one that feels this way. ;)

I just got hold of a copy of Mapsource Topo. I know there are a few users of this software out there and was wondering if I could get a few routes/waypoints from anyone to start my collection. In fact if there are enough users maybe we could post the files in the files database.

Don't know about Cj caster angles in particular, but positive caster (what
you'll want) will be with pinion down (ie - the top part of the knuckle will
be raked back a bit and the bottom raked forward). You should be able to
take the reading from the flat part of the underside of the knuckle.
