Subject: Trailering a TJ behind an XJ

Hi All!

In the future after I modify my TJ I plan on
trailering my TJ out to the trails that are further
away I.E. Cinders, Moab, Colorado, etc.

I'm worried about the rear end sagging with all the
weight from the Trailer/TJ. With the XJ having rear
leaf springs I assume air bags are not an option. Any
ideas?

Thanks!

Jake

Pick up a York compressor in a junk yard and pick up a kit from Brad Kilby.
You'll need a tank, regulator relief valve and lines, but basically, it's
pretty simple. Check out the following link:

BTW, there are several models of Yorks. I believe there's a link on Brad's
web site that will direct you to the right one.

If you don't plan on ever having air conditioning, pick up a used Sanden
rotary compressor and get the A/C bracketry from a salvage yard. I think
TJs use these. I paid $75 (including a pretty good warranty, 1 year I
think) from Amer Auto Recyclers down on Kyrene and Chandler Blvd (?).
Beware that the rotary compressors don't have oil sumps like Yorks so an
external oiler will be needed. Use air tool/compressor oil for you
onboard air compressor.

Here's my setup (with notes)

FYI. The pre-season Slate River Cleanup is this Saturday, May 26 from
10:00am-2:00pm. Meet at the Salt River Recreation Area parking lot (my

river to collect the big junk. I don't know if they still do.

Roger,
I had the same problem: overstuffing the front tires. They dont seem to
make any frame-mounted tall bumpstops for the YJ. I thought about the
axle-mounted ones, and decided to make my own, I cut up one of my old
square tubes from the old t-case lowering kit, made them just long
enough to fit between the u-bolts. Tack welded them to the axle tube.
Havent rubbed since! Probably not the answer you were looking for...

Jake....the York is an A/C compressor. It is a slightly different
compressor than what would have come stock on your TJ....but it is still
driven by a belt off the engine. If you get the right York compressor, it
has a sealed lower end that is lubricated. It does not receive its lube
through the regrigarant like do most A/C compressors made these days.

Well since nobody has come through with the drive shaft yet, I am
going to excercise my next option.
I called Dick's today and they said, if I drove down, removed they
drive shaft in the parking lot they would exchange the shaft, put new
joints, switch the yoke and balance it while I was waiting (if I make
an appointment); all this for $140.
What do you all think? I really want to go out Saturday night and
give it another shot, maybe something on the west-side this time

Jim, sorry I got so busy at the shop today when you were there, but I did
some checking for you.....In the front D30 the SAME carrier is used from
3.07--->3.55 you need to change carriers if you are using 3.73--->4.88
Your TJ SHOULD have 4.11 with the 2.5 so you could use any gear set from 3.73
to 4.88..... the split for the rear D35 is 2.73--->3.31 and 3.55----->4.88
Hope this answers your question...If you need to, give me a call at the
shop.... GOOD LUCK!!!!

The 150 psi spring is good for tires but beyond the spec of air tools. Thats why I went with the 100 psi. These regulators are so cheap that you could carry one of each.

FWIW... I bought "Earls" brake lines (braided stainless-steel) from Don's
hot-rod shop in tucson. They come pre-cut and terminated with a generic fitting
that you can screw justabout any end onto. I took stock lines with me, told the
guy what length I wanted, and had him pick out the ends I needed based on the
stock line I had (picked one up at autozone for comparison, then took it right
back). My whole setup (front and rear...total of three lines) including one
extra fitting of each type was less than 80bucks!!! Takes a few minutes, but it
gets you exactly the length you want with a custom fit!!

I agree with Linda. You will pay a lot less and end up with
something that works just as well and will look better in your engine
compartment than a York . Sandens and most any stock ac compressor
work fine for on-board air.

The internal oiling of a York is a bit overrated IMO.

You dont have to worry about getting your 4x4's down to the river
because there will be thousands of other vehicles in your way.

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Doug Ballard is leading a Cherry Creek trail run on Saturday, May 26, 2001.

When: 5/26 to 5/27
Where: Meet in Globe on Sat at 8:30 at the gas station nearest the intersection of US60 and SR88.
Rating: 2.5+
Length: 2 days
CB Channel: 4

This is an exploratory run to check out a little used trail. Hiking will be required to see if it's passable. Some trail maintenence may be needed. An alterate plan may be to head up to the cooler spots (heading in from Punkin Center and hitting the exploratory trail on Sunday instead. It will depend on the temp. A well equiped Jeep w/ at least limited slips adviseable. Winch also helpful. Extra gas a good idea.

Fairly decent trail with great views and scenery.

I did think of that after I bought it, I have been thinking of a way to
make QD for the regulators, 100 for the air tools, and the 150 for tires.
Kind of have best of both worlds. I think putting a bead back on would be
easier with the 150, but I have not *yet* had to do it.

Hey Doug,
Last time I was at Cherry creek probably about 5 months ago, the first major
creek crossing was washed out badly, passable only in a Jeep. I'd like to
hear from you if it's still in that condition. Also there was a huge snake
in PB cabin..... That I won't go into.
I know where the ruins are on the west side of the creek but if you could,
get some gps waypoints for the trail heading out to the east. I've always
wanted to check out what lies out that way. I know the Indian reservation
is right there so I don't know if it's cool or not to go that way.

what did you use for an external oiler?, i have also heard that adding slick
50 instead of AC oil will allow you to not have to run an external oiler?
due to it being heavier oil. does anyone know anything about this?

I just got hold of a copy of Mapsource Topo. I know there are a few users of this software out there and was wondering if I could get a few routes/waypoints from anyone to start my collection. In fact if there are enough users maybe we could post the files in the files database.
