AAAAAGH, my eyes!!
Another reason why I stand well clear of anyone winching or even using a tug strap.

D*mn, that's messed up. Synthetic winch rope is sure the way to go.
Reminds me of a story I read from Michigan about a man being killed in his Jeep from a broken rope with a metal tow hook on it that went thru the windshield.

I have always had 3 questions about synthetic rope.
How does it hold up to the jagged rock in these parts?
Does it pick up cholla needles and every other God-forsaken-thing-with-a-thorn that seems to call AZ home?
How do they hold up to the rather intense sunlight? I thought they were a little light sensitive.
Don't they have a rather short life span? OK , that is 4 things......

cant let it hit the rocks...you need to use a sleeve on the rope to stop it from abrading
yes it rope it will pick up prickers
use a winch cover to protect the winch rope
if taken care of properly it will last many years

You should use a rock guard, cheap and effective.
Most likely.
Varies, I use a 'shielded' rope that has an outer covering for heat, rocks and UV protection.
Again, it varies on the rope used and its exposure to heat, rocks and UV. HOWEVER whe a cable snaps and grabs your leg, like the pics, the scar will last a lifetime.
http://www.masterpull.com/ I use the Super rope.

We were wheeling out behind the dam of Lake Dallas several years ago. Mostly mudding, but my brother-in-law was in to that. Some of the rigs, of which most were larger than our Jeeps, Chevy Blazers 'n such would get stuck to the floor boards. In fact it was the week between Christmas and New Years.
One of the guys got stuck and one of the big trucks was working on pulling him out. There were 3 folks in the cab of the truck, his girlfriend and his buddy next to the door. They were using a strap and very little progress was made. He then decided that he needed a longer strap and a running start. He hooked two straps together and hooked on to the guys K Mart trailer knob since it wasn't under the mud. He then hooked on to his front tow hooks and backed up at a quick pace. Knob broke and was launched at his truck. It passed over the hood, thru the windshield and caught his girlfriend tween the eyes, crushing her skull and embedding in her brain.
She was pronounced Dead on the scene, cab of his truck had blood splattered all over.
That brought an end to mudding in the bottoms behind the dam. My brother-in-law did very little wheeling after that, but kept his truck.
