I have an 04 Rubicon with a 6" Fabtech Long Arm kit on it. I have recently developed a leak that seems to be coming from my transfer case. There is oil that is dripping off of the yoke coming out of the transfer case. Its not a huge leak, but it is enough to leave a mess on my driveway.

I tried to get this fixed as a warranty issue at Scottsdale Power Jeep where I bought the Rubicon, but they refuse to fix it because I have modified my rear drive shaft  . I have no problem with this, except for the fact that this is a known issue with a technical service bulleting out on it. The only problem is that the TSB (#21-003-04) has an end date of March 1, 2004 and my build date was March 10, 2004.

So I need to find a lift friendly service department to take it to so that I can get this fixed under warranty as it should be.

Any suggestions??

Ryan

I had a really good guy at Darner which is close to you but I tried getting a hold of him a few weeks ago and he was no longer employed there. One thing I like about that place is the guy that worked on my Heep last time (my A/C) was a fellow Jeeper and had a rock crawlin' TJ. We were talking shop in the parking lot (he isn't a member of our club). Anyway, this new advisor was quite the arse when I spoke to him so I decided to not bring the Heep in (I was going to have them extract a broken bolt). I've since also ordered parts from Darner last week (misc parts I need for my 8.8 swap) and the parts people were about the most unfriendly of any I've dealt with and the cashier took 4 times to work the credit card machine which didn't inspire much confidence....

I too would be interested in suggestions of good service writers. I posted a message a month or so back here but didn't get a response as to who others are using that were good....there's got to be some good ones out there?

I think we have all given up on the taking our stuff into the dealers, there just don't seem to be any good service people out there anymore.

Ryan,

I know everyone here hates Earnhardt's, BUT there is ONE guy, and only ONE guy that will take care of it if it is at all possible. Mark Underwood. Call him and talk to him, he is a service advisor at the Earnhardt's on Baseline and Rural. He has fixed many items on my Jeep without questions because he is a fellow Jeeper.

Good luck w/ the warranty, the factory balancer removed and aftermarket yoke. I would think they're going to be real fun!!! my .02 :D Probably easier to change the seal yourself or have it done!

Not 100% sure if he still works there or not, but if he does, go see him.

If they won't do it Ryan, it would be cheaper to do it yourself like Cole said...

Update: Mark does still work at Earnhardts. I have a call in to him so hopefully he will call me back.

Next step is do buy the parts and either take it somewhere or fix it myself.

Anybody have any recomendations? Performance Offraod? 4 Wheeler Supply? Etc.?

The leak seems to have gotten worse since it was in the dealership so I would like to get this fixed ASAP.

Since you work down at ASU, take it to 4 Wheelers and most likely they can fix it for you while you wait. They should have the parts there too, but call Simon and make the appointment.

Glad to hear Mark is still at Earnhardts though...call him again and bug him!!

Nothing yet. Mark never called me back. I am going to see if I can get a hold of him tomorrow. I honestly dont expect anyone to warranty it since I have an aftermarket drive shaft, but its still worth a try. If not, I will be talking to a local shop. I'll keep you updated.

Ryan

P.S. Good to see your rig out and about on the trail. :D

You never know Ryan...he changed my pinion seal after I put in a lockright in the front...also changed the sending unit in the gas tank after a wheeling trip and a nice little dent in the gas tank.

Let's go wheeling!!! :D

Im ready when you are. Let me know next time you are going out and I will see if I can make the trip.

As for an update on this issue, I talked to Mark and he seems like a good guy. He said he would take a look at it, but he's would need to keep it for a minimum of 3 days before he could get it. Im tired of dealing with this, so I took a look at it myself and put some rtv sealant on the nut inside of the yoke where it is leaking from. It has temporarily fixed the leak, but I fully expect it back.

In the mean time, I have ordered a new retainer from Dodge Earnharts parts and am planning on putting that in. From the research that I have done, there is supposed to be a groove at the 6 o'clock position to return oil to the transfer case. I have heard that this is not there, so pressure builds up pushes the oil out. Hopefully this will fix the problem.

I am a heavy equipment mechanic. You almost did the right thing with the rtv. What you need to do is pull the nut and put the rtv on the splines reinstall the nut. This is how we do it. The seal only seals the outer diameter of the yoke. Thus oil will still leak out the splines unless you rtv it.

Thanks alot for the info. Once it starts leaking again, I will give that a try.

Thanks again,

Ryan
