Anybody know if you can get across the river after coming in from the Beeline??
Anybody on these boards do the run on Feb 18, 2006 with Bill Stewart?? How about a trip report.:) :)
If the river can be crossed I can cut about 3 hours off the trip to get home.:D
Thank you

You can take the trail from the corral down to the lake, then head south on the trail beneath the powerlines (unsure what FS road number it is). As it leads down below the dam, there is a turnoff which drops you into the dry riverbed. From there you need to locate the crossing of the part of the river that's running. Given the 130-odd day dry spell, I would guess there's not much water being released from the dam, so the flowing part of the river may be dry/trickling at this time.
Once across the river, you simply follow the road back toward the dame and up the hill to the Bartlett Pay Station parking lot.
EDIT...
I just realized you were with us on the trip when we crossed the river, so you've done it :)

Check out these websites for most current streamflows:
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/current/?type=flow
or
http://www.az.gov/webapp/portal/ then click on 'Lake Levels'.
I've never done that route, but I'm itchin' to go. Hard to find time. Hope these sites help you out.

Thanks for posting those links, I had lost them.....
Looks like 700 cf/s or a bit over two feet deep. If this is the right station anyways........

I just checked the level for the Verde and it's close to 700 cfs below Bartlett. That is a lot of water, much higher than average. I've never crosssed the Verde, so maybe you should seek an experienced opinion. I'm also interested to hear if this is too high or what the limits are. I'll check back later.

Yeah, I did that trip and thought I had it on my GPS but I don't. If you remember the river crossing was very hard to find and Bill Stewart who knew where it was even passed by before he found it. :(
See some of the posts above about the water flow, only I don't know what numbers are crossable. Actually, since we haven't had any rain they are likely releasing more water than normal.
My wife :D wants to do a run Sunday and I would like to do that one again but she wants to be home rather early and going back out to Beeline and home that way adds 3 hours or more to the trip since I live in Cave Creek.
I probably couldn't find the crossing anyway, see below.

I recall after dropping into the dry part of the riverbed, we headed south (downstream) until a point where the trail was right by the river. There was a steep bank which appeared to have been used by other vehicles (the spot where you guys got video/pics of the first crossers), then the trail curved around to the right (west) with a rock wall on one side and the entrance through the weeds on the other. I'm sure I could find it but unsure I could make your trip. In that other thread, I posted a link to a topo showing the approximate spot of the crossing.

I recieved my first response to my inquiry about the last trip, it follows: :D
18 Feb run from Bartlett Lake to the Beeline.
There were 6 jeeps in the group.
Bill and Joe tried crossing the Verde Rive at the Horseshoe Dam without
success.
The river was running very hard.
Bill swamped his jeep up to his roof. Joe got stuck but was still
running.
Eric and I went into the river in my jeep and pulled them out with my
winch. Took 4 hours.
Don't recommend trying to cross right now until the slow down the water
being released from the dam.

I was on that trip but the two jeeps that were stuck were on the other side of this little island in the middle of the river and were pretty much out of site.
It's probably worth noting the two forest service guys who followed us in to identify the "crossing" weren't sure if that area was posted or not. They were pretty sure it was off limits and we might have all been in a position to get tickets... Not sure. I do have to say they were pretty cool about the whole thing and let us use one of their tow straps so we could anchor a couple of rigs together on our first attempt to pull the second rig out...

It's marked on the topos as a "Ford" and it certainly wasn't posted when we crossed last year.

I think the FS guys were clueless. Glad they were cool.
