I biffed one of my wheel studs up and need to replace it. I am impatient and don't want to wait until tomorrow and get the OEM part and today I have called most of the Napa, PepBoys and like. No one carries the direct replacement and I was curious if anyone knows if the wheel studs are the same. Napa has the rear axle stud I need for a '98, and I drive a '02. Before I go and pull the stud to measure I was curious if anyone knows. Thanks in advance. Oh yeah, and happy New Year.... May you all wheel as much as you want and have a safe and prosperous year.

Try a Autozone or Checker... I just replaced about 5 of them less then a month ago. I got mine from Autozone for like $1.99 a piece. The Autozone by me had tons in stock...

X2 on Checker. Although, Turtle must have bought them all up as at the time I could only find one at each store within reasonable driving distance. :D

OK so I have been to and called about 15 auto part stores and not one has the stupid stud. I pulled my shaft and then the stud and it is not the typical stud with the shoulder that you have to pull through the axle plate. The stud simply threads into it. I am asking for help anyone have any ideas?

If it threads in it sounds like ACE hardware might be a good place to look next.

Travis,
I'm heading up your way tomorow afternoon to meet up with Brian, then get my gears done at Grady's... I'd be happy to pick some up on my side of town and meet up with you on the way. I live in Gilbert if you'd like to call around a few places (or even the dealers).
Napa on Gilbert Rd/guadulupe had some for the 8.8 as I bought some there on Friday...but that of course doesn't help you....but perhaps they stock yours.

I am impatient. I want to wheel tomorrow and not have to sit shotgun with anyone. I am sitting here looking at Nick's Jeep.... Maybe????

Just take his whole axle shaft.... this way you'll have a spare and 4 additional lugs.

So you're saying they don't press in huh.... weird. I can't say I have heard of that, all I've heard is they all press on.
Have you checked out the D35 shafts sitting with Rachel's axle in the back. Maybe they would interchange with the 44 you have now.... Though I thought they pressed in.

I don't know about factory shafts but my Alloy USA D44 shafts used thread in studs.

Weird. My Alloy USA shaft studs pressed in. Why can't these companies keep anything alike? Suppose you were in Moab and needed some studs? The press in variety are available almost anywhere. I say drill out the holes and replace with press in studs and be done with it. ;)

Well it is done, I have the Rock Jock mounted. Don't I wish. Stu, I have the same type and no one in town (open today) had them. I fixed the old one well enough to be able to wheel tomorrow and then I will spend some time and get the right type of studs. Thank you all for your help and suggestions!!!! It was a long day but at least I caan try to break again tomorrow.

Are your shafts drilled for both bolt patterns?

I don't believe they were. I used Troy's ball joint press to install the studs.

The single pattern flanges (which it sounds like you have) use press in studs. The dual pattern flanges use screw-in studs. (Don't ask me why, but that is how it is done.)
Where did you get the shafts from?

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I was on the trail yesterday all day.
They are drilled for both bolt patterns. They are the suprerior 33 spline D44 axles.

Good information to have, I guess I need to order a few and keep spares.
Thanks

LKD TJ,
I asked Ron at Alloy USA about the screw in studs. They are Grade 8. He said that it is not too likely that they will cross thread before the lug nut does, but if it should happen, a replacement can be obtained from him. He said that hot rod shops typically have 1/2" screw in studs but that they are usually too long for our application. (myself....I would be willing to cut one off, if I had to, to salvage a wheelin' trip, etc.)

They were chromoly. I first bought Superiors and found out they were just stock replacements. I returned them and bought the Alloy USA. I think I still have the receipt. Griswold bought a set not long after I did. I don't think his were dual pattern either. I just don't understand why Ron would put an axle shaft out there with non standard studs.
Stu Olson

A recent e-mail exchange says that standard replacements shafts use press in studs.
Chromoly shafts have dual drilled patterns and use screw in studs.
A batch of standard replacement shafts were accidently made from chromoly and were sold just last month (probably seen some threads on some cheap axles), while supplies lasted.
How long ago did you get them? Maybe the configuration has changed since you got yours....and so the above is not necessarily applicable to you. Or you were sold regular shafts and told they were chromoly when they weren't. Dont' really know.
