In January, the Governor will appoint a new member to the AG&FC. They serve for 5 years and it is a volunteer position.

A candidate that seems to stand out is Lois Drinkwater Thompson. She is a hunter and comes from a hunting family. She is a retired schoolteacher from Scottsdale and competed in the 1968 Olympics. There are 5 other candidates to pick from.

The G&FC receives no money from the states General Fun. Instead license and tag fees along with matching federal funds provide over 70% of the total budget. That said: It should be a given that every resident of the state of AZ purchase a hunting or fishing license, whether or not you intend to use it. Just consider it a donation to keeping our lands well managed. If nothing, else consider it a ?land-use pass?.

What can you do?
1) Purchase a $25 hunting or fishing license, do so EVERY year.
2) Contact the governors? office supporting your choice of candidate for the G&FC. You may write and send a letter or send an e mail from http://www.governor.state.az.us/global/contact.htm

Letter:

The Honorable Janet Napolitano
Governor of Arizona
1700 West Washington
Phoenix, Arizona 85007

Honorable Janet Napolitano
I request you support _____________________ as a commissioner on the board of the Arizona Game & Fish Commission.

I feel that their service to our community and state over the years has made a positive impact. I also believe they have the background and understanding required to serve on the board and provide the leadership vital for hunters, fishermen and off-highway vehicle operation sports. The rules, regulations, and management of our scarce resources must be managed for today?s enthusiast and conserved for tomorrow?s sports men and women.

Thank you for your support of _________________________ my choice for Arizona Game & Fish Commissioner.

Sincerely,

Joesheet D. Ragman

Don,

Very good points. However, and I am not sure on this as I never did go back to verify it, but was told that the permission to be on STL granted by the hunting/fishing license was only valid if you are indeed hunting or fishing. If you are just out running trails it does not cover it. Just food for thought. To me it would be worth it if everyone had both just to be safe and let them know how the lands are being used.

Dunno, but that wasn't the topic. Anyhow it was a quote from the newpaper. I do know that in Texas a G&F license doesn't grant you any land access unless hunt or fishing, I didn't assume anything, so when I saw the quote I just went with it. There was not any mention of anything else. The entire sentence: "If your're only interested in wildlife management, consider it a 'land-use pass'". I think the point they were making was it really our duty as citizens to support our G&F and if we don't hunt or fish, then we still have an obligation to do so. Its only $25 bucks.

Additionaly we need to get involved with who is to be appointed to the comission. I provided a pre-drafted letter and the website location to send it or other comments in this critical appointment.

Of course I guess all of this has been posted before but I just missed it.

As far as I understand it, a H/F license is only good for hunting and fishing and can only be used for access to STL for hunting and fishing. BUT, I agree, we should all get one to support efforts by AZFG or is it AZGF.........Your hunting dollar (licensening) does a lot of good in the state to keep our wildlife regulated.

Read up on all the candidates at http://www.arizonawildlifecouncil.org/ .
Personally, my vote would go with Art Pearce hands down over any of them.

Ken

p.s. Hint: Rabbits are mostly in season year round...buy a hunting license and carry a legal taking device. Enjoy the trails.

I buy my H&F license with the boat registration every year. $44 for combined use. Consider it a donation mostly.
