Subject: INFORMATION ON DOM TUBING. For all the do-it yourself people out there.
Talk to John Hunter at Hunter offroad in Tempe. His shop is North of University on Smith street, which is 1/2 way between McLintock and Price.
================================================== ====================
DOM means "Drawn Over Mandrel", and DOM tubing differs from steel pipe in that the outside diameter for pipe sizes less than 12 inches in diameter are numerically higher than its nominal size. DOM tubing has an outside diameter that is the nominal size. In plain english, Pipe sizes measure larger in diameter than the same size tube.
For a 2" diameter PIPE, the outside diameter is 2.375, or 2 3/8".
For a 2" diameter TUBE, the outside diameter is 2.00".
This comes into play when we start to use a TUBING bender (NOT a conduit or pipe bender), because the tube diameter needs to be close to the same diameter as the die on the tubing bender to keep the tube walls from buckling while bending. This also explains why tubing benders like those sold at Harbor freight do not work very well for making roll bars with.
You will want to buy SEAMLESS TUBING. Usually 1030 mild steel. Just ask for seamless tubing, tell them the diameter you want, tell them what you are making, and you'll get the right stuff.
The best place I have found so far is Arizona Steel, in the East valley near 40th street and I-17. In the West valley, you might call Glendale Steel.
Most cages I have seen use 1.75" or 2.00" diameter DOM seamless .120 wall tube for the main structure and 1.75" or 2.00" diameter DOM seamless .090 wall tube for everything else. Some cages have 1" braces in the corners for addes strength.
================================================== ====================
A QUICK NOTE ON WELDERS
If you are planning on building a cage, you really need to use a 220 volt welder (MIG, TIG, or ARC). A 110 volt 125 amp MIG welder will make a NICE LOOKING weld with flux core wire, but you are welding at the maximum material thickness (.120") that the welder was designed for. What happens is you might see a nice weld on the outside, but you may not be getting good enough penetration, and your cage could fail at a weld. A 220 volt MIG welder like a Miller Matic 185 or Lincoln PowerMIG 200 will weld up to 1/2" thick steel, almost assuring penetration.

As some of you may know, I now have my pipe bender, want to start

want a good look but My biggest concern is to keep the back seat safe
for when we start taking my Daughter fourwheeling with us, SO the
Design is the part that I am going to take lots of care on, but in
the mean time I have been reading articles (I.E. Alloffroad has a
good one and the new fourWheeler), My question is What exactly is DOM
tubing, where do you get it, Whats the Difference, and I am planning
on Using .120 wall 2" tubing for the additions to the cage, is that
too thin. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, and is it
reasonably priced to have a shop build the cage, FUll 6 point. I saw
someone on this group posted pics of their rig having the new cage
built, I was wandering if off the board you could shoot me a ball

I don't have any rock ights yet so it could be interesting.

Just want to know if there is an interest to do Crown King from Lake Pleasant on Friday night. Break in the rock lights for those with new ones and get some night experience for those of us less experienced. I am hoping that someone signs on that has done the trail and can lead, as I have only been the wrong way once. (started at CK). Thinking of starting about and hour before sunset and make it a lazy evening to CK. Then maybe in CK have a drink or two at the bar.
Any takers?

FYI--now that the Phoenix metro area cable subscribers get Fox News,
Arizonans will have the opportunity to see this edition of Vanishing
Freedom 2. When Vanishing Freedom 1 aired, it was not available to most
Arizona households. This, along with the Presidential election debacle
caused a huge demand (more than any other service ever) for Cox to
provide Fox News. Some of us still don't get cable, so crank up those
VCRs. See note below:

Subject: [az_vjc] AzVJC 3rd Anniversary (Aug 2001) Trail Run?
Hello All,
If I read the archives correctly, August 16th will mark the 3rd Anniversary
of the first AzVJC trail run. I think we need to have a trail run to
celebrate. Any suggestions as to the trail? The trail should be doable for
"stock" Jeeps so that all may participate. I know the first run was Crown
King, or we can go with FR-42, or the Coves; it'll still be a bit on the hot
side, so something in the mountains is probably better. Suggestions for the
date? August 18th is the first Saturday after the 16th, is this suitable?
Something like this will likely draw quite a crowd, so we'll want to break
down into "sub-groups" no matter which trail we choose. Probably 10-15 Jeeps
per group. So we'll need group leaders, any volunteers?

If you really have to have lights up on top, I'd suggest rectangular
lights tucked between the upper and lower rails of the rack. This
will minimize the overhead clearance and also provide some degree of
protection for the lights themselves. I'd also suggest a mount for
a hi-lift jack.

Gary,
You raise an excellent point.
I've got five 6.5 inch round driving lights mounted on the front of my
rack - also two on each side and three on the back facing rearward.
There is considerable glare off the hood. It can be very annoying.
Exacerbated in my case because the Jeep is white.
I've been tempted to paint the hood and cowl flat black. Because we have
only two seasons here - bright spring and very bright summer - I'm concerned
as to how much hotter the Jeep will run with the hood working as a
collector. But I may experiment this summer.
So yes, to the original poster, think twice about rack mount lights.

Subject: Fuel Leak???
I know it's leaking but I can't find it. I have a 98TJ with a Tomken skid. When I fillup with gas (not overfill, when the pump shuts off I'm done) I end up with a little gas in my skid. I checked all of the fittings, the top of the tank no results. I have checked the sides and don't see any indication that gas has been running down the tank or from the top. I would think i damaged the tank itself but it only happens when I fillup. It's got to be the overflow but I can't find any signs that there is a leak there either. After the fuel evaporates I'm fine until the next fillup. Anybody have a guess?????

Subject: INFORMATION ON DOM TUBING. For all the do-it yourself people out there.
Talk to John Hunter at Hunter offroad in Tempe. His shop is North of University on Smith street, which is 1/2 way between McLintock and Price.
================================================== ====================
================================================== ====================
A 220 volt MIG welder like a Miller Matic 185 or Lincoln PowerMIG 200 will weld up to 1/2" thick steel, almost assuring penetration.

too thin. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, and is it
reasonably priced to have a shop build the cage, FUll 6 point. I saw
