WHEN: Saturday, January 7th, 2006, air down at 8:00 am
WHERE: Large staging area off Table Mesa Road
TRAIL: Predator and whatever else we can fit in
RATING: 4.5
For this run PLEASE have:
.35" tires or better
.two working lockers
.spares are a good idea
.a working winch is highly recommended
.neglect for straight sheet metal
There are four major obstacles one of which does not have a bypass. I know that some may be able to do this trail on 33s or without lockers. That is all good, and I get it. However, I would prefer to not do too much work if it can be avoided. A rig properly set up for this type of trail will better assure a smooth run. That will leave opportunities open to do other trails that day.
If we have more than 8 capable rigs show we may opt to split into two (or more) groups in the interest of keeping things moving.
If spare seats are available ride-alongs may be possible.
After Predator we may do something more challenging (depends on group) or more moderate (again, depending upon group) or nothing at all (depending upon carnage). :D
Barry
PS. I am fully aware that with the above being said I have pretty much assured that I will be the one that breaks and has to get dragged through the trail. I understand irony, Murphy, and the Universe's unyielding desire to humiliate me at every opportunity. :D

I just got the new lift installed and I'm ready for Predator. I don't meet the tire requirements but my wheelbase is a few inches shorter than yours so I think I'm golden:

With regards to my "other" Heep, I'm going to try to get the SYE done this weekend and get the 8.8 in either Sunday or Monday. We'll see as I have to come in the office a bit to make a deadline Monday. With regards to that broken body mount if Grady has time he's going to attack my floorboard with the plasma cutter and try to access that bolt through the floor. He may not have time to do it this time around. After I know when I'm going to have my Heep I'm going to get it to Brian's ASAP to get my cage done. Depending on how it goes this weekend I'm going to try to schedule with Brian the following weekend. We'll see.

Bill and wife, Don, Kevin and myself and friend Tony met at TM around 8:00 am. We ran Predator then dropped down to Lower Terminator. I ran the lower end of Anaconda. Tony and I ran Lower Raw Deal on the way back to the parking area so Tony could have a shot at driving the rig after been such a helpful passenger all day.
Predator was a hoot. I managed to get through each obstacle without too much drama The rig is working great. Everyone else did great too and took the lines that made most sense for them.
The water pump on Bill's 455 Buick started making nasty noises. After diagnosing it Bill and Don managed to make it quiet so Bill was able to continue. Most of us took the opportunity to grab a bite to eat.
We entered Lower Terminator and stopped at the entrance of Anaconda to check it out. Bill, the consumate instigator that he is, pretty much forced me to drive the rig up Anaconda to scout it out. The idea was to just check out the first fall and either turn around or whatever. The long and short of it I tore the ears off the passenger side stub shaft before I got to the first real obstacle. There are ledges along the way but we had not hit the first fall. So, we popped in the spare shafts and carried on. Gotta love shafts with stubs and u-joints installed ready to go.
The first fall was almost anti-climactic. I don't even think a tire spun on the first fall on Anaconda. Bill can comment more. It looks pretty stacked. Don't underestimate it though, but it was fairly straightforward. Bill's also a good spotter. There is a new bypass cut into the left side of the big squeeze just before the first bail-out point. I tried to flop the rig there by taking a silly line. I bypassed the squeeze and headed back to Lower Terminator to join the rest of the gang and continue on as a group rather than try and run the rest of Anaconda. That'll be the target of another run, but now I know it can be done by my rig in its current form, no problem. Just need to carry spares. :D
Lower Terminator was uneventful but fun. I was extremely pleased with the way the rig handled the Terminator obstacle. Seemed to climb right up and over without much fanfare (on the right line of course).
Bill had a transmission shifter cable break on him but he was able continue on just without the ability to shift. His rig works great.
Kevin and I both had to be strapped off a silly little obstacle that high centered each of us and provided almost no traction on either side of the obstacle. Other than that nobody needed much in the way of assistance.
It was a great day of wheeling. I think everyone enjoyed the time on the trail -- I certainly did.
Thanks Bill for taking the lead through Predator, walking me through Anaconda and helping with the trailside repair.
I will post up some pictures as I get them.

Great run today guys.
I was hoping it would turn out a little less troublesome for me, but I'm SURE that there really is a light at the end of this fawking tunnel, and not another train!!
It's been a long year, but I have to believe the breakage is almost over...
Barry seems to have mastered a comfy seat at the helm of his rig. Even my wife noticed he was a madman for the rocks!
She also noticed he was a little "Stubborn"... Those are her words Barry, I actually interpreted them to mean "Focused"...
Truly a pleasure wheeling with you and Tony... Next time, charge him a couple Cigars for the Biatch seat, so we can all smoke one!!
Lost TJ: Kevin's Yoda is what it is.
However, In this particular case, I'd have to say the performance today had allot to do with the DRIVING, and not the vehicle. (With no discredit to his vehicle, of course). He consistantly surprised me throughout the day.

I was by no means making fun of his rig. I like it alot. I have wheeled with Kevin many of times and we first started wheelin rocks together about the same time. I have probably wheeled with him more than i have wheeled with any others in this club. I remember when it was IFS still. He is a great driver and has taught me alot. I was merily stating "it looks like it did good". Just like Barry, i too have had to be yanked out by Kevin's rig. I wish i could of been there today too. I had to work until 9am though. Now Kevin can show me through there now. :D

Hopefully you have the kinks sorted out. Building a rig from scratch has got to be a major undertaking -- I can't imagine all the details -- and yours is reall purdy. :D I think you need bigger axles though so when can I come over and get those ones?
Stubborn? Me? Naw....well...okay...yeah. She has it right. There were a couple of obstacles that I knew damn well I could do, I knew the lines, I knew the rig was capable, but just couldn't pull off as readily planned. The stubborn or "focused" attitude pays off though. :D
Tony's a good guy and really enjoys getting out there. We'll have to make time to burn a stoagie on Tony's dime next trip out. Now and then we go on a more scenic trail that has stuff his stock S10 will handle. Which, by the way, is about the level I see of lot of built rigs doing rather frequently and then thumbing their noses at him for being out there (witnessed it first hand -- dumbasses. Next time I will say something a little less subtle about it. ).

Kevin did well. The crawl ratio and judicous use of lockers helps a immensely and that rig has good clearance underneath. He was hampered by short tires only a few times, really.
Speaking of comfy seats, it is time to upgrade seats and harnesses...I need to do it on the cheap though.

There's a few places where the trail needs to be unstacked, but overall it seemed not bad. Lockers, good driving skills and disregard for sheet metal and it'll be all good. :D

The rocks on the left side of the picture (passenger) form a short vertical wall maybe 24" tall or more that curves. It is maybe the length and a half of a TJ. The wall is barely the width of a tire. The plan was to walk the wall on the passenger side so the rig could climb the boulder on the driver's side when we got to it thus avoiding dragging anything.
I could not see the wall so I asked my passenger Tony to spot me from the passenger seat. I explained to Tony what I wanted to do. He didn't quite believe me, I guess, because as we moved toward the wall I felt I was not on the right line. It took a few explanations and confirmations by him to believe what I wanted to do. Pretty sure he thought I was nuts and was just looking out for our mutual best interests. :D I think Bill even had to do some of the convincing. Tony was in such disbelief he got out to take pictures and spot.
Don looks on. I am not sure if he was convinced either. ;)
