View Full Version : Any interest in a "Full Moon Run" on Jan 14th

As the title states, it's gonna be a full moon on Jan 14th and I've never done a night run during a full moon and it should be pretty cool (literally and figuratively) provided the weather holds out and the clouds stay away.

Right now I'm off on the 14th but the new bid for work doesn't come out for about a week or so. Even if I end up that I can't make it (becausde I need to work on the 15th), if there is a lot of interest y'all could have a lot of fun w/o me.

I'm thinking TM, White Tanks, maybe FJ. I'm open for ideas and I'd like to see a lot of interest as it is a Saturday night. :D

Full moon runs are fun! I like to do the scenic ones at night--is there anything on the easy to moderate scale at TM? Broken Arrow is awesome on the full moon, but cold in January--maybe we save that one for May!

I led a full moon Jeep run over Bulldog Canyon in the east valley about 3 months ago and it was neat! Several people remarked at how totally different the trail is at night. Bulldog Canyon has a few challenges and creeping along could last you a couple of hours with stops. It's probably the closest trail in the east valley and is easily accessible from the 60 or the 202. You DO need a (free) permit from the Forest Service office in Mesa. The gate is locked on all sides.

I bought a light stick for my Jeep since I was up front. You'd never lose me with that thing on!

Full moon runs are fun but there is no chance that this cold blooded arizonianinian is going to do it in January.

A run through Box Canyon from Price Rd. (south end) and up to the cabins and back would be a nice leisurely night run and the full moon would be great from inside the Box...unless you all want to do some rock crawlin'.;)

May be game for FJ.... provided it's some difficult stuff that can be done with big tires but no lockers.... :D

I'm still in. U.S. Naval Observatory says the moon rises at 6:03 pm that night and sets at 8:41 am on the 15th (which will make it good for early evening)...so since the sun is supposed to set that night at around 6:00...we could get started and meet up at like 7:30-8:00. ???

01-09-2006, 12:06 PM
Sounds like you got some good info there..
What do you feel like runnin.
something easy or hard?
Is Wind_Dancer still in on this.
If your thinkin of going post up so we can get a good idea of what people want to run?

Wind_Danzer
01-09-2006, 12:08 PM
Hey, still interested!!!!!! I've got off on the 15th too so it would be cool to do!!!

So FJ is the area or is that still in the air?

Offroader5
01-09-2006, 05:27 PM
I'm all for the FJ area and I don't have a preference on any easy or hard trail. I've done Upper Ajax at night, and it's definitely interesting in the dark. Never done Upper Woodpecker at night either. An easier run through box and to the cabins and back would be a nice laid back trip, which I wouldn't mind doing. Especially since I will have some fresh welds on the suspension, and would rather not test them out on a 4+ trail at night;)

I may be able to get a buddy with an FJ40 to tag. I'll ask him tomorrow.

flxy_tj
01-09-2006, 05:28 PM
I would like to run FJ I have a ton of things to get done this weekend on the house and it is like 15 to 20 mins from the house :D
Think you pull off woodpecker?
I know my buddy an it on like 32's or something.

flxy_tj
01-09-2006, 05:30 PM
Yeah this will be toys first time out also maybe we should keep it simple.... Then if we feel like messin around on some trails we could do that also.:D

Wind_Danzer
01-09-2006, 05:32 PM
Need to figure out a start time as I'll be coming from the northwest and I know traffic on the 60 going east can be a PITA in the evening (though it is a Saturday night isn't it :D).

I also want to post on the old site but need to know what trails are of interest and minimum vehicle requirements. I think trails that don't keep us in the canyons would be cool to do under the moonlight but a cabin run might be neat too. I have 3.5" lift, 1" BL and 35's with an 8.8/D30 combo. 3.73 gears and a limited slip in the back. I've done Upper Woodpecker and Upper Ajax on this setup.

flxy_tj
01-09-2006, 05:38 PM
ok how ever you would like to do it I'm fine with that I figure start around 730 or 800.
I sure would like to run woodpecker but if we get people that would like to keep it easy scenic I'm down for that also.:D
I just need to get out.

01-09-2006, 05:45 PM
How does arrive to the dirt lot by 7pm sound and roll out by 7:30pm?

Requirements:

Stock Rubi or regular TJ on 31's with at least limited slip?

Offroader5
01-09-2006, 06:33 PM
Yeah, I'm down for Upper Woodpecker, it's a good trail for playing and still has bypasses in case of problems...plus it's not too far back in there. I'm sure my buddy would be too since we've talked about running it at night.

Cottonwood Canyon Rd. @ 7pm sounds good to me.

Everybody have rocklights?

Can't make the night run, but if you guys want some scenery and are in the Box Canyon/Martinez area...throw in Jackhandle. Is a short loop that starts down in a wash then climbs up to the top of one of the high ridges. Views will be excellent. JH starts just a short drive from the "end" of box canyon (the intersection with the optional hill climbs), headed towards Martinez.

Can be run with your 31" + lim slip minimum requirements...provided you skip the optional "Jackass Bypass", which is kind of a biatchy little section. Basically, when you're in the wash, and have the option of entering a tight squeeze (not the little ledge/squeeze near the start of the trail) or taking a steep climb up the hill to the right (main trail)...take the climb.

Have fun!
Tom

So are we still running Upper Woodpecker? Depending on how many rigs end up showing, it could take 2 to 3 hours to run depending on what happens and how much we want to play. I don't know how late everyone wants to be out there, but if we are rolling at 7:30, it'll be almost 8:00 when we start Woodpecker. That puts us at around 10:00-11:00 when we exit the trail. If we want to head back to the cabins at that point, it's about another 30 to 45 minutes back to the cabins...so think about how long you want to be out there and we can always decide when we're there.

I say we run Upper Woodpecker and then just head out through Box Canyon to the South, and come out Price Rd. back to Hwy.79. If all goes without incident, that should put us back at the hwy. around 11:00-12:00.

I wouldn't worry tooooo awfully much about having lockers or even a LS. Of course this depends on your rig. I run alot of trails in the area including Woodpecker open at both diffs, (only thing that has kept the crappy D30/D35 combo from grenading), but I also have alot of flex so I can keep my tires planted. If your rig is more stiff in the suspension, you may be better off with some sort of "traction aid".

Well I'll be coming back out through cotton wood canyon because my rig is not street legal to drive from the exit of box canyon back to the meeting place plus full hydro steering gets real weird going fast  ...... Will anyone else be trailering their rigs out there?

I may join this run and If I do.. I'll hang with you back to the starting point. No real time issues for me. Just have to talk my wife into braving the cold this evening since I don't feel like putting the top/door back on.

Also... I did some figuring (god I am a geek) and a 'true' full moon only occurs on a weekend four times every year. Of course I fudged the numbers a little because 30 days for a lunar cycle is much easier to calc than the actuall 29.532421.

I have to go now and put more tape on my glasses.

Can a stock Rubi take this run? If so, where do we meet and what time?

Rubi can make it.

You can meet at my house and follow me up. I'm on the way. It might also be a good thing for me as I have been breaking so many things on my ride lately that It will be good for someone else to know how to 'drag my stuff home'.:D

I'll also PM you the directions right now.

For you Westsiders heading out there...

US60 from about Mesa Dr. to Higley (LONG stretch) it is bumper to bumper. They only have ONE lane open eastbound, and it is going SLOW....

Oh ya, really bad right now. I got a few 3 miles down the freeway before it started slowing down, got off at Val Vista and cruised Baseline down. BUT at 6:30 AM, there is no traffic on baseline.

Might want to think of the 202...take 17 south to 10 (just after McDowell), then hit the 202 East (Red Mountain Freeway) until it ends, I think Higley, then head South, and take Broadway or Apache Trail to at least Power. I think that is when it opens back up to all 3 lanes.
