I have a ticking noise in my 4.2L. I pu a stethascope to the pan, valve cover and there is no excessive noise. When I put it on the timing chain cover by the cam gear it is really loud. I was wondering if anybody has delt with this. Not sure if I need a lifter/cam kit or timing chain.
Any input would be great,
Rusty

Welcome to the noisey Jeep valve train. The timing chain may be loose/stretched. I'd drive it for a while and see if it gets any worse. If it's a higher mileage 4.2; go to a thicker oil. Yeah; these are just bandaids, but the Jeep six will run along time making noises and seeping through rear main seals. I run 20W50 in my high mileage 4.2.
