I have a question: Is there a difference between a dodge 360 and jeep 360. I thought that there are all the same:confused:
Thanks

Its the same cheese, just with a different wrapper LOL
Now between all the years the 360 was made, YES there are some differances... but basicly the same.

Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep, Eagle,

Your talking about a Mopar 360 Period! ;)

Whatcha Plannin?

This is absolutely not true, the Dodge 360 and the AMC 360 are by different companies and share no common parts. The 360 by AMC was in many Jeeps over the years. In particular the Full Size Jeeps such as the full size Cherokee, Wagoneer and J-Series Trucks from 1972-1986, and shared a block with the AMC 401.

I have owned and rebuilt a few of the AMC 360's.

I have no knowledge of the V-8's that were put into Grand Cherokee's, but I believe they are Mopar.

If I remember correctly, there are 2 different flavors (different blocks) of MOPAR 360's also.

As I said, Through the years YES! there is a differance.
A "79" 360 will be quite a bit different than a "03"

AMC is, well AMC all on its own and not considered a "Jeep" engine
(in my book anyway)...

The title would go something like this.
I have a "78" Jeep CJ With a AMC 360 motor....

For example:
The "99" Grand Cherokee with the 5.9 and the "99" Dodge ram 5.9 are the same.

The question was not specific enough I guess

Since AMC engines were in Jeeps since the 1965 AMC 327 V-8 and AMC 232 sixes to the last AMC 360 V-8 last used in the (1994 I think it was )Wagooner. A span of 29 years just in AMC V-8's in Jeeps. Let us not forget the 6 bangers that have been AMC since 1965 that include the legendary 4.0 liter in my 2000 Cherokee sport that last I looked were still in Wranglers. Thats 40 years of six banger AMC motors in Jeeps.

Mopar started putting 360 V-8's in Jeeps in 1992 and 1998 was the last year they did. So Mopar 360's in Jeeps lasted 6 years.

I guess the bottom line is what 360 do you have that you are doing what with. Is this a repair, transplant, modification?

What is the plan?

A 99 grand does not come with a 360 (5.9) it came with a 287 (4.7) V-8.

Try the Advanced Adaptors site at http://www.advanceadapters.com/jeep.html

I didn't see anything for a Dodge 360 to any Jeep tranny of 1986. There are many adaptors to Chevy. Give them a call.

What transmission do you have and what was the original engine?

If you have the original transmission in automatic should be the Chrysler 904 3 Speed for the 4 cylinder or the Chrysler 999 3 speed with the 6 cylinder engine. If it is a manual should be the standard Warner T4 4 speed or Warner T5 5 speed. The tremec T176 was standard on some models with the 6 cylinder.

If your original engine was an AMC 258, 304, 4.2, or 4.0 your transmisson should bolt right up to an AMC 360 or 401 if you can find one.

The strentgh of the T4 and T5 are considered marginal for V-8 converstion as per Advanced Adaptors. The T176 is a good tansmission to keep with a V-8 conversion. The 904 auto is also not considered strong enough for a V-8. The 999 auto is very capable of handling a V-8. In other words be aware a V-8 swap may mean a transmission swap too.

Depending on what you plan to do with the CJ if it was mine I would or would not go with an AMC 360 or 401. With the oil pump in the front of the pan regular hill climbing/dune racing is not tolerated well in the AMC V-8's. Ask me how I know. There is a fix for this if it is and issue, I went with a SBC instead. There are also adaptors for Fords, and Buick's.

It was a 360 out of a 78 Dodge ramcharger. The guy has sold it now, so I will look for something else. Thanks for everyone's help.

Good luck and keep us posted as to your plan. I am currently changing over to an automatic as I can no longer operate a clutch. That is the plan anyway, might take a while. My biggest advice is don't under do it. Determine what the most extreme thing you will do with it and build for that. I is a real PITA and wallet to build it up almost enough and then break something. Ask me how I know.
