Cool.

We had a nice sized gorup consisting of three out of town rigs and two Phoenicians. From Colorado were Cody in a Bronco on 37s, Dale TJ on 38s, Zane TJ on 42s, our own Don Pryor Rubicon on 37s and myself TJ on 37s. Dale and Zane had their 18 month old daughter Maya. She was a real joy on the trail. She truly had fun on the rocks with a smile and laugh for us during stops.

We met around 9:00 am at Cottonwood Canyon Road, introduced ourselves and got ready to run. The sky was overcast but the temperature was nice. We headed out to Overdose via the roads. We did not take Ajax trail in the interest of time, although that group probably could have run the trail in nearly the same amount of time as the roads.

We hit OD ready to rock. This trail is rated as a 5.0. No major oops or carnage to report. Everyone was appropriately equipped for these trails (tires, axles, lockers) so there were no issues. We all winched up the big fall. Everyone also had spares -- more on that later. :D

We enjoyed a nice lunch at the old ranch ruins along Box Canyon Road around noonish.

After chowing down and relaxing for a bit we headed off to Bad Medicine -- rated at 4.5. Bad Medicine is somewhat technical like many Arizona trails with many opportunities to get hung up and bound up.

I decided to slip off the rock I had chosen to navigate upon. Then I decided my rear driveshaft u-joint needed punishing. It was a tough little bugger but after several attempts it succumbed to the abuse and beating, and broke. A trail repair ensued with one of the spare DS u-joints in my stash. The new one saw what I did to the old one so I am pretty sure it won't break anytime soon...

We rolled along toward the end of the trail without much event. The final obstacle is a good challenge and everyone had a good time on it. As trip leader I was obliagted to show them how it was done (who made that rule anyway?). No real drama I'm afraid. Don then tried to break his inclinometer by taking a rather off-camber line up the right. Dale got to the top without much trouble then broke a Warn Dana 44 hub (we think) on the passenger side. She 3-wheeled out of the top. Everyone made it up unassisted and had a story to tell about it.

That's about it. We had a great day with minimal carnage considering the trails we ran. We met some new friends and enjoyed the trail and the Arizona outdoors.

Pictures are on their way so stay tuned.

Barry

Woo.

I tried to tell them that this was just the access road to the real trail...

The li'l rig that could, or at least did this time.

Tight turn at the top.

Cool. Nothing broke.

Don giving his inclinometer a work out. Pretty sure we heard it go "ting".

He said he weren't a fearin'.

But he did make it up. Guess the obstacle wasn't hard enough for his big boy rig.

Cody starting on up.

Last batch...

Cody clearing the top.

Getting a gander athis undercarriage.

Nice flex JeepDiva!

Zane satrting his ascent.

Good line.

Mmmm hmmmm....where's the obstacle again?

Nice flex from his home-built suspension. Four link front and rear.

That be it folks!

Nice pics. Can't wait to hear (read) what they thought of their first AZ experience (did they bring a laptop to post from the hotel?). Wish I could have joined you but I had fun prepping some rooms for paint (not).

No computer, unfortunately. They might have one at one of the hotels -- not sure.

They seemed to enjoy the trails. I asked Zane and he said that OD and BM would be among the harder trails from a CO perspective. He noted that our trails were narrow and technical -- a fair assessment.

Thanks for sharing the pics. Saw you guys filling up at the Gold Canyon McDonalds/Texaco, and then saw the CO crew coming North on 79 while I was heading South (black SOA YJ). Earlier in the week, I had planned on joining you all, but decided to do an easy run through Elvis with a friend of mine and his mild-build TJ. We both had our little ones with us, and I brought the wife for this run as well. Just wanted something easy and relatively quick to ensure getting back in time for kick-off.

Good to see you made it through without toasting yet ANOTHER front shaft or joint! ;-) Was a nice day for wheeling!

This waterfall wasn't bad when I was 103". (although I didn't have the motor to get up it.) When I was 101" Lots of pucker. If I were under 100" I think I would pull cable before the front wheels even hit the wall. ;) :D

Looks like good fun!

I ran that fall on 33" tires the first time and did exactly what you see in that picture. You gotta climb the thing before you can winch because it is about as vertical as vertical gets. You just rest on the rear bumper is all. :D That fall is all about wheelbase, tires and persistence for sure.

We had a blast.

Last waterfall, Far right line there was a rock that made it very technical. It was in the pictures until red TJ. Where did it go??? Was it put back.? Not to sound rude but why was it moved. If you can not do the line with it there do the left line with all the rocks in the hole.

Not sure what rock you are talking about and no you don't sound rude. We neither moved nor stacked! Also, there are two red TJ's, which one?

Nobody moved any rocks -- certainly not purposefully. I do not recall any rocks being moved in the course of driving the fall. You'll have to point it out.

It wasn't moved Todd, it is camera angle which you can see by referencing other things in the photos.

Actually...I may have to take that back. In examing the rest of the pictures taken from a similar angle (the top) it looks like it did move. I assure you that it was not moved purposefully. I had not noticed that before (I went up first) but it does kind of look like it is in a different place when viewed from the top in approximately the same position. I would have thought I would have remembered a rock that size moving...

Heck...I can't tell...Want to take a hike out there tomorrow and check on it and adjust if need be? :D

Haha...no...believe me...no fan of stacking here. Although, I tried real hard to beat up a rock with my rear DS -- the rock won.

I moved a rock with my belly pan on the Anaconda rock garden. It got caught up underneath me and literally followed me where ever I went! Damn thing. Pet rocks went out in the 70s. Guess nobdy told it.

Well if you think that any of us individualy or collectively moved that rock, you can put down your crack pipe, because we didn't. I suspect that is weighs in well past 2,000 lbs. That said, I have some strong-*** rockers on my rig and they might have pushed it over as I took that line.

Look's to me it got pushed over when the Jeep took that line....no probs.

Everyone always *****es at me when i kick/move rocks under full throttle spinning assaults.

More to the point...why didn't you unstack...hmmm?

We talked abut destacking. It was getting late in the day and would have taken a lot to get it to where it should be versus the amount of time before dusk. Next time out I will partake in derocking that fall. It was really filled in at the bottom.

We really need to get out on the first fall on Anaconda and get those huge boulders back up into the rock garden from whence they came. It'll take winching to do that. Not sure who the morons are that pulled them down into the base of the fall but they ruined that obstacle. Dimwits.

I am not here to be rude, but if we always make excuses why we do not derock, the problem just keeps getting worse. I know every time I go wheeling it seems it is all I do is derock so there is a little challange before I do the obsticles. Even if you took 10mins, you can derock alot of the little crap that gets throw in the holes and ledges in a few mins. If we want to keep the tough traols tough we all need to make an effort not excuses.

Have a great day

I am not saying spend hours derocking, but when everyone is standing around watching, if you see a area throw rocks out. Seems some have time to throw rocks in the holes but never anytime to remove them, or no time even if no one in the group threw rocks in.
Actually no matter where I am at I will remove rocks. It only takes a few mins. Remember alot of us taking a few mins adds up real quick. Matbe this way we can stay ahead of the stackers that do not have time to derock but have plenty of time to stack.;)

Outside of Barry, no one had run the trail before, so only Barry knows the extent of the rock stacking. Other than myself, the rest where from out of state and didn't drive down here to stack or unstack rocks.

Not sure, that Barry or myself is making any excuses here. The rocks will be there tomorrow, if not then somebody beat us to the unstacking. From what I could ascertain, there seemed to be many rocks stacked [dunno just my thought] and there were some big ones, some rocks that it would take more back than brain to move. We had a woman with a baby, her husband and his Dad, Barry and myself. Not sure, whose back was up to unstacking, but mine was not, it gave out many years ago.

Furthermore, you don't need to belabor the point, Barry mentioned it and we are all aware of it. We certainly don’t like it anymore than you do. There are a lot of things I don’t like in this world, I try to fix some, try to influence others to fix some and 60 years of living has taught me I can’t fix them all in spite of trying for years than I care to admit.

Nuff said!

Great trip report and pics! It was nice to meet Barry & Don. You guys were great hosts and made sure us Colo folks had fun. Great trails as well. They definitely rank up there with the tough ones back home.

I would say the AZ trails we did were narrower than most of the CO trails. With Zane & I having wider axles, we found ourselves needing to take creative lines to fit through in several places. Like that squeeze near the beginning of Bad Medicine...I was watching the first 3 guys barely squeeze through it and wondering how the heck I was going to fit my jeep through. I had to take the high line like Zane did. The trails also had more waterfalls. Most of the tough stuff in CO seems to be more of the relentless bouldering variety with fewer waterfalls.

I'll work on posting up reports from our other days. Have to get the 35mm stuff digitized since the digital cam refused to cooperate.
