I did Rocker Panel pass back when I first got my Jeep back from Panama. One
of the first runs I did after putting in a 327 Chevy, also the first time I
broke a front U-Joint... and it wasn't even on the rocks, it was playing in
the sand afterwards! That was with a CJ-5, no lift, 31" tires, and LS Front
& Rear.

The trail going from Squeeze Rock to Rocker Panel pass looks to be pretty
difficult unless that water-hole has filled in with sand. If I remember
correctly, the two rocks came together at the bottom of the hole, with maybe
enough room for a small ATV to get through.

A couple of years back, both Scott Kruize (I think it was Scott anyway) and
myself did rocker panel pass... at the time; both of us were open in the
front, limited slips (factory) in the back and 33 inch tires. I'll be
honest with you; it looked really tough but it wasn't that bad. There
really is only one small section of trail which is difficult (4) and the
rest is (was) a piece of cake. I have some pictures I can post of that run
a couple of years ago if anyone is interested.

Any reasonable mod (and IMO, a 1" MM lift easily falls into this category)
that increases the clearance and or surviability of the vehicle is worth
while. Most folks do it to help negate drive lines induced vibes that
result from a moderate (ie., ~"2) lift since it does drop the tail shaft a
bit and can eliminate the drive shaft vibration (or reduce it to where it is
of no concern). The fact that one gets the oil pan up an additional 1" is
basically a side benefit that comes with the mod! ;)

Just an observation:

Question: Isn't a motor mount lift a good thing to do regardless of the
lift on a TJ since the engine appears to sit pretty low on the frame? I
have been on a few trail rides where stock TJs have come really close to
ripping oil pans. XJs seem to have the most clearance under the oil
pans.

I believe there is the Discount Tire Road Hazard for these tires as

Subject: Belt Keeps Coming Off!

I'd like to hit one of the night runs this weekend, but have been
having trouble keeping my serpentine (flat, 6 groove) belt on
lately. The original one chewed itself up about a couple weeks after
I had the fan clutch and front crank seal replaced (which involved
removing the harmonic balancer). The new belt I put on made it thru
a good 2hrs of hwy driving and a full day wheeling before coming off
the first time. Now it won't stay on more than 5 miles at a time!
It's starting to rip, so bought a new one...but what gives? The
belt "walks" forward off the water pump and alternator pulleys.
Ideas? Too loose? Too tight? Pulleys seem as in-line as they've
ever been/could be.

Thanks in advance,

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Mike Baney is leading an Ajax (Lower) trail run on Saturday, May 19, 2001.

When: Anyone up for a night run?
Where: Meet at Texaco? We can decide time and place to meet after everyone confirms.
Rating: 3.5+
Length:
CB Channel: 4

Lower Ajax wash crosses and continues along portions of the road to the Ajax Mine. It is the typical "wash;" for the most part you cross over and around the rock obstacles. There are a few 2 - 4 ft. waterfalls or narrow rock areas to find your way over or through but there are several by-passes. The wash is set among the rolling hills below the Ajax Mine.

This trail is fun and a challenge for the moderate 4-wheeler, although this trail is not for the inexperienced driver nor a stock vehicle.

A rear Traction Device, and 31" + tires are required..

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

Tom,

My guess is that one of your pulleys is misaligned... causing the belt to
walk off. Using a piece of wood or yardstick, you should be able to tell
which pulley is out of it's proper plane. Since this happened after
replacing the harmonic balancer... I would suspect that the crank pulley is
the suspect. Is the crank pulley tight? Did they shim it improperly?
Look at everything closely and you should be able to see the problem.

Regards,

Joe West

Check for cracks in the harmonic balancer rubber. When the rubber
cushion between the two pieces starts to deteriorate the HB will start
to wobble ever so slightly. Also check the bearings in the idler
pulleys. These will wear fast once the self-lubrication seeps out. I
had (almost) the same thing happen last January. I heard an odd noise
out of the engine compartment. Steve spotted the problem instantly. I
was able to drive it home.
