I told you so.
It about time.
I'm not suprised.
Combat brings out the best and worst.
U.S. Brings Back the .45
January 27, 2006: After two decades of use, the U.S. Department of
Defense is getting rid of its Beretta M9 9mm pistol, and going back to
the 11.4mm (.45 caliber) weapon. There have been constant complaints
about the lesser (compared to the .45) hitting power of the 9mm. And in
the last few years, SOCOM (Special Operations Command) and the marines
have officially adopted .45 caliber pistols as "official alternatives"
to the M9 Beretta. But now SOCOM has been given the task of finding a
design that will be suitable as the JCP (Joint Combat Pistol). Various
designs are being evaluated, but all must be .45 caliber and have a
eight round magazine (at least), and high capacity mags holding up to
15. The new .45 will also have a rail up top for attachments, and be
able to take a silencer. Length must be no more than 9.65 inches, and
width no more than 1.53 inches.
The M1911 .45 caliber pistol that the 9mm Beretta replaced in 1985, was,
as its nomenclature implied, an old design. There are several modern
designs out there for .45 caliber pistols that are lighter, carry more
ammo and are easier to maintain than the pre-World War I M1911 (which is
actually about a century old, as a design). The Department of Defense
plans to buy 645,000 JCPs.
SOCOM will, with input from other branches, handle the evaluation and
final selection. This will take place this year, and if the military
moves with unaccustomed alacrity, troops could start getting their JCPs
next year. But don't hold your breath.

I figured that the military was going to do this sooner or later with all the speacial combat units requesting the 1911 style 45. I also like the 1911 style 45. Although my next gun purchase is probable going to be the Gap 45 from Glock. I know this kills all the 1911 die hards out there.

The ONLY thing that surprises me is that it took them 20 years to change back. There is absolutely no way I would my life to depend on a pea shooter like a 9mm. I loved my 1911! Best damn pistol made for close in shooting. Easy training fro the troops, easy aiming, easy cleaning, easy to maintain.
But I would always take the largest caliber that I can confidently shoot anyways.
My personal handgun of choice and one that is nearly always by my side and has been for many years is .357 ruger GP100 loaded with 158 grains of premium persuasion.

GLOCK 21 is the Fullsize .45...the G30 is the compact...taken tongue in cheek as its the size of the G19 pmm, G23 .40 and G38 .45 GAP
This one is concealable and can carry the G21 13 round mags as backups..

Hell, wish that I could shoot like that! My dad is good like you. I don't practice enough to put shot groups like that. I still have fun though.

One afternoon and I can have you shooting that GLOCK better....practice and dry fire will get you even better...
One thing to keep in mind...is if you dont have the training ingrained in your mind...you will not have any data to pull from when TSHTF....good training and lots of practice are paramount to having everything go your way in the unfortunate event of a life threatening moment.
Anyway...don't wanna scare the kiddos...LOL....
Simon...Ill PM you a FAQ that will help you with that GLOCK...

Talk about knock down power 9 v .45, years ago I used to shoot in a few practical matches and one day a couple of guys showed up with high capacity 9mm's. We were supposed to double tap each target and move on, and somewhere in the run reload and shoot some more targets. The nines with 15 round capacity were going bang, bang, ting, bang bang as fast as they could and eventually would loose count of how many actual hits they had, therefore being disquailified on each run. The old .45 acp shooters were going kapow twang, kapow twang at a reasonable, controlled pace and actually hitting the targets.:D With the .45 acp I could reload my brass until the head stamp was blurred. You only get a couple of reloads out of 99mm brass cuz the cup pressure is so high!
Can you tell I'm biased??
PS Glad to see them coming around again. Wonder how the 9mm would have done against the doped up Moro warriors?

I first learned to shoot a pistol in 1970 at the age of 10. My father (USMC) had just been reverted from Captian to CWO3 after his tour in Vietnam (tanks) and made a range officer. The weapon of course was the .45. Continues to be my favorite hand gun and the one I shoot the best (didn't quite make expert at 10). I believe this caliber to be the best choice for a Military weapon.
That being said dad who sold guns for a living when he retired from the Marines and I don't recommend one for a civilian house gun. Service .45 will kill your intruder, go through your wall, and hit god knows what or who at your neighbors house.
For a house gun I have the Browing High Power Smith and Wesson .40 that is subsonic and stays in the person I aim at.
Very glad to see the return of the .45, I don't even want to tell you what Dad thinks of the M-16. He caried a M-1 Grande or a M-14 to give you a clue.

I have carried my 1911 for years, and I have competed (casually) with the PP group out at South Mountain.
When you go back and forth from paper to steel, the guys with 9's always had to hit the steel 2 or 3 times to get it to fall.
I've always hunted coyote with my 45, and it has always been a 1 shot 1 dog gun. (yes I wait till they are close, but since I used to shoot steel open sight revolver for years, my idea of close enuff for a pistol may vary from yours....)
My sons all carry 45's, and we have silhouette and steel that we practice with on a regular basis.
My wife likes her Colt Police special (4" bull barrel, recessed muzzle, custom Pythin action), and she can "walk the dog" for almost 150 feet with it.
I use the magsafe rounds for home, and I have tested them with many different wall compositions, and they really do stop. If I had a choice for defense at home (you use what you have at hand :)) I would use the old pump shotgun with flechette, but thats me

I happen to have the 1911 Mdl Colt stamped US that my Dad was issued when he came into the Army and carried it for 30 years. I then carried it in Nam.
The Colt 1911 design is over 100 years old and still being sold in huge quanties, beening copied and still works today.
It will be interesting to see what a new design for the stand by .45 will be. That said, the bar is high, real high. The 1911 is one of the best firearms [pistol] ever developed.

We had some custom tuned 1911s when I was in and evaluated the M-9. We hated it and continued to use old slabsides. I have carried a 9mm and found it to be quite satisfactory when loaded with good bullets(meaning-115gr hollowpoints@ 1300+ fps). But I love the old 1911 and carry one to this day. Glocks are an outstanding weapon, just not my favorite. BTW Antman, those pepper popper steel targets are supposed to be set so that a CENTER hit with a full power 9mm will make it fall. Have the Rangemaster check 'em.

My wife carries a 9mm. It is smaller in your hand than my S&W 4006 or my Springfield Arm. .45 1911A1, but I will never switch from the trusty .45. I love it!
