Hi all! Just joined the group, and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is
Dan McFarlane, and I've been living in Peoria for the past 14 years. Bought a
'97 Wrangler 4.0L Sport back when the '97s first started showing up on the
lots. Paid dearly for it, because they were selling so fast. This is my
third 4x4, but my first Jeep. I've been having a great time with it so far.
I just wish I could get out in the dirt more often. I drive it to work every
day, and have a 100 mile round trip. I'm up to about 52,000 miles on it. The
only problems I've had have been the fuel gauge and a crack in the exhaust
manifold. Still dealing with the exhaust leak, but hope to have it fixed this
weekend.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you, and hope to make a run
with you in the near future.
Best regards,
Dan

Yea, I've had the same trouble. Looks like we may have lost 7 messages or so. I thought the problem was with my computer or my internet server, when I couldn't access the site. I guess it was a problem w/ the List Serv.
A run on the 30th sounds great to me. I'm checking on some possible trails. There's one I did above Superior that was fun, though it's probably still a bit warm for that one. It was a 2 all the way with an awesome 4 spot (has a by-pass). It's in the 4WD Trails of Az, Vol 1 book. 4 Peaks via Reno my be an option, I'm still checking it out and will advise what I find out.

As you all have noticed, there was a hickup in the mail server yesterday. Looks like its pretty much back up, although we still don't have all the archives back (all 7 messages). Below is the technical support response to my complaint. If this kind of thing continues we'll have to go to another service.

You have reached FindMail Support.
Due to a machine room expansion project, we are currently experiencing
some network dropouts and some archives appear empty. We expect to have these problems resolved as soon as possible.
Thanks,

The 30th sounds good for me as well. I'm up for something near Phoenix,
in the Superstitions if we can. Tell me where to be, and then tell me 15
minutes before you want me there, so we'll be on time!!
The pics have been reduced in size, but my FTP isn't working right now.
keeps hanging on the first pic, so I'm headed off to sleep. Will try
again later tomorrow to send smaller pics up.

I can do the 30th, too. I live on the West side of town, but I'm up for
anything. On a 1 to 5 scale for off-road driving ability, I'd rate myself at
about a 2 (if I'm by myself). If I'm with a group of more experienced
drivers, though, I think I can keep up. For reference, the Crown King run has
been my most difficult, but it wasn't overwhelming for me.

Subject: Trail Run
Some have expressed interest in heading out next Sunday (8/30). Here are 2 trail suggestions:
Reno Pass - From Sunflower(SR87) to Punkin Center(SR188). Duety's book rates it a 3 (a 2 with some good 3 spots) and the Jeep map rates it a 3+. Should take us up to 5k or so, so it should'nt be too hot...at least at the pass. As an aside, I think (but am not sure) this route hooks up to FR422, which has some 4 spots. This heads south the Four Peaks, but is too long for a day trip...would be good for an overnight, which I'd be up for at some point, if anyone is interested. Anyway, the Reno trip is a good day trip, that should be fun. I believe (though am not certain), that we could air up in Punkin Center. There's also a tavern near by, if memory serves...might be at Jakes Corner, I can't remember...for washing away the trail dust.
Apache Leap - From above (east of) Superior(US60) to below (south of) Superior (SR177). This is a trail I've done before and enjoyed. It's a 2 or a light 3, with a challenging 4 spot (there is a by-pass). This will be a little lower in elevation, so it will probably be warmer than Reno. Some really nice views of Devil's Canyon and the White Canyon Wilderness.
Waddayatink?
Personnally, I'd vote for Reno, but that's because I havn't done it. I'd be up for either.

Reno pass (FR524) wins my vote, if only because it could be a tad cooler. I'll plan to come.
FR422 might be interesting as another trip. This trail runs along the El Oso Divide, so most of it is above 5000 feet, and it should have good views both east and west. This might be a good trail for an overnight trip. 422 is 12 miles one way, and you have to go 18 miles up Four Peaks road to get to it, so the round trip is longer than the CK trip. There is probably good camping around Edward's Peak.

OK. Looks like the votes are for Reno Pass for this coming Sunday.
To get there, take SR 87 north to Bushnell Tanks/Sunflower to the turn off (to the right) between MM 218 and 219. Pull off where the sign points to Bushnell tanks, but last time I was by there, I didn't see the sign. I'm not sure if I missed it, or if it's gone...Anyway, the turnoff's fairly obvious. We'll assemble there to air down, etc.
For those coming from the north-west valley, your best bet may be via Shea Blvd, which starts at the northern end of Squaw Peak Prkwy to points east.
You can tank up at Shea Blvd and SR87.
CB's monitor Channel 4.
Duety indicates the trip to be about 5 hours, not including to and from the trail.
As to starting time, I'd suggest no later than 8 or 9. What's the consensus?
So far, those coming include Doug; Dan/Revolvr; Jim/Yucca; Larry/NoReverse; and Dan McF.
Let us know if anyone else is coming, so we can keep an eye out for ya! If your plans change, and you can't make it, also shoot us a note. Thanks

I have good news and bad news.
The good news is that Chrysler has agreed to give me a new exhaust manifold to
replace the one that cracked (about $450). All I have to do is pay the labor
(about $280). Considering that I have 52,000 miles on my TJ (warranty expired
at 36,000 miles), I think I got a good deal.
The bad news is that the soonest I can get the service done is Monday (8/31),
so I won't be able to make the Reno Pass run. I was hoping to have my Jeep
back on the road by then, but it isn't to be. I hope the rest of you have a
great time, and that everyone stays safe. I'm looking forward to seeing the
pictures and hearing the stories.

Doug
98TJ>>
Here's my report on my Sedona 4 wheeling excursion. I attempted to find FR 55 (Jacks Canyon trail) that starts in Oak Creek (8mi south of Sedona)to upper Schnebly Hill Road. With the help of topo maps and a GPS I was able to determine that this trail was closed at the Oak Creek end. Later I discovered that the trail is open on the North end that lets out on Schnebly at "the" overlook point.
I then attempted to do the Turkey Creek trail by going North West from Oak Creek on FR 216A (Little Park rd) and then turning South West on Turkey Creek trail (which was marked). About 1 mile into the trail, the entrance was again closed off with boulders.
At that time I gave up and just stuck with the old faithful "broken arrow" trail which you pick up by going east on morgan road, about 2 miles before the Sedona "Y". This is a fantastic trail that will realy challenge any vehicle. The Pink Jeep tour jeeps run this trail all the time, so it's easy to find the way. The scenery is second to none. To my knowledge, this is the best 4 wheel drive trail in Sedona.
I topped the trip off by going North on Schnebly Hill Road to the I-17 freeway. For those who have not done Schnebly Hill, its is very scenic and well worth your while, but don't expect to be challenged.
Editorial comments are always welcome.

Subject: hello everyone
Hello group!
I'm your newest newbie. My name is Len Sullivan, and I live in north
Phoenix. I just bought my 1978 J-10 on Sunday, and am still in the process
of playing with all the knobs and switches. It is a shortbed with some
custom bodywork at the rear done by a tree. (Nothing a jack and hammer
can't fix, though) The drivetrain is an '85 Chevy 350, TH350 automatic
trans, NP208 transfer case, Dana 60 3.73 posi rear axle, and a Dana 44 front
axle with the GM style auto hubs. As a whole, the truck is kind of rough,
but it "feels good." It's not nearly as good looking as the pictures of
your vehicles on the Crown King run, but then again, I can use the "sheet
metal brake" without crying. Just break out the sledgehammer!!
This is not only my first Jeep, but my first 4x4 as well. I went for the
Chevy drivetrain because it's something I'm familiar with. Like all project
vehicles, it will evolve over time.....perhaps back to an AMC drivetrain.
At this point I don't know. I figured that $1000 for a truck that runs,
drives, has working 4 wheel drive and a clear title was a good investment.
I'm a single dad, so I may not be able to get to all of the trail runs due
to scheduling difficulties. After I become a little more confident in the
truck, I would like to bring my kids along on some trail runs. Reliability
comes first, though.
I work for CSK Automotive (Checker, Schuck's, and Kragen Auto Parts --
http://www.checkerauto.com ) at the corporate office in Phoenix in the
special order department. Right now I get paid to be a computer geek, but I
worked my way up from the parts counter. If there is anything I can help
y'all find, just let me know. I've been turning wrenches for 15 years as a
hobby, but mostly on Volkswagons and 60's muscle cars.
I look forward to chatting with y'all and running some trails (slowly at
first), but I have to get the truck ship-shape first. This weekend I'll be
doing a major tune up, brake job, trans flush, drain and fill on the
radiator and diffs, engine oil change, new shocks, new tires, and sorting
thru the Chef Boyardee dashboard wiring.
Happy Motoring!

Below is the technical support response to my complaint. If this kind of thing continues we'll have to go to another service.

Revolvr@a...
You have reached FindMail Support.
Due to a machine room expansion project, we are currently experiencing
some network dropouts and some archives appear empty. We expect to have these problems resolved as soon as possible.
Thanks,
The FindMail Team

The 30th sounds good for me as well. I'm up for something near Phoenix,
in the Superstitions if we can. Tell me where to be, and then tell me 15
minutes before you want me there, so we'll be on time!!
The pics have been reduced in size, but my FTP isn't working right now.
keeps hanging on the first pic, so I'm headed off to sleep. Will try
again later tomorrow to send smaller pics up.

trails. There's one I did above Superior that was fun, though it's
probably still a bit warm for that one. It was a 2 all the way with an
awesome 4 spot (has a by-pass). It's in the 4WD Trails of Az, Vol 1 book.
4 Peaks via Reno my be an option, I'm still checking it out and will
advise what I find out.

I'm gonna vote for the 30th and the Reno run, too. Looks like we've been
taking trips from Scott Deuty's book; has anyone tried to find him and
invite him along? according to the book, he own(ed) a Cherokee, so he
qualified for membership...

Thanks
Doug

<<How was your trip to Sedona? Any interesting trails? I've heard there
are some good ones there, though I've never had the chance to explore.
If you found anything of interest, purhaps you could post to the group
for our collective interest, and maybe we could plan a trip.
BTW, about 4 of us (so far) are heading for the Reno Pass trail this
Sunday. From Sunflower to Punkin Center. Jeep map rates it a 3+, and
Duety rates it a 3.
