I've got a super 44 kit in the rear and want to replace my Detroit with a spool. I can't find one with 33 splines. Does anyone know where I can order one or have one special ordered?
Also, if interested, I'll have a D44 33 Spline Detroit Locker for sale! :D
Thanks, Kit

I'm curious as to why you're switching. Is there anything gained?
Sorry; I have no answers for you.

Detroit Lockers should not be used on the black top. I and my friend installed them at the same time, and both our trannies started getting ground down syncro gears.
I've since then learned from Grady that this is very common with the Detroit on pavement. For now, this is my daily driver. I can't be killing my gears with it.
However, I'm in the market for a truck and trailer and turn my junk into a trailer queen. With my Atlas t-case, I don't need a switchable locker in the rear.
Hope that clears it up for you. Thanks for asking. - Kit

I know you dont want a switchable locker. But I think your only choices are the Detroit and the ARB. I say ARB.:)

Call the fire department, smoke is coming out ears....you got me thinking here. What is a detroit doing that is damaging your tranny that a spool will not do? Correct me if I'm wrong, but a detroit locks up under tourque, so anytime there is torque on it, it is "spooled". Right? So then the only difference is when you coast around a corner your DL is unloaded and you have differencial action. How often do you coast around a corner? I don't know about you, but for some odd reason I like to try to make my tires cherp. Seems to me that a spool would be harder on a tranny, with no diff action, then anything else. Seems like a lot of money for nearly the same results. Even more so if you are planing on it becoming a Queen.
Funny all this coming from a guy that just removed a amc20 with a detroit for a dana 44 and a spool! Just my .37 cents.

Could be the shock loading and unloading-- that is hard on things. But, I don't think it is that severe or at least I sure don't feel it that badly on my 5 speed/4.0L TJ.
I am not sure about the Atlas statement unless it is twin sticked and one plans to run a switchable locker up front and then FWD on the street, then it makes sense.

Now I'm really confused. Nothing new! :D
I disagree with the notion that Detroits will ruin your synchros on pavement. Grady is my friend, but I just don't find this to be so. Plenty of people run them on the street as well as Lock Rights and such with no problems. If the Detroit all the way in the rear is ruining your tranny; why isn't it effecting your T-case? See what i'm getting at here? Also; if you are going to make it a trailer queen anyways; keep the Detroit. Keep in mind that NASCAR uses Detroits on paved ovals and the only positions that pay are the winning ones. ;)

Yeah, Grady's a good guy, but we all have our opinions and believes. In this case, the syncro gear problem started immediately after installing our lockers.
So, let me be more clear as to the symptoms: When shifting, the springs in the locker flex, which is why I get the clunking between gears. I now cannot shift without grinding gears unless I pause in neutral as I go to the next gear.
With the Atlas installed, and in 4 low, first gear, I go lurch, pause, lurch, pause, etc. which is a real pain in the ***.
I've go 10K miles on the locker and check the wear pattern of my gears every time I change my gear oil.
So, if someone has an answer for these problems, bring ‘em on! :D

I have had the same symptoms for three years with no ill effects. It's not actually the Detroits fault, but a byproduct of positive engagement from a geared locker. Both LockRights and spools will do the same thing. You just need to adapt and shift slower. Your motor is all revved up to go and you pop the clutch only to have your tranny output hit the resistance of larger tires, deeper gears and a locker rear diff. Auto trannies tend to cushion the blow versus the manual trannies. Just drive it and I assure you that you will be fine. Don't get cheap on the fluids as they help with shock loads and wear. I prefer Mystic diff fluid and it really quiets an auto locker down. Keep the rear tires within 1lb PSI of each other with an accurate digital guage.
I have put thousands of road trip miles on my TJ with Detroit with no failures. I drive to and from Moab and Co. each year including some hard wheeling. I'm sure it's happened, but I have yet to see or hear of a manual tranny going bad due to a Detroit. Mine grinds from 2nd-3rd only and I've learned to shift it accordingly. In changing my tranny oil; I've never had any signs of abnormal metal wear in the fluid. Those manuals are much tougher than you give them credit for. Just drive it! ;)

I still don't see how the synchros are getting damaged by the locker. The clunk is presumably from the locker. There is added driveline lash with a locker. But by the time the lash is absorbed the transmission is already in gear.
If there is an excessive clunk from the tranny during shifting, that sounds to me like technique. Anyway, I and a generation of others drove cars with Detroits in the 70s and 80s on the street with gobs of horsepower and traction and never an issue with the tranny.
If the syncrhos are worn I highly doubt it is because of the locker. Other things being equal, synchros typically fail from shifting without using the clutch (either at all or properly) or inadequate lubrication.

I just thought of something here...Is this Kit Carson? If so; I believe you have a TBT lift. I had that clunking with my TBT lift and it was always a bad cartridge joint above the rear diff. It's the cartridge joint sitting in the rear diff cradle.
As far as the lurching; do you have a hand throttle and are you slipping the clutch as needed? "Slip that clutch until you can smell it" is what Hackle told me on my first trip out. ;)

Yeah, I'll be redoing the entire rear of the lift anyway. Switching to 4 link and relocating the CAs at the axel, and installing Ford shock mounts.
I purchased the chip to turn my cruise control into a crawl cruise control. It will also make the other set of buttons winch control. Learned about it on Stu’s site. I’ve just haven’t had the cahonas to install it yet because there are about 50 wires to the damn thing and I’m by no means an auto electrical expert.
And, yes, this is Kit, Diablo, Black Hole. I've starting calling my black junk, Black Hole because money gets drawn to it and then just disappears...
And technique? Ouch. Dude (xFallen), you must not make many friends! :D

The statement was not an accusation nor a suggestion that you didn't know how to drive. It was offered as a plausible alternative, is all. Depersonalize it for a moment and you may agree. How would you go through the numerous thingsthat could be going oon? Many statements singled out and taken out of context can be made to sound different than the original intent.
Anyway, it wasn't a shot.

Yeah, and if I had a carrier with 33 splines, I'd do that in a heart beat.
I've been in contact with the company that used to make 33 spline spools for Superior. Seams Superior JUST stopped getting them because they only sell two a year. Hell, I could have just increased their sales by 33%!! They?re supposed to get back with me this morning.
Anyway, I'm actually thinking of disassembling the Detroit and welding the mother together!:D
