Preparing for rear Waggy springs to stretch my wheelbase, I moved my gas tank up into the tub yesterday. Totally easy, cost $23 for fuel lines & bolts. I propped up the OEM skid plate up with four 15" pieces of 1 1/2" box (aquired free) and fastened thru the rear floor using 5/16" carriage bolts. I cut a 1 3/4" hole to re-plumb the fuel lines. The filler neck is in a good place.

Waggy springs should result in approx 100 inch wheelbase.

Moving a factory gas tank inside a vehicle isn't illegal, but the OEM tank wasn't designed to be in the same compartment as passengers. Be careful!

I know its Kool, but a good friend of mine, had one of the 36 gal racing tanks in his Corvette. He got rear ended by a drunk in a large Ford sedan and he and another buddie burnt to death. It made the front page of the Dallas Morn News. It really was horrible.

No street Jeeping for this Ratmobile. It's trailered to the dirt.
I know there is a risk and thanks for your concern. You folks are alright.

Maybe with the stretched wheelbase you'll be able to drive Collateral Damage with more than two tires on the ground :p :p

LOL Woody-
My 'sign shop' friend is fabbing me a custom 3 piece aluminum cover for my tank. I'll post up some pics when i get it.
BTW
The Waggy springs are in my garage now. Looks like if I center the perches on the pins with the small eyes forward, I'll gain about three inches to 97". (If I put the big eyes forward, I would get shorter)
PO had his perch and plate centering holes relocated for about another inch. 97" might be cool, is 98" better? we'll see. :D

There is a guy on JU that posted a similar "upgrade". He did cut out the floor on the tub and recessed the stock tank a few inches down so the top of the stock gas tank was below the wheel wheels and he was still able to extend his wheel base. Here is the thread (http://65.42.106.152/forums/showthread.php?t=716216).

As far as I know, the waggy springs can result in 2" WB increase per axle...so 4" if you run them front and rear.
Russ - are you running stock height waggy springs or the 44044 rancho's? If you're running the 44044's, are removing a leaf to keep the height down? And then...which leaf?
I have one set of 44044's in the garage waiting to go under my YJ at some future point. Looks like I can run them in the rear, in the direction to allow the 2" WB stretch, without running into gas tank contact issues. I've got an 8.8, Kilby tank skid, a 1" BL and slightly longer than stock shackles. Oh, Jeep is SOA also.
If you know something I don't about fitting those springs with a stock location gas tank...tell me know! ;-)
How about front end...can you just bolt them on without affecting steering?
