ok...seems like a stupid question...

My TJ steering wheel wont lock in the upright postion, but if its turned upside down it will lock easily..??

Anyone else's like this..?? Just curious...

Perhaps you have the Australian model?

Maybe some of the engagement teeth are broken.

it feels perfectly normal when it clicks and engages...strange indeed...

The owners manual for my 97 states that this is the way the lock is designed.

Why upside down? Who knows what the engineers were thinking. (or if they were)

I dont remember seeing it in the OM...but then I didnt look for it specifically either...musta been the same designers that did the ac/heat knob design...

Im still trying to figure out why the A/C has to be on to get the heat in recirc mode (or why there are only 2 -"floor" or "vent" settings for heat)....guess maybe I should just pull the hardtop and proclaim my Jeepness..

Part of the reason the A/C is on in the recirc mode is so the thing circulates the freon and oils so the O rings and stuff doesn't dry out in the winter from not being used. Probably a bigger problem back east than here where we use the A/C pretty much year round, if you have it of course. ;)

Are you lifted? who did it?

the only reason I can think of for the upside down locking is when it was lifted and they adjusted the steering wheel they over did it. other than that Im stumped....

Page 9 of the 97 manual "With the engine running, turn steering wheel upside down, turn off engine and remove key. Turn the steering wheel slightly in either direction until the lock engages."

It also says that the wheel will lock in any postion if the wheel is turned 1/2 turn in either direction without the key in it. Mine does the same as yours, it only locks upside down, and my jeep is bone stock as far as lift and tires.

Not much of an issue here but my bet is it is designed to lock in a good position for parking on a hill with a curb. Such that if it starts to roll the front tire stops the vehicle.

Mine does the same.

Yeah...Im lifted...I did the lift and I was only off a hair to the right and it didnt take much adjustment to get it back...others seem to be the same way..so I think its factory...

All good...just wierd...

I haven't rolled it on it's lid yet so I can't help.
Perhaps upside down Jeeps are more prone to theft?? :D
