Hey everyone, I'm looking to do some wheelin on January 2. I want to try to get up to willow springs in AJ. I was on the BBQ run a few weeks back, but my oil pressure guage failed just as we got on the highway (I was in the red cj7). I'll take a guage failure any day!!! Anyway, so i missed the trail, but fixed the jeep and got in some Mini Moab, which was pretty good. I don't know the trail, so I would be looking for someone else to lead it, but I have no problem getting everyone lost:) . Give me some feedback and then I'll post the trip here and on the old site. Don't forget permits.

Hey, now I'm thinking I might try to run it on saturday, Dec 31. I can do it either day. What do you all think?

CHANGE OF PLANS!!!!

Instead of willow springs, plans now are for a day in florance. Come in the back way to the coke ovens (by crossing the river) then move on to Martinez Mine and Mill, then run up to Ajax mine. We'll either head out through box canyon or end up in superior. Sign up at the old site. The date will be Jan. 2 for sure. Meet at Mcdonalds in florance at 7am.

That's definitely going to be a DAY in the area. It'll take you probably half the day just to get across the river to the ovens and back down into Martinez Canyon (if the river's crossable... check the flow rates, and depending on how long you hang out at the Ovens). Are you planning on the whole Martinez loop trail or just heading up the the mill and turn around?

If your going to head up to Ajax, you'd might as well head out through the Perlite mines East of Picket Post mntn. rather than turn back around and go out through the Box.

Hey John,
who knows what will happen. Sounds like you should be our leader. I don't know the Perlite Mines, unless that is the trial that goes east of the Ajax mine into superior. I Just want to get out and do some wheelin.

The trail that comes out near the Perlite mines is I think FR-989 which does meet up with HWY.60 East of Superior and is an offshoot from Telegraph Canyon Rd. Telegraph is the trail that turns into the Ajax Mine trail further South.

Myself and at least one other (maybe two), are thinking of doing some "research" wheeling in this area on the same day. We're going to try and get through to Martinez Canyon from the Ajax trail which is North of Martinez. As far as we know, there is no trail that will take you North from deep inside Martinez Canyon (past the Mill near the switchbacks) to Ajax. Usually it's only a loop trail and you have to come out the same way you came it near the cabins. Looking at satellite pics and topo's, there is a wash that runs between the two trails and also looks as though there may be some sort of trail (all be it an old one) cut in through the desert.

Don't know how built your rig is or if you'd be interested in taggin' along. At this point we don't know how rough the trail could get in the "unknown" area...we're used to doing some of the more hard trails though. We wouldn't be going by the Ovens, or Box Canyon however...and we may not even see the Martinez area unless all goes well and the trail does go through, so if you were dead set on seeing those areas...then nevermind :) Just a suggestion if your interested.

Thanks for the invite. Can I take you up on it agian some time? I have yet to run up Martinez Canyon and am looking forward to it. Been to the Ovens a few times and up Telegraph Canyon Rd (would have ralther been in the wash past Ajax though). So now's my chance to hit these other tails. We'll be on ch. 4 thought so keep an ear out for us.
Joshua.
