View Full Version : Sheesh... you thought running into a tree was bad!

So... yesterday, my son and I are in our driveway working on pulling the drivetrain in his corvair to do some work on the transmission... when all of a sudden we hear an engine rev loudly as if someone floored the gas pedal in our cul-de-sac.
I look up to see someone in a truck speeding pedal to the metal at the entry to our cul-de-sac. I'm thinking angrily; damn it, SLOW DOWN... there are kids around here.
But this dude, staring straight ahead is now moving 40 mph straight towards my next door neighbor's house and as I watch in disbelief, he runs through their front yard, probably doing between 40-50mph and SLAMS like an explosion through their block wall and into their pool.
I tell my son to dial 911 and we run into my neighbors back yard. The roughly 16 year old kid (white, mormon, my son knows his brother) is crawling out the rear sliding windown in the truck saying "Where the F*** am I". I look him over quickly, and it looks like he has only cuts and scrapes. I tell him to sit down and then I check the truck for passengers (the front end of the truck is underwater)... there were none.
The police arrive quickly, and start questioning the kid... but he is in somewhat of a stupor. I couldn't tell if it was drug induced, shock, or whether he has some sort of a medical problem (and hence, why he said he blacked out)
One thing I can tell you for sure... If he had blacked out headed towards the corvair that my son and I were under... we wouldn't be here.
It looks like the kid is okay and for the life of me... staring straight at him as he ripped through our cul-de-sac; I swear it looked like he did it on purpose.

whoa.... I hope the pool is okay. Did he have insurance? (j/k, lol)
Weird how he navigated through the small front yard (between the house and the trees) and hit that fence, too bad he didn't hit a palm tree, that would have stopped him.

That is exactly what makes me think that there is a possibility this wasn't an accident. There was one clear path through the yard to the fence... he found it. He could have been lucky... but... who knows.
Why anyone would try to ram a block wall at high speed on purpose is beyond me... ESPECIALLY when there could have been people in the back yard.
I suspect the police will sort it out. The kid was young enough that the truth is likely to come out.

Not a political thread, but maybe a religious thread....I like the way it was pointed out that he was a white mormon. Like "Oh, that explains it". Watch out, we're all that crazy.....sorry, I wonder if it would have been noted if he was catholic (or any other religion for that matter). I don't what to start anything by this post, and I don't think Joe ment any harm, just my thoughts.

Joe,
Understand how you were able to tell he was white, but I gotta ask, how do you know he was a Mormon? Or did he say something 'Holy Jehovah, where am I?' and he was dressed in a white shirt and dark pants.
Who knows, maybe the devil make him do it.

Maybe he was just making sure everyone knew it wasn't a drunk illegal worker, so his thread wouldn't get twisted into a political nightmare like the last crash post! :) Is that why? Joe?
Savage it sounds like his son knows a family member too!

There are forms of epilepsy that don't present in the usual way most people are used to.
Instead of the very visible grand mal seizure there is only a blank stare and little or no repetive movement during the seizure. The patient wakes from this with no idea what has been happening during the seizure.
If this is the case the kid would look awake and appear to be stareing right at you and see nothing, hear nothing, remember nothing.
In truth I hope the kid did it on purpose instead of guessing right.

Last year, I had a neighbor come down my street, witnesses said it looked like she floored it and startet veering off to the right...She went right thru my brick post/mailbox and about 35' of fence... Totaled her little Toyota. She got cuts and bruises and they said came out of the car the same way.. "Where am I?, What happened? ? Cops told me she had an epeleptic seizure. I was told that flooring the gas happens because of the way the muscles can act during a seizure ..

Wow that's amazing. Glad no one was hurt.
Hey, if you are prone to seizures that cause you to floor the gas pedal until you hit something, maybe you shouldn't be driving.

Hey, if you are prone to seizures that cause you to floor the gas pedal until you hit something, maybe you shouldn't be driving.
There are plenty of meds out there that control the seizures provided they are taken daily. There are also drug combos out that that can make perfrctly healthy people seize.
With your train of thinking, it's like you're saying someone that has been fighting depression with proper meds daily shouldn't drive cause they may just "snap" and run down a bunch of people in a cross walk.

D*mn Joe that's messed up.
All of the comments about medical conditions, who really knows, but hopefully whatever caused him to drive like that won't ever happen again. Accident or not if he would've hit someone he would be awaiting his new apartment out in Florence Junction right now.

Well...:)
If taking meds can almost guarantee one won't have a seizure, then fine. But if you're going to have seizures either way and your seizure has the effect of making you stiff like a board so that you floor the gas pedal in your 3000 lb missile without any control, then yes, I think one needs to consider driving might not be a good idea.
I'm not sue-happy but if someone who regularly has seizures injures or kills someone in my family because of one of these regular seizures, someone is being sued and it might just be the state that issued the drivers license. We can't just roll the dice and hope someone with regular serious seizures won't have one while behind the wheel.
Then again, if the seizure was a fluke thing due to a medication or unknown illness, that's different.
