Here is what I would do.

Start with a Willys pickup somewhere between 1947 and 1960 (like that body style and want split window)

Mods

convert to 12 volt
SOA
8 Lug Dana 60's front and rear to share bolt pattern with tow vehicle
Detroit locker in rear (drums)
Selectable locker in front with high steer conversion (disk brakes)
power steering
hi steer conversion
Chevy 383 Stroker
700R automatic transmission with lock up converer and overdrive
Atlas 4 speed transfer case (10:1)
Air conditioning
Roll cage
5 point harnesses
37" tires

Dreaming like this make me want go buy another one and start over. Currently I don't have 60's, front diff is open, stock manual transmission and transfer, 383 is only a 350 so far, no A/C, no roll cage, no seatbelts, 33" tires. I have $9000 in it so far. Might make the buget of 20K but will run as is for now, except paln cage soon.

oh my....$20000 and for some reason I'd rather buy geo metro, stick it on a samurai frame, drop in a crate motor feeding 1-1/2tons on 46" tires...that'd be a fun mini monster truck!

Wow, where would you find one of those? Couldn't buy the transmission and transfer case for that I would think.

I'll just keep my XJ and fix it the way I want:

D44 HP front axle with high steer, OX locker and 4.88's with a 65" wms-wms.

D60 rear, with detroit, matching gears and width, and disc brakes.

Sleeve the "frames" with 3/16" and then add a full cage.

T&T Customs Y-link front suspension and belly pan (8" lift)

RK coil over rear suspension (8" lift)

Atlas 4:1

35-37" TrXus MT's on some type of bead lock rims (haven't decided which).

Those should cover the big stuff. Most of which will be done in my buddies garage for cheap.
