Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Bumble Bee Creek - Sunday, May 20, 2001
Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!
Blake Shepherd lead a trail run Sunday, May 20, 2001 across Bumble Bee Creek
Those attending were Jim L.(XJ), Jim F.(STK YJ), Rick Norman (XJ), Frank Clark (YJ), Scott Wade(YJ) myself in the CJ5 and a couple of others in a CJ7 and FS Bronco. Sorry I can't remember your names. We meet up at 9 AM just west of I-17 at the Bumble Bee exit. The trail starts about 4-5 miles west of I-17 on the Crown King road. This is a very challenging trail that is only about 1 mile long. It offers a very short section of rock obstacles with sand at the bottom. Looking at the obstacles, it doesn't look that challenging. A combination of well placed rocks and sand at the bottom is what makes it so hard. I started out first and had trouble on all three obstacles. You really need a front locker on this trail. Rick Norman and Hackle were able to pull through with no major problems. Jim L. chose a VERY tough line on the second obstacle and almost rolled over. The guy in the FS bronco ripped a sidewall on the first obstacle and the guy in the CJ7 broke a U-Joint in his DANA 30. To make a long story short, we ended up getting everyone except the Bronco through around 2 PM. At this point, almost everyone was tired and decided to call it a day. Jim L., Scott and I decided to play around on Raw Deal. We did those trails with no major problems. Afterwards, we ended up playing in the Agua Fria river. The water level was WAY up. Jim L. and I did some cool fording with the water level over our doors. All in all, it was a fun day!
Thanks goes to Hackle for the great pics.

Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!
Blake Shepherd is leading a DuPont Cabin trail run on Saturday, May 26, 2001.
When: 7 AM
Where: We are meeting at the Dennys on HWY 87 and Shea BLVD. The address is 17053 E Shea Blvd Fountain Hills AZ. You can get a map to this Dennys at www.mapquest.com.
Rating: 3.0
Length: All day Saturday and Sunday
CB Channel: 4
This will be a camping trip. We are meeting for breakfast at the Dennys mentioned above. Then we will caravan up. Heather and I are taking both our Jeeps for a little trail exploration. Our target will be the Dupont Cabin. However, nobody that is going has ever been there so we might not make it to the cabin. We are planning on spending at least saturday night and maybe sunday night as well. All are welcome to attend. I don't expect doing any hard core trails, so all jeeps can make it. I hope to see a good turn-out!
The trail to DuPont Cabin is very scenic. The trail leads to an old log cabin/line shack set in the cool pines of the Sierra Anchas.
Bring your camera, don't forget Water.
Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

IMOA,
Rocky Point is not really the place for little ones on Memorial weekend. If
you are staying anywhere near Sandy beach, there will be quads screaming by,
rails, jeeps, trucks, if it has a motor on it....it will be on the beach.
There will be children there, but it is more of an adult type crowd. I take
the kids on off holiday weekends and then I dont have to worry about them
getting injured. If given the option of not going or bringing the kids, I
would bring the kids.

I just got back from the dealer and got my fuel leak fixed. I took off my Tomken skid before taking my Jeep into the dealer and decided to get the Kilby rather than put the Tomken back on (the Tomken is pretty battle scarred). The Kilby was shipped today.
I was wondering if any of you that have already installed the Kilby would be willing to help me install it?

Subject: HELP! Dana 30 ring gear is BROKE
Hey guys/gals
After yesterday's deep water fun, I decided to change my diff fluid front
and rear. After taking off the front cover, I discovered that I now have TWO
ring gear teeth broken off!! Both broken teeth are side by side. I CANNOT
depend on the front axle to pull me through anymore.
So, does anyone have a 3.54 DANA 30 ring gear laying around that I can
have/buy??? This is for my 1980 CJ5. I don't need the pinion gear, just
the ring gear. I have a pair DANA 44's front and rear and will install them
soon. I just don't have the time/place to do it yet.
HELP!
thanks in advance

Missing 2 teeth and D44s on the horizon ? Run it.... Just inspiration
for the 44 swap.
I've seen worse run.
I would suggest unlocking the hubs on pavement, and fishing all the
metal hunks out of the gear oil.
Seriously.

Ring and pinion gears usually come in matched sets. You're probably
better off finding a set and replacing both at the same time.
I doubt it helps much, but I've got a set (3.73's) laying in my garage
off a '99 TJ. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't work on your Jeep though.

Subject: Re: Kilby Skid Install Help
The installation is really easy. Be sure to do a lot of driving the
week before you install it so you're tank's relatively empty. Each
gallon of gas will add roughly 8 lbs to the tank weight.
The hardest part for me was getting that friggin electrical connector
on and off. I just never have any luck with those things in the first
place, plus, there's some "safety" lock on there that really makes
things hard to figure out.
If you have a floor jack, that'll really help with the installation,
especially if the tank is full. Don't forget to dry fit the skid
without the tank before installing it. You'll more than likely have to
bend one of the arms a bit (use a BFH to tweak it into place) to get a
good fit.
Other than that, it's pretty straight forward. There's some stuff you
have to do (according to the factory service manual) before you remove
the tank. I can't remember off-had what the steps were, so if you
don't have a manual and need to know, I can send that info to you.
Good luck and have fun! (If you're in Tucson, I'd be happy to help).

I'm thinking of heading to Cherry Creek this weekend. I found an old trail
that leads down to the creek, with some nice remote camping spots right next
to the creek. The trail then heads up and out the east side of the canyon
and I want to explore it. It would involve some hiking, cause I'm not sure
how passable the trail is beyond the creek. I'm hoping that a side trail I
spotted heads to some cliff dwellings - we'll see. Will require some trail
work, depending how high up the east side of the canyon we go. Last time
there, I headed up about 1/4 of the way, but it was late and had to turn
around.
Looking for a relatively small group. Hard to say how difficult it may be,
but a well equipped Jeep w/ winch would be advisable.
Let me know if anyone is interested.

According to my calculations I am running about 100 RPM's or less
then with the stock gears and tires. Originally I had 215-75R15's
with 4.10 gears. Now I have 33X9.50X15's with 4.88 gears. I feel that
this is close enough to make an estimate of my gas mileage. I also
know of a gentleman who owns a 1997 TJ with a 4 banger and stock
tires that gets 23 MPG on the highway. I don't know why you guys down
in the Valley get such bad gas mileage, what are you guys doing?
Racing everyone from stop light to stop light? I will get my

Hello All,
This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

IMOA,
Rocky Point is not really the place for little ones on Memorial weekend. If
you are staying anywhere near Sandy beach, there will be quads screaming by,
rails, jeeps, trucks, if it has a motor on it....it will be on the beach.
There will be children there, but it is more of an adult type crowd. I take
the kids on off holiday weekends and then I dont have to worry about them
getting injured. If given the option of not going or bringing the kids, I
would bring the kids.

Did you recalibrate your speedometer? If not, your mileage claim is off by whatever percentage your speedometer is.

The results are in. I made my first road trip with the new gears last
week.

Yes! Be sure to mention you are a vjc member and you can get the club
pricing.
They (Mesa & Scottsdale) have internet accessible computers now and will
match club pricing offered by Macromotive. Regards.

I will get my
speedometer checked and repost then.

PS; If my speedometer is off, then which way would my mileage go?
