Ran Willow spings today with. There were three rigs, so it went fairly fast. Thanks for a great day of wheelin Matt O. & Matt H. We were able to make it to the end finally. The boulder field was an absolute blast. Here's the pics I got http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/jeep4offrd/album?.dir=/df40&.src=ph

I assume your speaking of the last real boulder field toward the end. The one that comes between the somewhat easy route there, and the easy sandy route after? Yeah that one's pretty nice:cool:

Depends on what your definition of "the end" is :) That trail goes a long way. We drove so far back that we were in virgin sand. Not a tire track to be found anywhere. Then we drove quite a ways further, almost to the point where it became impassible. Lots of rock gardens :)
Great pics, Lisa! I especially like the ones of us coming up that V-notch :)
Can't wait to see the video...
btw, I like this pic the best...

I took the boss along and she took all the pictures. I layed the jeep on it's side on her side against a wall with her in it. The only part of the jeep that hit the wall was the roll cage in a couple places. The jeep remains pretty. You should have seen the look she gave me. ha ha. After she calmly said. I didn't like that. I started cracking up. Great trail. Deffinitely one of my favorites. Just let me know when you want to run it.

Hey Devilman. Did you hear that. Looks like T.C. is one up on you for next years flop award.
On a serious note. That must have been one hell of a flop to cause 6K worth of damage. What all happened? And are there any pics of the aftermath. I'm also assuming you didn't suffer any injuries, hopefully.

Dang! If I would have known my underside would be photographed, I would have made it look pretty. :D My rig layed over on it's side against a rock but no damage was done. It's actually sitting on the rocker bar and I was able to just drive forward to bring it back down. I think Bruce just put me there to get a good pic. :D This trail is a blast and I had a lot of fun. We were hoping to hike to the lake but ran into some tall reeds and couldn't go any further. We could hear boats though so we were close.

There is a long narrow rock garden at the very end of the trail with alot of smaller (2 to 3 foot and smaller) boulders packed in together. It's only about 1/8 mile or less from the lake. Couple weekends ago when we ran that trail, we went to that garden and turned around cause it would have added at least another hour to the day and it was already getting late, plus we already had an interesting enough day. We did hike up through the garden and into the sandy area ahead of it for a little ways.

From your description, the rock garden is the same one everyone refers to as "rock garden" on this trail. We drove through and we kept driving at least another 1/4-1/2 mile before hiking another 1/2 mile or so to the lake. Next time you run it, let me know and I'll come along (or vice-versa) :)
The point where the trail becomes undriveable (very large waterfalls that even buggies would be hard pressed to climb and house sized boulders) is (curently) much more than 1/8 from the lake. We hiked at least 1/2 mile, maybe more down to where the reeds were and there was no hiking any further, nor did we ever see water. Maybe the lake level has dropped so the end of the trail isn't as close to the lake as it was. Next time out I'll bring my GPS and get some waypoints.

Brian (was there in his ZJ with his dad, John, in his Mog) mentioned they were planning on running it again on 1/14...
I'm not sure when I can get back out again (I really need to get those motormounts installed) but if you name a date/time I'll see what I can do :)

I mapped the route on my GPS so I might be able to get a reading from where I stopped at the garden. I'd say the water level must have definately dropped because we hiked way past the last driveable part and never hit water.

Post up a map overlay. You can use OziExplorer if you don't have something already.

Here's the coordinates from the rock garden:
N 33° 32' 32.9"
W 111° 30' 17.6"
Don't have a mapping program and I'll be out of town the next few days so I'll defer the mapping to you. :D

Here are three images showing the well known Rock Garden, then some of the other landmarks between there and the lake. In these satellite images it appears the lake is about the same level as it is now (ie the reeds seem to be in the same area). According to the map legend/distance marker, it's about a mile (in trail distance) from where we parked (a bit beyond the Lunch Spot) to the water. There is no way anyone could drive within 1/8 mile of the waters edge at the level it is now :D
The images are loaded north to south as the trail runs and overlap each other a bit.
Sorry, but to get them uploaded I had to reduce resolution. The text is as follows (from bottom of photos upward)
1st image - Impassible Waterfall / Narrow Canyon, Flat Rock, Reeds
2nd image - Lunch Spot, Big Crack, Impassible Waterfall / Narrow Canyon
3rd image - Rock Garden, Lunch Spot

Actually, those just came from maps.google.com which I'm sure use the same GIS data/maps, but they're just 2D, flat satellite images.
